Crusaders country
There was about 4min to go and I
got on the field and I put the ball in
the wrong side of the scrum. I had a
mind-blank. I was very nervous on
debut, we had just sung the anthem,
something I had never done before. It
was emotional and then I just put the
ball in the wrong side of the scrum.
It was something I had never done
before but just happened to do it when
I was on debut. We were winning by a
few points and I think my teammates
didn’t want to be mean to me so they
didn’t tease me. It’s never happened
again and it never will.
Do you have a strict nutrition and
training regime?
We tend to all want to eat healthy
when you are doing training and
playing, as you tend to perform
better. There are some of us who are
pretty good with that and others have
nutrition guidelines in terms of what
they are eating.
A majority of the team has no
strict rules, it’s just everything in
moderation. During the season, we do
something every day, some days are
for recovery. You have to train before
work and get up early around 5.30
then go to work, then train at night
and get home around 8-8.30. It’s very
busy but I love it.
How do you feel about the pay
you get? Do you think it is fair you
have to work full-time when the
equivalent men’s players don’t have
to?
I don’t think it is unfair. We are
making progress, we on contract now
and that’s a start. We can only move
forward from that now. Until we get
more exposure from the media, more
bums on seats at games, and more
sponsors and all that kind of stuff,
then we can move forward from there.
But at the moment, that’s not the case
and there will be more money there in
the future.
A lot has changed since I got into
the Black Ferns team in 2007, so that’s
been great and I am grateful from
where we have come from and where
we are going to. The older girls who
played back in the day have paved the
way for us.
Looking forward to the future,
what are your plans?
It has motivated me to work harder.
When you get awards like that, it
means you need to train harder. I am
on 47 caps for the Black Ferns and I
want to get to 50. I want to get there
this year, so that’s motivating me to
train hard and keep on top of my
game. The only other person to get 50
caps is the captain Fiao’o Fa’amausili,
who is now retired. She’s the only one.
If that was to happen, I would be the
second woman.
I’m going to keep going until my
body tells me not to. I want to make
the team this year, get 50 caps, then
decide whether I want to play the
next World Cup in New Zealand
in 2020.
Are you married or
do you have a partner?
What is your family
like?
Not at the moment,
it’s me, myself and I.
I have three sisters,
along with my mum
and dad. I have
been spending a lot
of time with them
over the holidays.
I’ve got a really
good group of
friends and great
flatmates who look
after me.
