30 | April 4, 2019 | The Northbrook tower life & arts northbrooktower.com High-quality, fresh food a recipe for success at Adam’s Kabob Megan Bernard Contributing Editor Since Jamal Amr’s son was the first person to step into what would become his new restaurant in 2014, he knew it was going to be a lucky spot. “He is the love of my life,” Amr said about his son, Adam, who is now 7 years old. Therefore, it felt only right to name the restaurant Adam’s Kabob after his beloved little guy. Luckily for Amr, the namesake spot hit the ground running almost four years ago at 1410 Waukegan Road in Glenview, and he’s never looked back since. Amr brought his experience from his 11 years at Pita Inn in Skokie and a restaurant he previously owned in Buffalo Grove called Firewood Kabob. His expertise in the kitchen paired with his knowledge of the restaurant industry earned him a successful start in Glenview — something Amr says isn’t always common in the first months of operating a new business. “I found this store and it was perfect,” he added. “After we built everything, the first day we opened we kicked butt. I was so busy the first day and we still are today.” Adam’s Kabob 1410 Waukegan Road, Glenview (224) 432-5474 www.adamskabob.com 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday Noon-8 p.m. Sunday Adam’s Kabob has several tables for customers to dine-in and serves Mediterranean dishes with three different types of bases, including chicken, kefta (beef) and shawarma. “I take pride in my quality,” Amr said of the menu. “I created the menu and it’s very simple. It doesn’t have a lot of items. [Mediterranean] food is one of the most expensive types of food in the market because of all the meat. I made the menu small so my food is profitable and at the same time simple; it’s good for the community and the price range is nice.” Everything on the menu is homemade from the tahini sauce and falafel to the hummus and baklava. Each dish is also made daily, Amr added. To get the most bang for your buck, the restaurant offers healthy bowls for $7.99 every day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The bowls include your choice of kefta, The chicken shawarma platter ($11.99) is served with rice, hummus, salad, pita and soup. We started with a plate of chicken shawarma, which had thin slices of marinated chicken on a bed of rice and a side salad. Amr said the shawarma — my personal favorite — sits in the marinade for two days leading up to its slowly revolving rotisserie. Our next dish, the kefta kabob, was made with firegrilled ground beef, which was lightly seasoned with minced onion and parsley. Paired with the salad and rice, it makes for a filling lunch or dinner. A customer favorite, falafel, quickly became ours too. The crispy brown croquette made from fresh chickpeas blended with herbs was so flavorful dipped in the tahini and garlic sauce. We also used fresh pita to sandwich the falafel, sauces and salad. Another dish Amr made us was the chicken tender salad — which isn’t what you’re thinking. The salad was made with marinated Mediterranean chicken breasts over fresh lettuce with gluten-free feta cubes. We also sampled a side of Jerusalem fries made from thinly sliced fried potato wedges heavily seasoned with Mediterranean herbs. To finish off the meal, we enjoyed a cup of mint tea and a large wedge of homemade baklava, which cannot be passed up when you visit the establishment. Looking forward, Amr said he’s hoping to open a second Adam’s Kabob location in downtown Chicago. He is currently negotiating a space where he plans to serve breakfast and lunch.
