Weekend of hard yards for councillor
• By Julia Evans
GLENN LIVINGSTONE says
he’s just an average guy.
But on March 23 the Burwood
Ward city councillor cycled
53km in Le Race from Cathedral
Square to Little River and followed
it up with a 14km fun run
in the City2Surf the next day..
It was the first time Cr Livingstone
had done both events in
succession and he said he treated
it like a “mini coast to coast.”
His only goal was to get over the
finish line of both as he did the
mountain run of the Coast to Coast
and has since had a few injuries.
At 55, Cr Livingstone said he
A SPECIAL celebration has
been held at the Wainoni
Avonside Community
Services Trust to mark its
patron’s birthday.
The trust’s patron Margaret
Austin turned 86 yesterday
and a party was held for her
birthday last week.
Its co-ordinator Betty
Chapman said it was a very
special day for a very special
lady.
She said as Mrs Austin loves
local government, culture
START LINE: Glenn Livingstone cycled 53km from Cathedral
Square to Little River in Le Race on March 23 before he ran
14km in the City2Surf the next day.
fell into doing endurance sports
“quite by accident.”
“Always been into a few events
but since the quakes, it’s kept me
in tact,” Cr Livingstone said.
and arts the trust had a performance
from the Shoreline
Ensemble Choir and singer
Janice Gray.
City councillor Jimmy
Chen also attended to
help her celebrate her birthday.
Mrs Chapman said Mrs
Austin is not only a patron in
name for the trust, she is there
almost every week and is very
supportive.
“Last week she had a previous
appointment but she
changed her plans to come
over to see all the folk as she
envisaged that they would
be pretty unsettled after the
shootings.
“She was right, everyone
really appreciated seeing her
and having a big hug,” Mrs
Chapman said.
Mrs Chapman said Mrs
Austin then assisted in the
memorial service organised
by the trust to remember
those who lost their lives in
the recent terror attacks.
“I’m doing faster times than I
used to when I was younger. The
only limits are in your mind.”
He said he totally believes in a
link between physical and mental
health, but finding the time to
train is a challenge.
“Trying to balance with family.
All these things are a balancing
act whether its council, training
and family,” Cr Livingstone said.
Since the terror attack, he said
he has been “totally dislocated”
like most people around the city.
“After Friday two weeks ago,
I couldn’t do the lawns. But in
normal times dealing with the
pressure, it’s good to go for a
run,” he said.
Next on his list will be the
Christchurch marathon or half.
“I’ll need to see what I can fit
in. Planning on the whole Coast
to Coast in February.”
Parklands
Library
reopens
PARKLANDS LIBRARY has
reopened ahead of schedule after
a major upgrade and earthquake
repairs.
The library, which shut in
November, was initially scheduled
to reopen in April. However, the
overall work was not as extensive
as expected, resulting in the
reopening on Friday.
The library cafe is expected to
reopen in a few months, with the
cafe operation still open for tender.
City council head of libraries and
information Carolyn Robertson
said the revamped Parklands
Library is a wonderful “fit” for the
local community, offering a more
open space.
“Local connections are more
important than ever and our updated
library is an integral element
of the Parklands community,” Ms
Robertson said.
Parklands Library has been
strengthened and refurbished, with
spaces reworked to better meet
community needs. The heating
and ventilation system has been replaced,
while energy-efficient LED
fittings have been installed. Floor
coverings have been replaced,
computer stations moved and all
areas have undergone a makeover.
