one rank higher than the average enlistment. It is the highest award in Girl Scouts and one of the most prestigious awards in the world for girls. The girls have to identify a problem in the community, come up with ideas to work towards a solution, and implement their plans in the community. Ann had five girls in a three-year period earn the Gold Award. “It’s a lot of work and a huge process, but it is worth it.” The girls from Ann’s troop are in all areas of the work force. There are teachers, nurses, doctors, and even an aeronautical engineer. One young lady from her troop is currently the assistant principal of Florence High School. “I see the girls from my troop all over town and they still come up to me to tell me how much fun they had in Girl Scouts,” Ann added. One of the girls from her troop even became a troop leader herself. She told Ann one day that even though she couldn’t remember all the specifics of everything they did, she always remembered having fun. Whenever there was a need in Girl Scouts, Ann tried to fill it. At one point she was the leader of three different troops at one time. “Saying, ‘I don’t have time’ is not an excuse. We all have 24 hours in a day,” explained Ann. Serving the Girl Scouts was so important to Ann that when she went to work as office manager for Ringer Law Firm, she told them she had to have Thursday afternoons off for her troop. “I told them I would give them 40 hours a week, and I always did, but I had to leave at 2:30 every Thursday to meet with the troop. That would have been a deal breaker.” Ann insists that her life was enriched from her time with the Girls Scouts. “I went on so many trips that I never would have gone on if I was just sitting at home. Port Gibson, Natchez, the Gulf Coast, and the Old and New Capitols were all trips we made with the troop. We even went to Savannah, Georgia, the birthplace of the Girl Scouts. We always had lots of fun and I tried to always be a positive influence on the girls. Once, in a restaurant with an older group of girls, we were laughing so hard we were crying and I looked around and pointed out to the girls that we had all this fun without one drop of alcohol.” One of their favorite places to go, however, was right here in Rankin County. Camp Wahi sits on 156 acres of hardwood forest in Brandon. They went twice a year —once just their own troop and once with other troops in their service area. Although Ann recently retired her position as service unit chair, she still serves as an advisor. “It’s time for me to pass the baton. We’ve got some great folks in West Rankin Girl Scouts and they’ve got all kinds of neat things going on,” says Ann. “I’ll still be there, but I’ll be in the background just having fun. I went to Camp Wahi this year and got to do all the fun stuff without any of the planning or responsibility. It was pretty nice.” After 42 years of service and leadership to the Girl Scouts of West Rankin County, Ann has certainly earned the right to just have fun with the girls. l Hometown Rankin • 53
