How To Cope When
Your Partner Is Unwell
Whether it’s a long-term illness
or a passing cold, life isn’t easy
when your partner is ill. Perhaps
you rely on them to help with
childcare or maybe they are a
difficult patient to care for.
Whatever your situation, here
are some ways to cope when your
partner is unwell:
Ask for help from
elsewhere
If you’re shouldering the burden
of housework, childcare and
your own job, all while caring
for your sick partner, you
may feel like there’s no
time to relax or take
time out for yourself.
If your partner is likely to be
unwell for several weeks or months,
then it’s wise to seek help elsewhere.
Ask your extended family or friends
if they can provide support.
Look after yourself
You can’t care for someone else
effectively if you don’t first care for
yourself. So even if you’re struggling
to keep on top of everything while
your partner is out of action, make
sure you find the time to
relax – even if it’s just
for five minutes
while enjoying
a cup of tea.
Remember to
eat properly
and get enough sleep so that you
can stay healthy to help your
partner recover.
Address financial
worries head on
When a partner is sick it might
mean less money coming into the
household – particularly if they (or
you) have to take time off work. If
you’re worried about how you will
cover the bills while your partner is
unwell, seek professional help from
local advisors.
Speak to your boss
Explain the situation to your boss.
They might be willing to let you
work shorter hours or reduce your
workload while your partner is sick.
