WESTERN NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday February 12 2019 3 News Fire concern heightened • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A SERIES of vegetation fires beside railway lines in Templeton last week has heightened the need to clean up overgrown grass beside the tracks in Hornby. Greater Hornby Residents’ Association member Mark Peters said the fires in Templeton last week were “really horrendous” to see. He had previously Mark Peters warned weeds next to the tracks adjacent to Carmen Rd could be a potential fire risk due to trains. Last week a southbound train was under investigation after the Templeton fires. The Dunedin-bound train was stopped north of Rolleston after the fires broke out beside State Highway 1. “Hopefully it focuses the importance of getting this hazard in the heart of Hornby rectified sooner rather than later so we don’t have a similar episode,” Mr Peters said. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER But KiwiRail South Island operations general manager Jeanine Benson said it is still investigating the cause of the fires alongside the train tracks. The city council agreed to tidy up the Hornby weeds in a bid to reduce any potential fire risk after the issue was raised by city councillor Jimmy Chen. The work was scheduled to start on Saturday. Mr Peters said it was great to see Cr Chen taking the initiative but it would have been “ideal” for KiwiRail to come to the party straight away and not “muck around.” KiwiRail land use strategy general manager Stephanie Campbell said it advised the leaseholder of the issue in November and is working with them to get it sorted as soon as possible. It would not reveal who the leaseholder of the land was. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said the maintenance of the area where the fires started could have been better. “We were just lucky they got it on time and we didn’t have any more danger than we had,” he said. Mr Peters said hopefully the fact the train tracks in Hornby are used less frequently will mean there is less risk. “But still it only takes one train to go through there and a couple of sparks and suddenly she is all go . . . there will be a lot of nervous residents I’d imagine,” Mr Peters said. It will include work on the changing rooms, toilets, reception foyer and café and is expected to be finished in April. Phase one, which included reopening the outdoor pools and the hydroslide, was finished in December. AVONHEAD CEMETERY NAME The city council is this week due to consider whether a proposed name change to Avonhead Park Cemetery will go out for public consultation, said Fendalton- Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman Sam MacDonald. The Avonhead Community Group and Friends of Avonhead Cemetery support changing the name to Avonhead Memorial Cemetery in honour of the quake victims buried there. DECISION ON RESERVE The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board is due to make a decision tomorrow on whether land at Owaka 2 Reserve, 50 Wilmers Rd, Hornby, will be transferred to the Government.
