Exploring Antarctica on a kayak
A CHRISTCHURCH woman is
about to head to Antarctica to
kayak with an Olympian – all in
the name of inspiring others to
get out and explore.
Ara Institute of Canterbury
learning adviser Georgina
Archibald, 29, is one of five
young people selected to take
part in the Antarctic Heritage
Trust’s Inspiring
Explorers
Expedition.
“This will
certainly be the
greatest outdoor
adventure I’ve
ever undertaken,
Mike
Dawson
Tuesday February 26 2019
so I’m thrilled
to have been
selected,” said
Miss Archibald.
Next month Miss Archibald,
who lives in Woolston, and the
expedition team – including
Olympic slalom canoeist Mike
Dawson – will travel to the
Antarctic Peninsula via South
America on a One Oceans
Expeditions vessel.
Once in Antarctica, they will
have the opportunity to explore
the region in kayaks with help
from guides and Dawson.
“Going to Antarctica is
incredible but being able to
kayak there will be even more
amazing . . . it means we’ll
be able to get up close to the
landscape and wildlife,” said
Miss Archibald.
As she counts down to the
trip, her focus is on training and
ensuring she has the right gear.
“I’ve been enjoying kayaking
around Banks Peninsula over
the summer. However, the warm
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
temperatures have been very
different to the polar conditions
in Antarctica, and one of the
expedition’s biggest challenges
will be managing the extreme
cold while kayaking – ideally
I’ll get my layering techniques
right.”
As a self-described storyteller,
Miss Archibald was drawn to
expedition to Antarctica
the nature of the expedition,
which combines the chance to
experience new landscapes and
wildlife.
On her return, Miss Archibald
will share her story with the
Pasifika community, schools,
tertiary institutions and
community organisations.
“My message will be focused
on what an incredible world we
live in and to make the most of
being able to get out there and
explore it. Adventures, big or
small, local or further afield, are
what opens our eyes and make
us appreciate life.”
Antarctic Heritage Trust
executive director Nigel Watson
will lead the expedition, saying
it will be an unforgettable
experience.
“We have an incredible team
on board this year. We can’t
wait to share this journey as
Antarctica has the power to
change lives.”
South New
Brighton
School gets
garden grant
• By Matt Slaughter
SOUTH NEW Brighton School
has received a $1000 grant to
install a community garden on
its grounds.
The school was one of 30 from
across New Zealand which
received $25,000 between them
from Countdown to go towards
sustainability projects.
The garden space will include
a greenhouse made of plastic
bottles, a shed, an orchard and
a garden bed with fruit and vegetables
selected by the pupils.
Sustain South Brighton community
activator Samantha Fay,
who has two children – Ezra
and Ella – at the school, submitted
the successful funding
application.
Ms Fay said the garden will
also include a 40m strip with
fruit trees planted, owned and
maintained by pupils’ families.
Fruit and vegetables from the
garden will be available for both
pupils and the school’s neighbours
to enjoy.
Both groups will take joint
responsibility for its upkeep, she
said.
Ms Fay said the garden will
aim to promote healthy eating
to pupils and be used for educational
exercises.
It would allow pupils “to grow
something right from the start
and then take it from garden to
table,” she said.
