Ardern asked to open
Knights Stream School
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
PRIME MINISTER Jacinda
Ardern could be a surprise guest
at the opening of Halswell’s
newest school.
She has been invited to attend
the official opening of the $11
million Knights Stream School
in March.
“We would love a little
baby Neve to come. We
are hoping they would
both come. We are a
family school so it would
be cool to have some other
children here as well,”
principal Mike Molloy
said.
The school, along
with Wigram Primary
School and Ararira
Springs Primary, have
written to Ms Ardern’s
office to see if she can
attend three openings on
March 22.
“We thought that
might be a more lucrative
attraction for a person to come
down and get three lots of things
done,” Mr Molloy said.
But he said the schools would
not know if Ms Ardern could
attend until closer to the time.
will be open from February 4 for
the new school term.
The first stage of Ararira
Springs Primary on Southfield
Drive in Lincoln has also been
completed and will open at the
start of the term.
About 110 pupils will
also start at Knights
Stream School on
February 5. Last week the
school had a site blessing,
which was attended by
Ministry of Education
Canterbury education
director Coralanne Child,
city councillor Anne
Galloway and Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board
member Ross McFarlane.
A karakia was also
performed by Justin
Tipa from Te Taumutu
Rūnanga.
Mr Molloy said the
final landscaping and signage for
the school is being completed.
A cycle track, designed by
Christchurch Adventure Park
operations manager John Paul
Jones, is also being built to give
the pupils somewhere to “let off
a bit of steam.”
Norton credits her youngest
daughter for starting her career
in netball. Fifteen years ago,
her then six-year-old daughter
decided she wanted to play
netball.
But because the primary
school she attended had no
coach, Norton had no choice but
to “step up.” While she had to
“very quickly” teach herself how
to teach others to play the game,
she soon found she had a flair for
coaching.
The Hornby Netball Club
coach and Christchurch Netball
Centre junior co-ordinator said
she “couldn’t believe it” when
she won the award.
“I do a lot of coaching and
I work really hard. I do that
because I want to do my best for
the girls that I coach. But never
at any point did I even think
about things like (the award). It
is incredible,” she said.
The award capped off a
big year for Norton who was
presented the Founders Trophy
by Hornby Netball Club founder
Lynlea Willan at the September
senior prize-giving. She was
then awarded coach of the year
by the Christchurch Netball
Centre.
Willan.
Norton said she is happiest as
a coach when she sees a player
who has struggled in the sport
make an improvement by the
end of the netball season.
“If you can get good results
that is fantastic, but there are
always going to be times when
your results aren’t so good,” she
said. Norton said a key thing
is being able to get people on
the team involved in their own
learning.
“Most people want to be better
at what they are doing and the
only way of doing that is if they
great, and if I can’t, I will just
