PHASE II OF
MAINTENANCE FACILITY
PROJECT BREAKS GROUND
On Friday, February 22, the City Council, staff, and I
celebrated the groundbreaking for construction of Phase II of
the Maintenance Facility. The construction
project, which will address inadequate space
needs for operations of the Parks, Trails, and
Recreation and Public Works departments,
includes a new administrative building to
replace the existing administrative building at
10001 East Costilla Avenue. The improvements
will create a more productive and efficient work
environment, and ensure staff continues to
deliver high quality services to residents and
businesses in the future.
These improvements to the Maintenance
Ron Rakowsky
rrakowsky@ Facility were planned in two phases. In 2013,
greenwoodvillage.com Phase I of the Maintenance Facility
303-486-5741 modifications focused on the Emporia Street
parcel. Major areas addressed included a new
fleet maintenance building; construction of a new material
storage building for snow and ice control; expanded material
bins for bulk purchasing of materials such as mulch; and
canopies for Village equipment. In addition, a new Police
Department state-of-the-art crime lab was renovated and
modernized as part of the project to improve space needs for
police officers and staff to meet the 21st century demands of
policing.
Phase II of the Maintenance Facility improvements is
anticipated to be completed in nine months. The project is
fully funded within the Village’s Capital Improvement
Program (CIP). During construction, staff will be relocated
to temporary housing west of the existing Maintenance
Facility to ensure continuing service delivery.
RECOGNIZING VILLAGE HEROES
This month, we honor two young people in our community,
Bodie and Gates Piantanida!
Bodie, 9, and
Gates, 5
accepted a job
during their
Holiday break
to be the dog
walkers for the
Fitzgerald
family. When
the Fitzgeralds
returned from
their trip, it
was payday for the Piantanida brothers. These little guys had
already decided they would not accept money from the
Fitzgerald family. They told Mrs. Fitzgerald that they wanted
to give her a Christmas present by not accepting their
“paycheck.” Mrs. Fitzgerald insisted and paid them anyway.
When Bodie and Gates got home with their paycheck, they
asked their mom, Lisa, if she could take them to the store
because they wanted to spend Mrs. Fitzgerald’s Christmas
present on socks for homeless kids and they did just that!
They purchased 37 pairs of socks for the Greenwood Village
Sock Drive.
Thanks Bodie and Gates for your sincere kindness and
generosity to help others in need! In addition your efforts put
us over the top in the South Metro Sock Challenge (see last
month’s Newsletter).
WATERFOWL DIE-OFFS FOUND
IN VILLAGE AND METRO AREA
A few ducks, and several geese, have recently been reported
dead in the Denver metro area including a few dead geese
found in Greenwood Village.
Colorado Parks and
Wildlife (CPW)
veterinary staff
conducted a
necropsy of several
of the dead geese
and found that the
most significant
factor to their
deaths is a bacterial
infection with
Riemerella anatipestifer, also known as “New Duck Disease.”
This disease affects primarily waterfowl, but it can cause
disease in poultry and other birds. All of the dead birds
examined from the Denver metro die-off have tested negative
for avian influenza viruses and avian paramyxoviruses
(Newcastle disease).
Greenwood Village is home to large populations of resident
Canada Geese year-round. In addition, large migratory flocks
of geese make temporary residence in the area during the
winter months. These large, congregated flocks create ideal
conditions for various illnesses to travel amongst their
populations. If you observe dead waterfowl, please call the
Police Department’s Animal Control Officers at 303-773-
2525 for removal.
It is important that you do not make contact with dead or
sick fowl and do not allow your pets to have interactions. For
more information, please call Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Northeast Region Service Center at 303-291-7227. GV
2018 RESIDENT SURVEY RESULTS MAINTAIN HIGH RATINGS
In October 2018, the Village conducted a Resident Survey to assess the level of citizen satisfaction with a wide variety of specific
outcomes provided by the Village and identify where improvements are needed. The Village last conducted a Citizen Survey in
2014.
The Citizen Survey was mailed to all households of the Village, of which 1,356 surveys were completed and returned, representing
an overall response rate of 22 percent. As part of the Survey’s goal to evaluate the Village’s performance in serving residents
and identify any needed improvements, the Survey asked questions regarding the following outcomes: quality of life; satisfaction
with services, safety, communication, aesthetics, transportation, parks and recreation, and home/mobility internet service.
VILLAGE WORKS TO
REQUEST CITIZENS TO
STOP AT RED LIGHTS
Greenwood Village uses red light
cameras in high-traffic locations to
create safer roadways for motorists and
pedestrians and prevent injuries. The
red light cameras were placed by the
Village in congested areas based on
accident history, complaints of
aggressive driving, traffic signal
violations, and where a police
officer/vehicle could not patrol safely
without blocking traffic or a sidewalk.
In Greenwood Village, there are four
red light cameras at the intersections
of:
• Belleview Avenue and Quebec
Street;
• Orchard Road and Quebec Street;
• Belleview Avenue and Dayton
Street; and
• Arapahoe Road and Yosemite
What you might not know is how
effective the red light cameras are at
changing drivers’ habits and keeping
us all safer:
• 93% of drivers who get one ticket
do not get another one
• 99% have not received more than
• Accidents at the Orchard Road and
Quebec Street intersection have
PG. 10 GV NEWSLETTER | MARCH 2019
GOVERNMENT
Along with the number one goal of safety, the
Village would like to reduce the number of red
light tickets issued. Please be reminded of the
basic rules of the road when it comes to red
lights so you can avoid a ticket, whether from
a police officer or a red light camera.
RULES OF THE ROAD
• All you have to do is STOP when the light
turns red. That’s it! Just STOP.
• Going straight through? STOP when the
light turns red.
• Making a right turn on red? STOP at the
red light, look for pedestrians, and proceed
when it’s clear.
• Turning left against traffic? Wait behind the
crosswalk until oncoming cars have passed, then make
your turn on green. If the light changes while you’re
waiting, STOP at the red light.
Sometimes you’ll notice the red light camera flash even when
you’ve done everything right, don’t worry! Sometimes the
cameras flash to recalibrate themselves. In addition, all red
light camera tickets go through a two-step review before
being mailed, to make sure a violation occurred.
The bottom line is: drive safely, STOP at all red lights, and
you won’t get a ticket! Let’s work together to keep everyone
safe! GV
entire private office? Do you have office expansion needs or
require swing space? Check out Serendipity Labs, an
innovative, upscale coworking office option.
Coworking spaces are essentially shared workspaces, offering
office space for those looking to escape the isolation of a
home office, coffee shop or in need of flexible expansion or
meeting space. Coworking spaces generally offer a culture of
energy and community. From private office space to large
shared work lounges and ideation studios, Serendipity Labs
excels with its hospitality to meet your business needs.
Serendipity Labs was founded with a singular vision: to build
a network of inviting, inspirational members-only
workplaces, combining state-of-the-art workplace design,
technology, and security with the highest service level
swing space. They are committed to consistently deliver a
first-class experience and strive to become a part of the fabric
of the community.
According to Ryan Girardin, General Manager, the Village
was selected due to the high building occupancy and demand
for swing space and office expansion needs. Many Fortune
500 companies are located in the DTC area giving their brand
great exposure. There is superb access to many dining,
transportation, and a variety of walkable amenities for its
members. This location will supplement a downtown location
with a suburban market for individuals not looking to commute.
discerning professionals in mind, who choose when, where
and how they want to work. Serendipity Labs offers startups,
