Debit Card Compromised?
Here’s why you should think twice
before using your debit card.
This past year I have had 2 debit
cards at First Bank and 1 at BBT
which were compromised by thieves.
The charges were covered by the
banks but what a nuisance it was to
contact credit card, insurance, and
other companies with a new debit
card to pay monthly bills.
For thieves, Debit Cards represent a
lucrative spending opportunity.
In 2017, the number of debit cards
compromised at ATMs and merchant
card readers — typically via skimming
devices that capture card data — rose
10 percent, according to a new report
from data analytics company FICO.
The increase follows two years of
larger spikes in this kind of fraud,
said Michael Betron, senior director
of product management at FICO.
“If you look at it over the last three
years, the rate of compromise has
almost doubled, every year over the
last three years,” he said.
Don’t be so quick to pull out your
debit card for an on-line or in-store
purchase. Fraud protections on a
credit card are superior to those on a
debit card.
“Credit is better than debit for all
transactions, because of the better
consumer protections,” said Paul
Stephens, director of policy and advocacy
for the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.
When at the gas pump and other
merchants and screen says Debit/
Credit, always choose credit.
Be cautious about how your debit
card links to your various bank
accounts, said Stephens. That could
give thieves access to more of your
cash. For example, your bank might
allow you to connect a savings account
to your debit or ATM card.
A better option might be to keep your
checking account balance low, and
hold your savings in a different financial
institution, Stephens said. You
can also opt out from overdraft protection,
meaning a debit transaction
that would overdraw your account
will be declined instead.
Monitor your bank accounts regularly
to spot and report any suspected
problems quickly. Depending on your
financial institution, you may also
be able to set up alerts for large
purchases and other red-flag transactions.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
Shield your data. Use only one card
for on-line purchases. Send bill
payments from your bank instead
of giving debit card number to third
parties to pay cell phones etc.
Enable 2 step verification now offered
by VISA and other systems.
Don’t use the same passwords. Get
free password managers like Last-
Pass or Dashlane stream hard to
crack passwords.
Don’t ever use unsecured WI-FI.
Thieves can intercept your data.
Avoid using ATM machines.
When you are traveling alert your
bank. Several times I have tried to
use a debit card and it was declined
as a security measure from my bank.
Check your activity every day.
With debit card fraud you have 60
days from the fraudulent transaction
to alert your bank. If you miss
that 60-day window your bank might
not cover any of your losses.. If you
realize that your card or PIN was lost
or stolen, you have just two business
days to report the problem and be
liable for only $50 in fraudulent
charges. If you wait longer than two
days (but fewer than 60) you may be
liable for up to $500.
Last year there were almost 2,000
breaches whereby over 36 million records
and 15.4 million were victims
of fraud according to IDTHEFTCEN-
TER.org.
adds up to a very big total.
Here are some easy ways to cut back
on your grocery spend while still
eating great food:
Cut down on the number of times
you go to the supermarket. Every
time you shop it’s easy to slip in a
few items that weren’t on the list
and which aren’t essential. Sticking
to a set routine of shopping no more
than once a week means you have to
pace your eating to make your food
supplies last.
There are some people who love entertaining
either at home or restaurants
or who regularly feed extended
family members. Feeding others
as well as yourself is a wonderful
thing to do, so long as you can truly
afford it.
Plan meals one or two weeks ahead
so you have all the ingredients you
need on hand. That way you won’t
have to make extra trips to the supermarket.
Prepare meals ahead and freeze or
reheat them. Cooking in big batches
means you can buy in bulk. Having
ready cooked meals on hand when
you are busy means fewer takeaway
or convenience meals.
The amount you spend on food will
be partly determined by where you
live and of course, the number of
family members. However, food
costs also depend on your lifestyle
– how much and what type of food
you put in your shopping cart.
The most recent survey indicates
the latest numbers for a four-member
family: a thrifty food plan, $146
a week; a low-cost food plan, $191
a week; a moderate-cost plan,
$239; a liberal plan, $289 a week.
