FIVE THEMED TRANSATLANTIC CROSSINGS WORTH CONSIDERING
WRITTEN BY BROOKE PERRY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CUNARD LINE
No doubt about it, a
transatlantic voyage
aboard the world’s most
famous ocean liner is a
bucket list adventure. But
imagine setting sail with
a guest list that includes some of the
world’s most accomplished artists,
authors and actors. In 2019, Queen
Mary 2 continues her long tradition
of culturally enriching themed
crossings with an array of inspiring
invited guests aboard five unique
voyages.
YOU LOVE WWII HISTORY — Hear the
first-hand accounts of D-Day and the
Battle of Normandy as told by six
WWII veterans on a themed voyage
in partnership with The Greatest
Generations Foundation. The heroes,
en route to participate in a series of
commemorative events marking the
75th anniversary of D-Day, will be
on hand for lectures, Q&A sessions
and a chance to learn more about the
crucial role Cunard played in WWII.
Departing New York City, May 24
YOU LOVE FASHION — High fashion
meets the high seas during
Transatlantic Fashion Week. Set
sail with an A-list group of fashion
industry insiders, including royal
milliner Stephen Jones OBE, shoe
designer Stuart Weitzman, and iconic
American model Pat Cleveland, for
this fourth annual voyage featuring
runway shows, styling workshops,
Q&A sessions, and interactive
talks led by fashion historian Colin
McDowell MBE. Departing New York
City, July 28
YOU LOVE THE SYMPHONY — Join
acclaimed British conductor
Anthony Inglis, music director
of London’s National Symphony
Orchestra, for a special sailing
featuring opportunities to watch
the National Symphony Orchestra
prep for performances in the ship’s
Royal Court Theatre, watch open
rehearsals, and talk to members
of the orchestra. Inglis will also
participate in a Q&A session with
passengers. Departing New York City,
Sept. 15
YOU LOVE THE COSMOS — Former
NASA astronauts and other
distinguished space explorers
gather for World Space Week at sea
featuring talks, Q&A sessions, spacethemed
experiences in the ship’s
Art Deco-embellished planetarium,
and plenty of stargazing. It’s worth
noting that Queen Mary 2 is home to
the world’s only planetarium at sea.
Departing Southampton, Sept. 26
YOU LOVE LITERATURE — British
novelists Louis de Bernières and
novelist Sebastian Faulks, and
Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. novelist
Elizabeth Strout, will be joined by
The Sunday Times’ Literary Editor
Andrew Holgate for Cunard’s first
Literature Festival at Sea. Created in
partnership with the distinguished
Cheltenham Literature Festival,
this event will feature seminars,
Q&A sessions, and a chance to talk
with these award-winning novelists.
Departing New York City, Nov. 10
The Illuminations was the
first planetarium at sea.
Smooth Sailing
WHEN TO GO | Queen Mary 2 offers
Transatlantic Crossings from mid-
April to mid-December. Peak season
sailings in July and August are the
most expensive and the most popular.
CHOOSING A CABIN | Queen Mary 2
offers three cabin categories and
the one you choose can dictate your
experience. Think of Queens Grill as
first class, Princess Grill as business
class, and Britannia as coach.
FARES | Fares vary depending on
cabin category, demand and season,
from $999 to $1,549 per person in a
Britannia Inside cabin to $5,519 to
$6,799 in a Queens Suite (higher for a
butler-staffed Penthouse, Royal Suite
or Grand Duplex).
PORTS OF DEPARTURE | With
the exception of a handful of
extended voyages, Queen Mary 2
offers Eastbound and Westbound
crossings between New York City
and Southampton. Pro tip: Choose a
Westbound crossing and experience
an awe-inspiring early morning
arrival into New York Harbor,
complete with a sail past the
Statue of Liberty.
