Walking into Community College
North Canterbury, you instantly get
the feel that this place is different to
school.
Students in chef outfits are busy
preparing food before their busy café
day. The barista machine hums as
students fine-tune their coffee-making
skills.
Sports students head off to the gym
for their daily workout and Emerge
prepares for a day orienteering on
mountain bikes.
Out the back, equine students are
busy on the yard working with college
horses.
All this is free if you are aged 16
to 19 years. Imagine achieving a
qualification, without having to pay
school fees,
uniform and
stationery costs.
The current
secondary
school system
does not always
work well for
all students and
for some with a
more practical nature, an alternative is
needed.
Community College provides “Handson”
experiences and support by tutors
in real-life situations.
Literacy and numeracy are embedded
in these real-life learning experiences.
Championships last Saturday.
Hollie pedals to third at
Oceania BMX champs
NORTH Avon
Christchurch BMX Club
rider Hollie Tribble has
made her mark at an
international level.
Hollie, 8, who lives in St
Albans, finished third at
the Oceania Continental
Championships last
Saturday in Te Awamutu,
where she competed
against riders a year older
than her.
The event for nineyear-olds
was won by
Cambridge rider Beth
Walker. More than 500
riders competed at the
champs – eight of them
from the North Avon
Christchurch club.
Hollie qualified after
finishing eighth at the
national competiton in
New Plymouth last year,
in spite of suffering a big
crash during the race.
Earlier this month,
Hollie competed at the
South Island BMX Titles
in Dunedin, where she
won all of her seven races
and the overall event for
girls aged seven to nine,
defending her 2018 title as
the top South Island rider
in her category. Hollie
started riding at age four
after her mother Hayley
Groves took her to watch
a national competition in
Hornby.
“She decided then that
she wanted to be a BMX
rider, so she tested us until
she could get a BMX bike
and go to training,” said
Ms Groves.
Hollie said her favourite
part about riding is
“travelling around New
Zealand” with friends from
her club. The Elmwood
Normal School pupil will
soon have to balance three
to four days of training a
week.
“Training is after
school so sometimes
homework can be a
challenge, but Hollie tries
to complete her homework
before school each day by
getting up early,” said Ms
Groves. •More sport p12
