Turnaround concept reduces downtimes
High-efficiency turbocompressor
The Bilfinger Turnaround Concept
(BTC) consists of nine
modules covering various aspects
such as resource management,
workplace safety, and materials
management. These theory-heavy
modules are supplemented
by a comprehensive
handbook that defines all the
work steps involved in detail,
along with their respective interdependencies.
Depending on
the initial situation at hand, the
required workflows pre-defined
as templates in the handbook
can be individually adjusted to
the specific dictates of the prevailing
conditions. This produces
a complete operational
flow chart for all the various
simultaneous and sequential
work steps, including their cyclical
timing. This in turn provides
the wherewithal for the
exceptionally precise turnaround
management, particularly
when it comes to minimising
project risks and precalculating
costs with maximum accuracy.
A further focal point of the BTC
is on readying and compiling all
the parts and components
required for the maintenance of
a given structural element. In
this process (also known as kitting),
all the small parts to be
replaced are pre-sorted and
packed in the correct quantities
for each work step.
The progress of a turnaround
project can be tracked using a
mobile app linked up to a central
web application.
Sulzer's HSR line of high-speed
turbocompressors is designed
for the production of oil-free
pressurised air in applications
where contamination of the air
must be avoided. The HSR utilises
high-performance turbo
and magnetic bearing technology
that maximises the efficiency
and minimises the need for
maintenance.
A key benefit is that the HSR
contains no oil at all. This means
100 % safe compressed air for
processes where no contamination
is allowed, for example
in the production of fibrous
materials or pharmaceuticals.
A key technological choice is
the use of active magnetic bearings
that bring the benefit of no
mechanical friction and no
mechanical wear. Together with
Picture: Sulzer
the almost total absence of vibration,
this grants the product
a long lifetime. The HSR is
cooled by water. The advantage
is that both the heat generated
by the compression and driverelated
losses can be recovered
as usable energy. Water cooling
also ensures optimal performance
and generally extends the
lifetime of the components.
Sensors for single-use applications
Non-seal centrifugal canned motor pumps
Picture: Hamilton
Hamilton offers a complete solution
for cell culture and fermentation.
The single-use pH
sensor Oneferm and a disposable
sensor for optical dissolved
oxygen measurement are the
latest developments. The sensors
are implemented into bags and
reactors by the manufacturers of
the single-use equipment and
delivered gamma-sterilised afterwards.
This means a minimum of
preparation time as well as no
time consuming cleaning validations
for the users. Oneferm
pH combines at the same time
the precision and minimal drift
of a glass pH sensor with the
quick use of an optical pH sensor
without increasing the contamination
risk. The single-use sensors
are available as an analogue
and an Arc version. Along the
same line, Hamilton released an
Arcair Software version, which
allows the user to access all processes
fast and easy with the app.
Reading the barcodes printed on
the pH buffers and conductivity
standards labels, and documenting
all settings and changes, is
one of the innovations of the
new ArcAir software.
To even better meet the requirements
of the European market,
the reliable Nikkiso non-seal
centrifugal canned motor
pumps are available since January
2019 also in accordance
with DIN EN ISO 2858. As the
first step, four sizes, the 25-160,
32–125, 40-200 and 50-200,
had been introduced. Another
four models followed in February
of 2019, while a total of 12
pump sizes should be available
by the end of the 3rd quarter of
2019.
The compact and low-vibration
Nikkiso centrifugal canned
motor pumps are used mainly
for the transfer and circulation
tasks of easily flammable, explosive
or toxic fluids in the
