Sockburn fun day draws crowd
A COMMUNITY Fun Day in
Sockburn has been deemed a
success after about 600 people
turned out.
The event, hosted by the
Westside Community Trust, was
held at Sockburn Park.
Organiser Julie Young said the
slippery slide was a highlight
along with the candyfloss which
was provided by the Riccarton
Waimairi Lions Club.
Three-legged, sack, and egg
and spoon races were held, and
free sausages, ice cream and
popcorn was provided.
The trust promoted its children’s
programmes, ICONZ
and IFG, and invited other organisations
to have stands so the
community can be aware of the
options available to them.
This included parents group
Young 1’s and Shuffle Bumz, the
Church Corner Toy Library, Garmonsway
School of Dance, Girl
Guides, Scouts, Upper Riccarton
Community and School Library
and the Keen Bean Knitting
Group which meets there.
Cornerstone Church, Activate
Church and Activate Youth also
had stands.
Entertainment was provided
by Garmonsway School
of Dance, A Culture Rising, and
Marty Schieb from the Outreach
And Church Ministry. Children
also won prizes as Mr Schieb did

thanked the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
and the Rata Foundation for the
funding and the many businesses
which helped sponsor the event.
The fun day also recognised
the 100-year anniversary of the
Upper Riccarton War Memorial
Library at Church Corner.
Opened on March 19, 1919, the
library was the first of seven war
memorials to be built in New
Zealand.
The trust also had a whiteboard
so people could write
down their ideas about what they
would like to see improved at
Sockburn Park.
This information will be given
to the city council so that progress
can be made to improve the
park and help turn it into a hub
for the community.
Former recipient promotes
Community Service Awards
A HALSWELL Cubs leader
is helping to promote the this
year’s Community Service
Awards after she was recognised
with one last year.
Jo Burt, 50, who also works
with young adults with special
needs, has been involved with
the Scout movement for nearly
35 years. Now she
is helping with the
city council awards
which are open for
nominations.
Mrs Burt said she
also loves meeting
other recipients
and learning about
their impressive
achievements.
However, she points
out that “you do not do things
for awards, you do it because
you want to.”
“My dad was a group leader
at Scouts. I went to Brownies,
Guides, back to Brownies as
a junior leader, and then into
Cubs as a leader,” Mrs Burt said.
She has volunteered with the
St Nicholas Scout Group for 18
years and the Halswell Scout
Group for a further 15 years.
“And I will continue to be
involved for as long as I can,”
she said.
“The youngsters learn so

much – working as a team,
knotting, compass, cooking,
camping, and a lot of badge
work achievements.
“Moving through the
sections, they can achieve chief
scout, queen scout and Duke of
Edinburgh awards, which can
help when applying for jobs.”
Mrs Burt also
organises the annual
group camp – which
attracts more than 120
youngsters, leaders and
parents – and at least
two fundraisers each
year.
She acts as mentor
to many, runs training
sessions and dedicates
each Friday to all her
extra administration work.
Mrs Burt aims to lay the
foundations for young people
who will contribute to their
area and, eventually, the wider
community.
She believes volunteering
changes everyone for the better.
