New street sweepers
will not put
sanitation workers
out of business

which Zoomlion is
a member, Dr Joseph Siaw
Agyepong, has said that the
introduction of ten new
mechanized sweepers into the
country by Zoomlion will only
help enhance the duties of
sanitation workers rather than
make them jobless.
According to him, some
labourers deployed on streets
have on a number of occasions
been hit by vehicles and got
maimed in their line of duty.
“It has therefore been my
motivation to reduce the risk our
country folks go through every
day by introducing these stateof-the-art
modern mechanical
sweepers, comparable to those
found in any advanced country
of the world”
“So this innovation is not to
take away jobs from these hardworking
Ghanaians but will
support them to do their work
better; it would rather add to
their numbers in the long run.”
He made this known
yesterday during a sod-cutting
ceremony at the forecourt of the
State House, Accra, to unveil ten
mechanized street sweepers.
Present on the occasion was
the Greater Accra Regional
Minister, Ishmael Ayitey, who
was the keynote speaker for the
event.
In his speech, he alluded to
government’s commitment to
make Accra the cleanest city in
Africa, and said that was the
reason the President had created
a whole ministry to focus on
sanitation thereby indicating its
readiness to work with any
private sector entity with
laudable initiatives.
He added that “Increasing the
solid waste infrastructure is one
of the priority focus of every
assembly.”
“It is the belief of the
various MMDAs [Metropolitan,
Municipal and District
Assemblies] to look at waste
management in a more holistic
manner along the entire value
chain of collecting, transporting,
disposal and treatment.”
Ing Anthony Mensah,
Director of Sanitation at
Ministry of Sanitation Works
and Housing, also gave a speech
on behalf of the Minsiter, Hajia
Alima Mahama.
He highlighted some benefits
of the sweepers, stating “Some
of the benefits of these multipurpose
sweepers include
automatically sweeping,
scrubbing and dumping of
refuse with the help of an
embedded water tank that helps
recover debris, clears stagnant
water et al.”
The ceremony was graced by
various government officials and
traditional leaders.
