Queen-inspired musical sure to rock you
We Will Rock You
Written by Ben Elton and
music by Queen
TURNING THE songs from
one of the biggest rock bands
of all time into a successful live
musical is an ambitious task.
But the city is blessed with
world-class performers,
musicians and creatives, who
manage to bring an impressive
rendition of a popular musical
celebrating English rock-band
Queen to the stage.
Showbiz Christchurch’s
production of We Will Rock You
is not your typical musical – it
is a slick, spirited, infectiously
energetic rock concert that will
likely draw large crowds.
With the city recovering
from the recent terror attacks,
the uplifting show brings joy,
laughter and unity, and an
escape, using Queen’s timeless
hits.
While the storyline of the
show is a little cliched, the talent,
highlighted in the cleverly
choreographed musical numbers,
makes up for that.
Set 300 years into the future
on a planet renamed iPlanet,
mainstream commercial
conformity rules, people are
You.
brain-washed with the same
opinions, and rock music is
unknown.
In rebellion, the Bohemians
embark on a search to find the
unlimited power of freedom that
is rock music.
Although I wasn’t in love with
the storyline, the witty references
to the song lyrics by other artists
such as Britney Spears, Taylor
Swift and Baha Men, and sexual
innuendo managed to make me
crack a few chuckles.
The weight of the show is
largely carried by powerhouses
Jane Leonard and Caleb
Jago-Ward, who play the lead
roles of outcasts Galileo and
Scaramouche, they are both
gifted, their robust vocals nearly
blew the roof off.
band as highly regarded as
Queen, the casting of the lead
roles is vital. Fortunately, in this
case, Leonard and Jago-Ward are
perfect.
Jago-Ward singing I Want
To Break Free and Leonard
singing Somebody To Love at
the beginning of the show sets
the scene for a feisty production
promising fireworks aplenty.
Naomi Ferguson absolutely
rocks the bad-girl persona as
Killer Queen – all eyes were
on her. Particularly on two of
my favourites Killer Queen and
Another One Bites The Dust.
But it was not just the vivacious
and charismatic cast that makes
this production so successful –
the musicianship by the band
is dazzling and I love how the
audience get to see them rock out
on the stage for a change.
The lighting also cannot go
unmentioned as it is one of the
largest scale lighting productions
Showbiz has ever carried out. I
had to shut my eyes at times, as
it is so intense. But it enhances
the rock concert feel, making me
want to get up and have a good
rage.
If you love Queen, like I do,
then going along to this show is a
no-brainer.
Showbiz has done it again,
and deserves to be applauded for
its hard work which makes this
show such a success.