That’s a whopping $143 a week
difference between basic and
liberal. Over a year that’s $7176.
Compounded over a ten-year period
at 3 per cent, the difference is over
Eat less meat. A couple of vegetarian
meals a week saves money and
improves your diet.
Keep a few treats and deli snacks on
hand at home to reduce the temptation
to go out for coffee or lunch.
Cutting back on certain expenses
such as alcohol and takeaways is a
lot easier than trying to cut them out
altogether. It’s likely you will be more
motivated to make changes if you
focus on healthier eating choices
rather than saving money, however
with careful planning you should
achieve both.
Of course, there are times when you
just have to cut yourself some slack.
Affordable Classic Cars
We admire classic cars from a
distance as unobtainable trophies
for wealthy enthusiasts. We dream
about driving them, but don’t bother
shopping for them because of our
assumptions that these head turners
are out of reach.
There are more affordable classic
cars that are easy to live with than
you might think. You don’t even need
to know a lot about cars to own them
and drive them. If you’re getting tired
of your boring car and craving something
a little more interesting, here
are some classic cars that anyone
can own.
#1 Original Volkswagen Beetle
The longest running automotive platform
of all time, the original people’s
car is still an icon. Its quirky design
and everyday practicality make it an
appealing classic that can easily be
daily driven.
The car made a few changes here
and there over its massive 65-year
production run, but many features of
the car endured.
that everyone loves. This one will
have more people stopping you in
the parking lot to talk about your
car than anything else on this list.
Famously called “the mullet of cars”,
the El Camino is business in the
front, party in the back. While everyone
knows it’s a classic, not everyone
knows how attainable they are.
You might not find a pristine 1970
SS at an affordable price, but there
are plenty of other El Caminos out
there for under $10k.
#4 Datsun 240Z
Globally known as the Nissan S30
and sold as the Datsun 240Z, this
was a landmark in Japanese sports
cars. Its stunning design with some
noticeable European influence made
the car a hit. It didn’t hurt that it
had the performance to back up its
looks. The Z Car started production
in 1969 and is still alive through a
series of successors to this day.
placed with black rubber bumpers.
They’re pretty ugly compared to the
chrome alternative, but they don’t
come close to ruining the look of the
handsome roadster. Even the clean
ones go for under $5k.
#6 Porsche 944
Purists will tell you this wasn’t a real
Porsche because of its off-brand
configuration. It had a liquid cooled
inline four cylinder engine in the
front of the car rather than the traditional
air cooled boxer engine behind
the driver. The purists can say what
they want, but this is a perfectly
legitimate sports car. This is great
for people who like Porsche, but are
afraid of the maintenance on a more
traditional model.
#7 Chevy Bel Air
The 25 year model run make the
Bel Air a much more versatile model
than just the ubiquitous “57 Chevy”.
While the 50’s models are the most
iconic for good reasons, Bel Airs
were also formidable muscle cars
through the mid-1970’s. The fun of
Bel Airs is the multitude of configurations.
of it as a muscle car, the original
idea of the Charger was a personal
luxury car similar to the Buick Riviera
or Ford Thunderbird. Of course you
can get an R/T with a monstrous
Hemi V8, but there’s a lot more to
the classic Dodge Charger than just
that.
#9 Mercedes R107
This version of the classic Mercedes
SL Class is right in the sweet spot
of affordability right now. It was
available as a soft-top convertible,
removable hardtop, or you could get
the C107 which was the same car as
a coupe with a fixed roof. The United
States was the biggest market for
these cars with over half of them
being sold here.
Any used Mercedes is a great way
to make you look wealthier than you
actually are, why not do it with a fun
roadster?
#2 Ford Mustang
Another car with a long, storied production
run, the Mustang has several
affordable styles to offer. From the
legendary first generation, the boxy
Fox body, and more modern examples,
Mustangs will get you noticed.
Mustangs aren’t just designed to
look good and be fun to drive; they’re
also designed to be low-cost. That
makes them abundant and affordable
today.
