Jason Milner is an Australian<br />

Vice-Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal, currently work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as a Head of Middle School at<br />

Nibras <strong>International</strong> School. He<br />

has also assumed the responsibilities<br />

of the Director of Educational<br />

Technology, hav<strong>in</strong>g previously<br />

worked <strong>in</strong> this role at other<br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>in</strong> the UAE.<br />

He has a very limited understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of hardware and technical aspects of<br />

servers and wir<strong>in</strong>g, hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>ed as a Physical Education and<br />

Mathematics teacher <strong>in</strong> Australia.<br />

However, he sees himself as a<br />

‘driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>structor’ as opposed to a<br />

‘mechanic’, and is passionate about<br />

expand<strong>in</strong>g pedagogical toolkits <strong>in</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>terests of student-centered<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

An ‘agent for change’, he believes <strong>in</strong><br />

prepar<strong>in</strong>g students for the lives that<br />

they will live.<br />

“ s<strong>in</strong>g devices <strong>in</strong> the classroom is a distraction to<br />

Ulearn<strong>in</strong>g!”<br />

“<strong>The</strong> technology opens up collaborative opportunities for my<br />

students.”<br />

“Computers <strong>in</strong> classrooms prevent students from develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their <strong>in</strong>terpersonal skills.”<br />

“Access to the <strong>in</strong>ternet provides access to learn<strong>in</strong>g beyond the<br />

walls of the classroom.”<br />

We’ve all, no doubt, come across a myriad of arguments, both<br />

for and aga<strong>in</strong>st, regard<strong>in</strong>g the use of technology for learn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

particularly <strong>in</strong> a school environment. As a school leader, and<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g classroom practitioner, I have found myself <strong>in</strong> many<br />

conversations with staff, and parents, regard<strong>in</strong>g whether<br />

technology is the bane of education, or its salvation, enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

enhanced learn<strong>in</strong>g. I will state at the outset that I am most<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely <strong>in</strong> favor of the potential benefits of us<strong>in</strong>g new<br />

technologies <strong>in</strong> the classroom. I say “new technologies” as all<br />

tools for learn<strong>in</strong>g are examples of technology i.e. pen and paper<br />

vs. chalk and slate etc.<br />

I emphasize that us<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong> the classroom is just<br />

another tool <strong>in</strong> a teacher’s toolkit. I believe <strong>in</strong> balance - and<br />

select<strong>in</strong>g the right tool for the job. <strong>The</strong>re is a place for pen and<br />

paper, and there is a place for digital tools. <strong>The</strong> consideration as<br />
