side there is not a word <strong>of</strong> yielding; on the<br />

other not a word <strong>of</strong> consol<strong>at</strong>ion. It does not<br />

seem to have occurred to Servetus, to his credit<br />

be it said, to save himself by a false<br />

retract<strong>at</strong>ion; nor does Farel believe it possible<br />

to utter one word <strong>of</strong> comfort or hope till<br />

Servetus has been brought to renounce those<br />

doctrines which he held to be f<strong>at</strong>al. This<br />

imparts to the one side the air <strong>of</strong> obstinacy, to<br />

the other the aspect <strong>of</strong> severity. The<br />

earnestness <strong>of</strong> the sixteenth century is, we<br />

believe, the key to a scene th<strong>at</strong> appears to us<br />

extraordinary.<br />

14. On the level or summit <strong>of</strong> Champel, says<br />

Rilliet, <strong>and</strong> not <strong>at</strong> the spot called Champ du<br />

Bourreau, should be placed the the<strong>at</strong>er <strong>of</strong><br />

short, he saw in the Incarn<strong>at</strong>ion, not "God in<br />