#3 Chevy El Camino
The El Camino is a classic oddity
#5 MG MGB
MG is a largely forgotten brand
today, but they were one of the premier
manufacturers of British roadsters
for decades. One of their most
famous examples is the MGB. It was
available as a roadster convertible or
as a GT.
The MGB experienced a styling
change that’s still controversial
among enthusiasts. In 1974, its
sleek chrome bumpers were re-
They could be had as coupes, sedans,
four door station wagons, two
door shooting brakes, and even convertibles.
In classic American fashion,
they had a list of different V8’s
available under the hood. However,
some of the more common models
are going on the cheap.
#8 Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger is synonymous
with American muscle. It was based
on the intermediate sized Dodge
Coronet, but available only as a fastback
coupe. While most of us think
#10 Chevy Camaro
The Chevy Camaro is the crosstown
rival to the Ford Mustang. The
current sixth generation Camaro is
arguably the best one ever made,
but there is a lot to be desired in the
classics.
Camaros are fun to shop for because
you can decide on just about
any budget and you can find a
Camaro that fits in that price range.
You can spend under $5k on a late
second gen-early fourth gen or you
can spend just about as much as
you want on some of the more iconic
models like a first gen Z/28. Get a
V8 if you want to go fast or get a V6
if you just want to look cool.
Girl Scout Cookie entrepreneurs are
relationship builders. By running
their own cookie business, they gain
valuable practice communicating
skills that will help them succeed in
In July 1922, The American Girl magazine,
published by Girl Scouts of the
USA, featured an article by Florence
E. Neil, a local director in Chicago,
Illinois. Miss Neil provided a cookie
recipe that had been given to the
council’s 2,000 Girl Scouts. She
estimated the approximate cost of
ingredients for six- to seven-dozen
cookies to be 26 to 36 cents. The
cookies, she suggested, could be
sold by troops for 25 or 30 cents per
dozen.
Throughout the decade, Girl Scouts
in different parts of the country
continued to bake their own simple
sugar cookies with their mothers and
with help from the community. These
cookies were packaged in wax paper
bags, sealed with a sticker, and sold
door to door.
Half of your friends swear that
buying a car is the only way to go.
The other half? They’re just about
ready to trade in their sedan for
a souped-up SUV. Yep, car buying
is often a touchy subject. But the
truth is, it’s a super-personal decision
that depends solely on your
own lifestyle. On the fence about
what’s right for you? Here are a few
reasons you might want to lease,
and a couple reasons to consider
buying instead.
YOU’LL HAVE LOWERPAYMENTS
Got $30K laying around? No?
Neither do most people, which is
why they take out loans to purchase
new cars. And when they do,
not only do they pay back the cost
of the car, they also have to pay
interest every month. On the other
hand, when you lease a car, you
primarily pay for the car’s depreciation
so you could spend roughly 30
percent less on monthly payments
compared with the monthly cost of
a loan to own a car.
In fact, 2017 data has shown lease
specials offered by dealerships
going for as low as $200 a month
compared with $500 a month if you
buy a brand-new car.
YOU’LL ALWAYS PAY SOMETHING
Here’s the thing. While lease
payments may require less money
up front and per month, you can
get caught in a cycle of continually
leasing, meaning you’ll always have
a payment. However, the typical
loan agreement for buying a new
car is about 69 months, according
to 2017 data. This means that if
you’re planning to own your vehicle
for more than six years, you eventually
won’t have car payments at all.
GET A NEW CAR EVERY 3 YEARS
Lease contracts typically only last
for three years. And if you choose
to turn in your leased car, that
means you can start a new lease
on a brand-new car, so you’ll always
be driving something that’s in its
most trouble-free years. If driving the
latest model vehicle (either for the
shiny factor or the safety factor) is
something that’s important to you,
leasing is definitely the way to go.
BUT YOU’RE EXPECTED TO KEEP IT
IN PERFECT CONDITION
Leasing a car is just like renting an
apartment: Even though you have
full run of the place for a set amount
of time, it’s not technically yours.
