morning & Molly so pressing with
me to enjoy myself that I believe I
staid in rather too long, as since
the middle of the day I have felt
unreasonably tired”.
Tired? So too were the day trippers
who, some 50 or so years later
boarded their excursions back to
London after a very different kind
of a day than the one that Jane had
enjoyed.
And as they settled back in
their seats they doubtless sang,
especially this song, made popular
in 1909 by the Music Hall singer,
Mark Sheridan.
All together now:
Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside!
I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll along the Prom, Prom,
Prom!
Where the brass bands play, “Tiddely-ompom-pom!”
So just let me be beside the seaside!
I’ll be beside myself with glee
and there’s lots of girls beside,
I should like to be beside, beside the
seaside,
beside the sea!
And having come this far together
you might find it worthwhile to go
on line to hear that song sung by
the man himself:
