Port company blasting<br />

at Gollans <strong>Bay</strong> Quarry<br />

THE LYTTELTON Port<br />

Company has started<br />

blasting in Gollans <strong>Bay</strong><br />

Quarry.<br />

The first blast took<br />

place on Thursday. The<br />

operation will include more<br />

blasting and the use of large<br />

earth-moving and mining<br />

machinery.<br />

LPC has advised<br />

members of the public to<br />

keep out of the quarry area,<br />

which is owned by the port<br />

company, and stick to city<br />

council walking tracks.<br />

LPC infrastructure<br />

manager Mike Simmers<br />

said the blasting will<br />

typically occur about<br />

noon, depending on the<br />

site activity and other<br />

constraints.<br />

Mr Simmers said the<br />

blasting would be relatively<br />

quiet compared to the<br />

piling for the harbour’s new<br />

cruise berth.<br />

“It may be audible in<br />

Diamond <strong>Harbour</strong>, but<br />

very unlikely to be heard<br />

in Lyttelton itself. The blast<br />

yesterday was not noticed at<br />

our office,” he said.<br />

The material collected<br />

from the quarrying will<br />

go towards LPC’s land<br />

reclamation project in<br />

which it tis looking to<br />

expand the harbour by<br />

24ha.<br />

“Initial estimates indicate<br />

up to 3.5 million cu m of<br />

material is available from<br />

the quarry.<br />

“However, this may not<br />

all be used to complete<br />

the additional 24ha of<br />

reclamation.”<br />

Andr’e Rasmussen<br />

THE combination of a<br />

Rotary club, Santa Claus<br />

and a birthday in January<br />

was kind for Andr’e<br />

Rasmussen over summer.<br />

The <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> threeyear-old<br />

received a big<br />

present which has added a<br />

new dimension to his life.<br />

Andr’e has numerous<br />

disabilities, including<br />

restricted movement and<br />

minimal sight. He has been<br />

unable to interact easily<br />

with other children, and<br />

unable to share in most of<br />

his family’s activities.<br />

That changed when he<br />

received a Go Baby Go car<br />

– an electric, ride-in toy car<br />

designed for children with<br />

impaired mobility. The cars<br />

are adapted to individual<br />

children’s conditions and<br />

needs, and have dual control<br />

– the child can steer,<br />

but an adult has over-riding<br />

control from a remote.<br />

The aim is to help<br />

children develop spatial<br />

awareness and allow them<br />

to be part of the family<br />

action. Ferrymead<br />

Rotary heard about<br />

Andr’e and funded his<br />

$1600 car through a<br />

special quiz night.<br />

His mum Dannii,<br />

saw potential for<br />

the car to help him<br />

interact with other<br />

children and to allow<br />

him to take a greater<br />

part in family life.<br />

And her hopes have<br />

been fulfilled. Going<br />

to the park is a family<br />

favourite, and Andr’e<br />

has ridden to the local<br />

library and along the<br />

New Brighton pier.<br />

“It has added a lot<br />

more quality of life for<br />

Andr’e and he’s happier<br />

in the family,” said Ms<br />

Rasmussen.<br />