And when you hand the keys back
over, they expect it to be left in tiptop
shape. Same goes for a leased
vehicle, which can be tougher than it
sounds (especially if messy kids are
involved).
YOU DON’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE
RESALE...
When the time comes that you’re
ready to move on and get a new
car, you won’t have to worry about
depreciation and resale. The dealership
you leased it from will handle
everything—all you have to do is turn
in the keys and decide what kind of
car you want to lease next. It’s a big
weight off your shoulders.
YOU’RE ONLY ALLOWED X MILES
When you picture your next car, do
you see cool a set of wheels you can
use to zoom around town? Or do you
have visions of a nice, roomy vehicle
that’s perfect for road trips? If it’s
the latter, know this: Lease terms
always come with mileage caps.
Meaning, if you go over a certain
number of miles, you’ll have to pay a
fee. (In most cases, you’re restricted
to 10,000 to 12,000 miles annually—after
that, you’ll pay around 25
cents a mile for any overage.) So be
realistic about how you’re actually
using the vehicle—if the answer is “a
lot,” leasing might not be the way to
go.
Caring Hearts for Canines is a
501c3 non-profit dog rescue based
out of Southern Pines, and has rescued
over 2000 dogs since 2016.
appalling and unacceptable. The mission
of Caring Hearts for Canines is
to rescue and rehome dogs at risk of
being euthanized in high kill shelters
and to educate the public in order to
decrease the proliferation of these
unwanted dogs.
RADAR
Radar has only sunshine and adoration
in his heart for everyone he
meets!
He was brought to the shelter after
being dumped from a vehicle.
He is a happy, playful boy who loves
to play with his toys and romp around
our yard. Radar is a young, Pitbull Terrier
mix just under 30 lbs.
He has been neutered and is up to
date on vaccinations. He would love
nothing more than to find his new
family to adore and will have you smiling
ear to ear at his fun-loving nature!
BUCK
Buck is a sweet soul. He enjoys attention
from his humans and is independent
too. He loves to be thrown
toys or play a little tug of war but is
also content with a leisurely stroll.
He did very nicely with one of our
younger school-age volunteers and
was respectful of their smaller size.
Buck is a neutered 4-year old who
was surrendered by his owners who
were moving to Alaska, along with
his sibling Kathy.
He is a Siberian Husky and Irish
Setter mix. Buck needs a safe yard
for play/exercise, and a family with
an active lifestyle.
Seven Lakes News January Edition Page 17
I am a 65-year-old man. When my
grandfather was my age, he carried
a walking stick and was shuffling
towards his grave. Happily, my own
prospects — and those of many
of the 760 million people in the
world who are over the age of 60 —
couldn’t be more different.
Statistics show all too clearly why we
cannot afford to stick our heads in
the sand and continue to view older
people as a sickly burden rather
than a valuable resource. At the end
of the 19th century, in Germany, Bismarck
invented the social security
system we know today. At that time,
few people reached the age of 65,
and those who did were likely to be
in poor health.
Now, 130 years later, we still deal
with aging as if it was the 19th
century. Life expectancy is now
is 35 years longer than it was in
Bismarck’s time. Those 30 years of
life after work must be made productive.
If not, the cost of maintaining a
rapidly growing older population will
have a devastating effect on younger
generations, who simply won’t be
able to generate the tax income to
support older people’s quality of life
and growing healthcare costs.
We need an entirely different approach,
something that recognizes
that growing into old age is a long
transition taking 20 or 30 years,
rather than a sudden cutting off
point. It should mean more flexibility
in the workplace. It should include
staggered retirements and a greater
use of sabbaticals, so that an
older person can go away for a year,
recharge his or her batteries, and
come back with more energy and
new skills.
Us baby boomers are precisely the
generation who are bringing about
this revolution. Never before have we
seen a cohort hitting the age of 65
who are so well informed, so wealthy
and in such good health. In the same
way that my generation transformed
adolescence into a protracted period
of experimentation, creativity and
rebellion, so too are we redefining
what it means to age.
