In Memoriam
Robert Paul Abate
Robert Paul Abate, formerly of
Lake Bluff, died on Dec. 5 after
a long illness. He was surrounded
by family members and loving
caregivers. Abate was born
in Oak Park on Jan. 16, 1929.
The only child of Paul and Rose
Freundt Abate, he was raised in
Melrose Park. He was a graduate
from DePaul University and
received his MBA from the University
of Chicago. After college
he embarked on his lifelong career
in banking. He worked at
the American National Bank as
a Group Vice President. While
there he served at the Office of
Education at the requests of Presidents
Johnson and Nixon, helping
to organize the Student Loan
Program. He acquired control of
the Elgin National Bank in 1973.
He was also at the same time,
the Chairman of the Elgin State
Bank, The Plum Grove Bank of
Rolling Meadows, and the First
National Bank of Marengo.
Until his retirement in 2011, he
divided his time between homes
in Lake Bluff and La Quinta,
Calif. The last year and a half of
his life was spent at his home in
Spokane, Wash. For many years
an avid golfer, he was a member
of Bob O’ Link Golf Club
in Highland Park, La Quinta
County Club and The Quarry in
La Quinta, Calif. He was a voracious
reader, reading up to three
to four books a week. He loved
crossword puzzles and movie
trivia. He was known to write
handwritten notes to friends and
family sharing articles in the
news he thought they would appreciate.
He was a man’s man and
was a mentor to many. Abate is
survived by his wife, Sonja; son,
Mark Abate (Gloria) of Greer,
SC; stepchildren, Robin Black of
Palm Desert, CA, Ray Black of
Indio, CA, Rhonda Black of Spokane,
WA; and granddaughter,
Lauren Albright (John) of Palatine,
IL. The family would like to
acknowledge his caregivers and
doctors who were so attentive
and kind, giving him wonderful
care during his last years. Services
were private at his request.
Remembrances in his honor may
be made to Catholic Charities and
the Salvation Army.
Constance Tippens Jordan
96, formerly of Lake Forest and
a longtime resident of Wilmette
and more recently Evanston, died
peacefully on Jan. 1. Jordan was
born on July 12, 1922 in Grand
Rapids, Mich. and grew up as the
eldest child of Albert Harris and
Constance Felt Tippens residing
in Wyoming and Shaker Heights,
Ohio, and Lake Forest and Winnetka.
She was a proud alumna
of Ferry Hall (now a part of Lake
Forest Academy) and a student of
art in Boston, the University of
Arizona, where she was a member
of the Delta Gamma sorority,
and the Chicago Academy of
Fine Arts.
She married the love of her
life, Horace W. Jordan, in 1951
and for the next 60 years together
they raised four children, Robert
Y. Jordan, Constance Jordan
Lochridge, David C. Jordan and
Horace (Hob) W. Jordan, Jr. Jordan
loving nieces and nephews. She
work. During World War II she
worked for the Red Cross in
Chicago and later she worked on
behalf of the Hadley Institute for
the Blind and Visually Impaired
matriarch of her family and took
great joy in sharing tales of family
lore and her adventures as a
daring roller skater and loving
companion to her many dogs.
She was a wonderful artist and
shared her passion by giving multiple
watercolor paintings to her
