The 15-year-old St Margaret’s College student, who plays for Elmwood, has made the New Zealand junior Fed Cup team to compete at the Asia-Oceania qualifying event next month. A top hockey player and swimmer, she has turned her focus to tennis in the past six months, and the rewards have now come. Abby told sports reporter Gordon Findlater: “There was one point during the winter where I was playing more hockey than tennis. It definitely didn’t help at all, so hopefully it will help my tennis this year.” A goal is to play college tennis in the United States. The decision has come six months late because there were not enough Fendalton- Waimairi- Harewood and Halswell-Hornby- Riccarton Helen Broughton Craig Dunnett community board members at a meeting in September to make a formal decision on the improvements to Kahu Rd outside Christchurch Boys’ High School. The original meeting was deemed invalid due to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board only having four members present. A quorum of five members from each board is needed to make a formal decision. Last year, CBHS expressed concerns over the safety of road users and the large number of students who cycle to the school. CBHS has had a significant redevelopment, causing cycle parking facilities to be relocated, which resulted in significantly greater cycle activity on Kahu Rd outside the school. The error meant all affected parties had to repeat their deputation to the boards again. Kahu Rd resident Leigh Webber said he was very disappointed in the process. Residents were concerned the city council staff recommendation to have drop-off and pick-up zones on both sides of Kahu Rd and no stopping on Girvan St would mean a loss of car parks. However, the board members went against the staff recommendation and approved the installation of a drop-off and pick-up zone on the north side of Kahu Rd. It will be in effect between 8.30-9.30am and 2-4pm, Monday to Friday. Outside these times parking will be unrestricted. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the boards decided to “take the middle path” to relieve some issues for the school and help residents. CBHS senior master Craig Dunnett said it would have been nice if the improvements had happened earlier. “Any change is a good change if it is going to make it safer for the school users and the community users on the road there,” he said. He said the school would have preferred the city council staff recommendation but understood residents were concerned about losing car parks. Mr Dunnett said the area outside the school was “an accident waiting to happen.” Mr Webber said the board made an acceptable decision, but it is the school’s responsibility to ensure its students’ safety. “CBHS are trying to transfer all the costs and trouble over to the public when the answer lies within the school itself,” Mr Webber said. Contractors will be working until next month to excavate the old footpaths, install new ones and repair berms. They will be on site between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
