COMMENT
Welcome to the first Document
Manager of the new year, which
includes a feature in which we ask a
range of industry luminaries for their
thoughts and predictions for 2019. As you
might expect, there is a diverse range of
views on offer with regard to emerging
trends and technologies - what Mrs. Merton
would have called a 'heated debate'.
While most of our experts agree broadly that we are in for some
disruption across the sector as new technologies (specifically AI and
RPA) begin to have an impact, there is also some healthy cynicism
on display about exactly how big that impact might be; RPA in
particular comes in for some considered analysis.
ABBYY's Neil Murphy says that in order for RPA to become
mainstream we all need to up our data capture game: "CIOs and IT
leaders will realise that to truly benefit from the impact of RPA on
their business, they need to massively improve their capture
capabilities. RPA and data capture work better together - the
bangers and mash of enterprise IT. Together they can help solve the
biggest challenges facing AI-adopting IT departments - how to
improve the quality of data, and how to use this data to bring the
most benefits to the business."
Nuxeo's David Jones, though, is less convinced: "Key trends for me
include 'real world' AI - the actual use of AI to do something useful
like zero touch retention management. I believe RPA revenues will
drop through the floor as people realise that it doesn't actually
deliver any real long term value to an enterprise and is simply a
quick fix."
Whether RPA turns out to be another short-lived IT buzzword or a
total game-changer for the DM/ECM industry remains to be seen,
and of course it is too early to know for sure at present. What we
can say is that you will be far better informed about it, and any
number of other likely trends and drivers, as a result of reading the
feature that starts on page 6 of this issue. As ever, we'd love to
know what our readers think will be the trends for 2019 that will
have most impact on the sector - you can email me at the address
below.
