While almost all of us were told by countless officials and broadcasters to stay inside and out of the dangerously cold, “lifethreatening” temperatures, police officers, firefighters and Public Works employees did not have the choice to take off for a few days until the polar vortex blew over. Not only could the men and women who make up these teams not take any time off, in many ways, they were working overtime to help residents with the slew of problems caused by some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded in the village’s 120-year history. Though the new year got off to a mostly mild start, temperatures dropped below zero and stayed there for several days during the last week of January, prompting Gov. JB Pritzker to issue a disaster proclamation for all of Illinois on Jan. 29. Temperatures reached as low as 25 degrees below zero, while wind chills made it feel more like 35 degrees below zero in places. According to multiple reports, the polar vortex has been linked to several deaths in Cook County. Village officials reported the brutal cold caused at least six water line breaks, while power outages caused by downed lines left more than 3,000 Glenview residents without electricity at some point during the deep freeze. While most of us were worried about staying warm and making the most of our newfound time during the week, police officers, firefighters and Public Works employees were hard at work, helping those who needed it the most. See Page 8 for more details. nfyn From Page 14 THE GLENCOE ANCHOR Glencoe boy asks for charitable donations instead of Bar Mitzvah gifts Alex Goldberg took the idea of service to heart. The Glencoe Central School seventh-grader was making his Bar Mitzvah and had to do a service project beforehand. Some young people might look forward to such a special occasion in their lives as a time for having a big party and receiving gifts. Goldberg thought otherwise. “I live in Glencoe and am fortunate to have so many good things in my life,” Goldberg said. “I wanted to do something different and use my service project as a way to help others, especially kids.” Goldberg and his parents began researching organizations and discovered Chicago Cares, which directed them to the Belmont- Cragin Public Elementary School (K-8) on Chicago’s Northwest Side. It shares space with the Northwest Middle School. “Chicago Cares is a nonprofit organization that helps prospective volunteers find volunteer opportunities throughout the Chicago area,” said Lori Golberg, Alex’s mother. “Requests often come from a business or organization whose employees or members want to do service projects en masse like on a weekend. THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK Preliminary plan for Karger Center redevelopment receives green light with mixed reviews Residents who enjoy the public park behind the Karger Center may have some reduced sunshine as City Council approved a preliminary plan for a 171- unit, 5-story apartment complex to replace the center at its Jan. 28 meeting. The property, 1850 Green Bay Road, was bought for $3.76 million, more than $250,000 over the asking price, from the city in January 2018 by developers Albion Jacobs Highland Park, LLC. The preliminary plan was presented at the meeting and approved 4-2 by City Council and Mayor Nancy Rotering with the two nay votes coming from Councilman Daniel Kaufman and Councilwoman Kim Stone. Councilman Anthony Blumberg was absent from the meeting. “I’m generally supportive of this. I think more density in the downtown area is a good thing,” Stone said.
