Joey Mills Presents His New
Novel at NYC’s Strand Bookstore
“Electric Soul” is a coming-of-age novel
that chronicles Helix Studios model
Joey Mills before he was famous.
Written by former middle school
teacher Taylor Saracen, the YA book
tells the tale of a reckless, brazen and
unapologetically outspoken young Mills,
who—for reasons he can’t explain—
chooses to hide a key part of his true
self from the world. It is a journey in self-discovery, as well as an
unconventionally heartwarming story of the relationship between a
troubled teen and his mother.
“Electric Soul” releases to select bookstores, Amazon and most
e-book retailers worldwide on February 21. Mills and author Taylor are
currently on a nationwide book tour to promote “Electric Soul.” The
tour stops at Strand Bookstore in NYC on February 25. We spoke with
Mills from his LA home.
INTERVIEW
How does it feel to be the subject
of a book?
It’s a weird feeling, something I definitely
never thought I would get to experience or
accomplish. I’m excited to share it, but it
does make me feel vulnerable, because it
touches on raw subjects that people don’t
know about me.
You’re 20 years old! Isn’t that a little
young for a story about your life?
I’ve lived a lot of life in my 20 years! When
you read the book, you’ll see what I mean.
Physically, I feel like I’m 30 or 40. Mentally
I’m, like, 10, because I still have yet to get
my shit together.

or educators want to
believe is true in America
today.
Exactly, and it’s important
for people to understand
that this is a real story
from the point of view of
a real kid growing up in
Midwest America. I think
many people may have a
preconceived idea of who
Joey Mills is based on
the movies they’ve seen,
but I hope they will dive
into this book without
judgement.
The book is listed as
a YA novel. Is it really
appropriate for gay
youth to read?
Yes. I learn from the
mistakes I make in the
novel. It doesn’t lead
readers to follow in
my footsteps; it simply
touches on the struggles
most teenagers deal with.
I think it will help a lot of
people.
Why did you struggle
with telling people about
your sexuality?
I think most young people
struggle with it. I came
from a really small town,
and I expected it to be way
more homophobic. Luckily,
it wasn’t what I’d expected
at all.
How did your
relationship with your
mom impact your
coming-out process?
It definitely helped,
because she told me
beforehand that she
wouldn’t care if I was gay.
I had to do it on my own
time, though.
How would you
describe that mom/
son relationship, and
what contributed to
it?
At the time the novel
takes place, we were
very close, but it was
more love/hate. I think
that’s how it is for most
teenagers. I was always
a mama’s boy. I still am.
How did your early
experiences lead to a
career in adult film?
I am a huge fan of more
money for less work.
[laughs] It seemed like
a good fit for my goals.
What are your biggest
regrets from youth?
I regret fucking
everything up in high
school. It would have
changed my life for the
better if I had taken
it more seriously. Or
maybe it wouldn’t have.
It would be interesting
to know.
What are you most
proud of today?
I made it out of my
hometown. That was
an accomplishment.
I still visit and love it,
but I’m happy to have
expanded my horizons.
I’m proud to say I live
a life that many people
could only dream of.
What advice would
you give your young
self today?
Save money. Don’t buy
that red piece of shit
car. And most of all,
don’t do drugs before
heading off to school. It
never ends well.

Yeah, you’re more than
just a little bitter, but
you can make it easier
on yourself. First, if
the social media posts
bother you, just don’t
look. For all of the
14th, and probably the
15th, just don’t go on.
Second, part of the
reason you’re irritated is
that you’re jealous you
don’t have an outing
to look forward to for
that day/night. You
can change that. Talk
to your friends that are
also single and plan a
fun activity. One year for
V-day, I had a “F* Love”
party for all my friends,
and it was awesome.
It gave me something
to look forward to and
amazing people to party
with. On the flip side,
my crush showed up
and interpreted it as I
didn’t want a boyfriend,
so maybe avoid inviting
someone like that.
Right now I’m casually
dating two guys. One
of them I made plans

with for
Valentine’s Day; he
asked me first. Then
the other guy asked
me, so I told him that
I already have plans.
I didn’t want to lie to
him, so I think I made
the right call. He said
he’s fine with that, but
now he’s being really
passive aggressive,
and the other night
he told me he’s mad
because he didn’t
think I was seeing
anyone else. That’s
something we’ve
never discussed, and
now I feel like a jerk.
Did I do something

Dating more than one
person can be pretty
tricky, but there’s
nothing wrong with it.
I like that you were up
front with him and didn’t
lie. He may not have
liked your response,
but you were honest
and should get some
points for that. It’s clear
this second guy likes
you, but it’s also telling
in how he handled the
conflict. If you want to
continue seeing him,
I’d suggest you ask him
to celebrate Valentine’s
Day with you on a
different day. But also
be aware, it sounds like
he wants something
more than casual.