The New “Boomers”
We will not allow our rights to be
ignored and we will not be fobbed off
with the idea that all we are fit for is
a spot of light volunteering. If we fail
to adapt to the new reality, we risk a
social convulsion, a fracture dividing
the generations which pits one set of
interests against another.
Baby boomers are leading the way,
showing younger people that getting
old is the best thing that can happen
to them. There is only one alternative
to aging.
There are so many older adults in
Florida that they’ve created their
own city. The Villages, located smack
in the center of the state, has a
population of 157,000 people. By
design and by fiat, virtually all of its
residents are over the age of 55. The
Villages has its own culture, its own
norms, its own lifestyle. The primary
mode of transportation is the golf
cart. Tens of thousands of the little
white vehicles crisscross the landscape.
Accordingly, the community’s
slogan is “Free golf for life!” It is the
sort of arrangement one looks at
and says, “Only in Florida.”
But Florida is not as unique as you
might think. One of America’s numerous
(and sometimes infamous)
Baby Boomers turns 65 every eight
seconds. In about a decade, we will
become a nation of Florida’s.
Making such a society livable will require
far more than golf carts. It will
demand a great deal from all of us
— entrepreneurs, employers, policymakers
and, yes, as individuals. In a
world in which nearly half the population
is over the age of 50, we will
have to start thinking of older people
differently, more expansively.
In the mid-to-late 1800s, antiquated
medical theory suggested that the
only healthy thing for older adults to
do was rest. Surviving well into the
21st century is the idea that older
people are “supposed” to be consumers
of ideas, work, products and
culture, but never producers: always
takers; never givers.
Today, ask anyone over the age of 60
or so if she wants to sit in a rocking
chair for the rest of her life — on
average, a far longer life than at the
turn of the 20th century — and they
will laugh you out of the room.
Living longer and better may mean
working longer. It may mean a lifetime
of learning and growth. We may
see older adults in roles to which we
are not accustomed: retail, manufacturing,
teaching and delivering
healthcare (not just receiving it). The
energy we draw from our older population
may grow to become one of
our most valuable resources. Businesses
founded by people over the
age of 50 are already major sources
of employment across the nation.
Products designed with older people
in mind must go beyond vitamins,
walkers and pill-reminder systems.
An aging society has given rise to
a new multi-trillion-dollar market of
consumers who want not just to be
taken care of but also live out aspirations
once considered impossible in
old age.
In particular, technologies no longer
should be built on the antiquated
idea that older people must remain
separate from society and at
rest. Consider those simplified cell
phones that only call one’s kids
and 911: a technology of universal
connection reduced down to two
contacts. Once upon a time, such
devices made sense for many older
adults. But as tech-savvy boomers
age into their 70s and beyond, most
will demand tech with full functionality
that is also highly usable. No one
who uses an iPhone now is going to
switch back to a push-button device
willingly, no matter their age.
But as we become a nation of Floridas,
we must be careful to avoid
producing too many of those most
peculiarly Floridian phenomena:
communities like The Villages.
Nothing is wrong with The Villages.
Its residents are very happy and
that’s the most important consideration
about a place where people
live. It offers a lifestyle that is attractive
to many wonderful people, and
a deserved respite from youth-oriented
culture. But it also represents a
troubling possible future for our era
of longevity: one in which the young
and old segregate themselves from
each other.
We continue to write a story of old
age that retires people away from everyone
else, rather than finding ways
to engage them, to activate their
talents. In response, it’s only natural
that older people would choose to
cloister themselves away.
The challenge we all face is to actively
build an age-ready nation. The
longevity economy in the U.S. alone
adds up to over a hundred million
older people, many of whom have
the potential to live beyond the age
of 100. We need to be ready.
A successful nation of Florida’s will
require so much more than van rides
and pills and home health aides.
More than anything, we as individuals
will have to rethink old age, both
for the sake of those older than us
and, more selfishly, for our own future
selves. Done right will improve
quality of life across the board. After
all, if we’re lucky, the future of old
age is the future for everyone.
