North-west bowlers’ finals success<br />

ELMWOOD PARK, Burnside<br />

and Canterbury 2017 bowling<br />

clubs were dominant at the<br />

recent Bowls Canterbury centre<br />

finals day.<br />

Elmwood took out the most<br />

tiles of any club with six.<br />

Burnside captured four titles,<br />

while Canterbury won two.<br />

The biggest event of the finals<br />

weekend was the men’s 3x4<br />

Pennant Series – a relatively<br />

new trophy introduced by Bowls<br />

Canterbury – which sees the<br />

winner decided by the overall<br />

aggregate score across three<br />

fours matches.<br />

The final was contested<br />

between Burnside and Elmwood<br />

Park, who accounted for Belfast<br />

and Parklands in their respective<br />

semi-finals.<br />

Burnside won two of the three<br />

ties 18-16, 19-15, 16-18 to win<br />

53-49.<br />

Burnside also had titles go<br />

to Angela Boyd, Kirsten Rowe,<br />

Tessa Lee and Rachel Davies in<br />

the women’s fours.<br />

In the final they defeated<br />

Canterbury’s Kim Rowlands,<br />

Donelda Scott, Faye Dodd and<br />

Annabel Walmisley 20-10. In<br />

Elmwood’s six titles went<br />

to Mary Ann Johnstone and<br />

Joyce McKinnel who defeated<br />

Burnside’s Tayla Bruce and Cait<br />

Bassett 20-5 to win the women’s<br />

pairs. John Mears, Bruce<br />

Humphreys and Don Baker won<br />

the over 60s triples by defeating<br />

Halswell’s Rex Carpinter, John<br />

Connolly and John Topham<br />

18-4.<br />

The mixed pairs went to Paul<br />

McKinnel and Pam Phair who<br />

fended off Bev Morel and Jason<br />

Dunn 10-7.<br />

Chris Kibblewhite, Fiona<br />

Frew and Theresa Woodham<br />

won the women’s triples against<br />

Burnside’s Tayla Bruce, Tessa<br />

Less and Alex Wilkinson 16-10.<br />

The men’s triple title went to<br />

Rodney Greaney, Stephen Ditfort<br />

and Ian Rule who beat Burnside’s<br />

Mike Small, Barry Williams and<br />

Richard Hocking.<br />

While the under eights title<br />

was won by Bruce Humphreys<br />

who defeated Halswell’s Phil<br />

Austin 21-15.<br />

Canterbury’s two titles<br />

were won by Rick Day and<br />

Jim Stenhouse who defeated<br />

Sumner’s Graeme Taggart and<br />

Roger Glendinning 21-10 in the<br />

over 60’spairs final.<br />

Chris Bates won the over<br />

60s singles title by defeating<br />

Hawarden’s Brett Gardiner<br />
