The CBHS under-18 coxed eight won their final major hit out on Lake Karapiro in commanding fashion ahead of the Maadi regatta, which starts on Monday. A tail wind helped them finish in a blistering time of 5min 51.77sec, more than 14sec ahead of defending Maadi Cup champions Christ’s College in second. In terms of national sporting achievements, there’s not much CBHS hasn’t done. However, they are yet to win the Maadi Cup. “We’re all aware of that. They got close in 1999 . . . we’re lucky this year that we have a big group of year 13s. We haven’t necessarily said this is our target, but if they go fast in something then we’ll make it a target,” said CBHS rowing coach Logan Keys. Now in his eighth year with the programme, Keys said the group of 61 rowers is the largest the school has had in his time. “They got a little bit of a taste CONTENDERS: The CBHS and Rangi Ruru (top right) coxed eight crews will head to Maadi Cup on a high after the South Island secondary school championships . PHOTOS: STEVE MCARTHUR of it last year and they’ve all hung around,” said Keys. “We started with two eights. We had 16 guys going for it and have spent all year trying to whittle it down. We haven’t quite got there yet, but it’s getting pretty close . . . in previous years, we might only have had eight guys.” The eight of Scott Shackleton, Tom Fraser, Cameron Long, Ethan Alderlieste, Cameron Henderson, Angus Templeton, James Glover, Ben Brown and Timothy Heritage (cox) won one of eight gold medals for CBHS – making them the most successful boys’ school at the South Island regatta. CBHS also won the boys under-18 coxed four which will have them in contention for the Springbok Shield – contested SPORT at the Maadi regatta – they narrowly missed out on last year. Rangi Ruru was the top girls’ school with four gold, six silver and three bronze medals. “The crews can be pleased with their achievements this weekend and should pat themselves on the back for their efforts. The coaches, parents and management are in awe of them,” said Rangi Ruru rowing manager Ella Vink. Meanwhile, St Margaret’s will go into the Maadi regatta as the South Island favourites in the Jubilee Cup after winning the girls under-18 coxed eight at the weekend.
