4 Tuesday March 26 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi PEGASUS POST News Surfers scoop Duke trophies; Coberger YOUNG NORTH Wai boardriders Myka Black and Ava Henderson picked up three titles each at the Ray White Duke Festival of Surfing on New Brighton Beach, on March 15 to 17. Black, 15, made a return to the competitive arena in commanding fashion, walking home with titles in the under 20, 18 and 16 boys division titles. He was the form surfer throughout the weekend as he picked off all the best waves and capitalised on every small section that presented itself. Henderson, 13, was equally as dominant winning the girls titles in the under 20, 18 and 16 divisions. She is currently ranked No 1 in New Zealand in her age group and continued the form which saw her win the Billabong Grom Series recently. One of the most impressive displays of the weekend came from 13-year-old Amelie Wink when she won the women’s stand up paddleboard division with a score of 13.3. She pipped New Zealand representative Lucy Te Moananui who finished second with 8.5. Mt Pleasant surfer Alan Te Moananui claimed his first national victory in the men’s stand up paddleboard division. He secured the win in the late stages of the final after pipping Shayne Baxter 11.5 to 10.9 points. Meanwhile, 1992 Olympic skiing silver medallist Annelise Coberger – who was competing in her first ever competitive surfing event – won both the over 40 women’s division and the women’s logger division. Auckland-based couple Paul Culpan and Sasha Brownlie claimed the premier men’s and women’s longboard divisions and together surged to the top of the national rankings. Culpan pipped defending champion Luke O’Neill and Hugh Ritchie – both from Christchurch – who finished on 10.6 points each, O’Neill was SNOW AND SURF: Winter Olympic silver medallist Annelise Coberger won the women’s logger division and over 40 women’s division. given the runner-up finish on a countback. Brownlie was pushed for the title by Estella Hungerford in the final, Hungerford finishing runner up on 8.10 points. The surf remained around the 0.5m for the final day of the event with light winds doing their best to keep conditions contestable under grey skies. Twenty finals were contested throughout the day across longboard, stand up paddleboard and junior divisions. The Duke Festival of Surfing featured over $15,000 in prizes making it one of the richest events on the New Zealand surfing circuit. However, city council head of recreation, sports and events Nigel Cox said the $1 million budgeted for the toilet and changing room block had been an estimate. The building would have four changing rooms with showers and toilets, a referees’ changing room, storage, public toilets, provision of services and landscaping including paving, vegetation, seating, a drinking fountain and cycle stands. It is part of the $12 million draft QE II Park Master Plan. The first phase of the plan includes a new playground featuring a sandpit with a digger and buried “fossils,” a basket swing, wooden horses and a tube slide. In a nod to the 1974 Commonwealth Games held at QE II, two running tracks have been recommended for the area, along with a four square court and podium. Upgraded fitness stations are also in the draft plan, along with a disc golf course and adventure nature trail. It was finalised by the hearings panel and will be approved by the city council before planning begins in July. A drop-in session is being held at the Scottish Society Hall, 136 Caledonian Rd from 3.30-5.30pm for residents to ask questions about upgrade to roads through St Albans, Edgeware and Mairehau proposed in the draft Downstream Effects Management Plan. The city council is currently seeking feedback on the plan. There will be another drop-in session on April 4 from 5-7pm at the St Albans School hall at 17 Sheppard Pl.
