10. The doom which the Reformers awarded to<br />

others for false dogmas, they accepted for<br />

themselves, should they teach wh<strong>at</strong> was<br />

contrary to the faith. "When I read Paul's<br />

st<strong>at</strong>ement," says Farel, writing to Calvin, "th<strong>at</strong><br />

he did not refuse to suffer de<strong>at</strong>h if he had in<br />

any way deserved it, I saw clearly th<strong>at</strong> I must<br />

be prepared to suffer de<strong>at</strong>h if I should teach<br />

anything contrary to the doctrine <strong>of</strong> piety. And<br />

If we condemn the Reformers for their<br />

intolerance, we surely cannot but admire their<br />