Last summer, my friends Jack and Kate planned
a weekend getaway to a cabin upstate.
We took two cars: Kate and her cousin in one,
Jack, his boyfriend Stirling, my boyfriend James
and me in the other.
I packed all new outfits in my olive green
Michael Kors weekender (I needed new clothes,
since we’d be spending the weekend hiking
and grilling, and I didn’t think it would make
sense to do that in Valentino), as well
as a small bottle of portable lube.
The second we pulled our
Zipcar into the driveway, I
started scoping out where I
wanted to sneak away for
a romance-novel-worthy
sexcapade after everyone
else had fallen asleep. My
first inclination was outside:
perhaps in the wooded area
near the front? No, it wasn’t
quite wooded enough;
anybody driving by would
definitely see us plowing
each other. Out back, near
the shed? The location was
guarded, but the greenery
grew several feet tall
back there, and I wasn’t
convinced we wouldn’t get
poison ivy. (Can you even
imagine poison ivy… down
there? Horrifying.)
When everyone finally
called it a night, I realized
that our bedroom was going
to be our best bet. I made
sure to pick our room first, the
room furthest away from the
others. “I’m so excited for this
weekend,” I said, removing my
Puma tank top as seductively as I
could.
“Yeah? I didn’t even know you liked
doing outdoor things,” James said,
jumping into bed.
“Well, I mean. Not really. But, I like
spending time with you…” I walked
over to the bed. “Alone.” I dropped my
athletic short-shorts, revealing my entirely
impractical mesh briefs.
“Get over here.” I got
into bed and got on
top of him, kissing him,
carefully maneuvering
myself between his legs
to subtly suggest “I’m the
one topping tonight.” He
opened his legs and let me,
and I kissed him harder.
Once all of our clothes
were off, I reached for
the portable lube. It really
was exciting: There’s
something so refreshing
about being in an unfamiliar
environment, about being
away from home. It was
new; it was passionate.
At one point, I put
my arms under him
and picked him up,
holding him while I
fucked him. When
my arms got
tired, I moved
to put him back
down on the
bed—losing
my grip and
dropping
him. His

head landed against the
wall with a loud THUD
that I’m sure woke the
whole house, as well as
several of the creatures
hanging out in the
poison ivy outside.
“Fuck!” I whispered,
reaching around to
cradle his head. “I am
SO sorry.”
“It’s OK, it’s OK,” he said.
“Keep going.”
“Are you sure?” I asked. He
nodded, so I did, and the
thought that my boyfriend
might have a concussion
definitely bought me another 10
minutes or so.
We didn’t get poison ivy, but he did
have a bump on the back of his head
for the next week, and he hasn’t let
me pick him up again since.

I spoke to JC Events, which hopes
to create an entirely new party
experience, one that remains in the
minds of those who attend forever.

How is this party going to
celebrate WorldPride? Where
and when will it take place?
This is a two-night event,
correct?
Yes, this will be a two-night
event! We will be celebrating
WorldPride by premiering two
amazing and inclusive parties:
Frisky Party on June 28 and
Yummy Party on June 29 at the
beautiful Melrose Ballroom. It’s
very easy to get there and only
15 minutes from Manhattan
across the 59th Street Bridge.
There are going to be lots
of parties going on. What is
different about yours that will
entice people to come?
For sure, there are going to be
lots of parties, which we believe
is a good thing considering that
lots of people will be coming
to New York as well. So now
they will have more options
to celebrate Pride. We are
focusing on creating a whole new
experience to remain in people’s
memories. Our incredible DJ
lineup and performers are
preparing something very special,
so you can’t miss it. Last but
not least, Melrose Ballroom is a
beautiful venue with advanced
technology for an incredible
celebration.
What inspired you to have this
party?
WorldPride was our inspiration to
create FRISKY and YUMMY. We
believe our LGBTQ community
has been through many battles:
fighting for equality, diversity and
freedom. We have conquered so
much, so now is the time to show
the world our victory. FRISKY
and YUMMY more than just
parties; they are celebrations for
everyone.
