Expressing deep sadness over the untimely death of Miss Adaobi Ojide in the hands of the Nigeria police force, which he described <strong>as</strong> unfortunate, Chief Ogbonna also promised the family that Ohanaeze will be fully involved in her burial. He said that Ohanaeze, under his watch, will not allow the matter of Adaobi Jessica Ojide to be swept under the carpet by the authorities. Third Mainland Bridge safe — FG By Ol<strong>as</strong>unkanmi Akoni L AGOS—THE Ministry of Works and Housing, yesterday, <strong>as</strong>sured Nigerians that the structural integrity of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is safe and intact for public use. The clarification became necessary following a trending story, weekend, on social media showing a faulty and weak expansion joint on the bridge with warning to motorists to avoid the bridge due to imminent collapse. Mr. Hakeem Bello, Special Adviser, Communications, to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, in a statement, allayed fears of citizens plying the bridge, saying there is no cause for alarm. The statement read: “The general Public is hereby informed that the expansion joint shown in a Facebook video clip, is one of those slated for change during repairs to the Third Mainland Bridge which will commence soon. It is still functioning and our engineers and consultants have advised that it does not pose any structural danger to the bridge and it is safe to use. “Commuters and Lagos residents will recall that the Third Mainland Bridge w<strong>as</strong> shut down for a three-day Investigative Maintenance in August 2018. Tests done on the expansion joints then - called static and dynamic load tests - were to check functionality. Nkanga, who spoke at the weekend, described Onnoghen’s trial and conviction <strong>as</strong> not surprising, adding that the government had started to adopt a systematic way to muscle the judiciary. He said with the recent developments, the common man who w<strong>as</strong> not sure of getting justice in the courts would have no option than to resort to self-help. He said: “If people are so intimidated that they cannot tell the truth and get justice in the court which is the l<strong>as</strong>t hope of the common man when it happens like this, the immediate thing that would happen is that we will see more people killing people on the streets. “When people fail to react when things happen we should be ready to accept the consequences. We should react to issues before the consequences. “Actually, it is not Onnoghen that is the issue here. Of course, coming from the Niger Delta, for us it is a tragedy. It is not completely new and not surprising. Nigerians who believe they are safe today when there is a tragedy should remember that when the consequence comes it would consume everybody. Nkanga stated that the president had refused to confirm him, <strong>as</strong> such the leaders of the region had to canv<strong>as</strong>s for his confirmation before he w<strong>as</strong> confirmed by Osibanjo, then <strong>as</strong> acting president. An eye witness told Vanguard that the shooting occurred at Iyana Coker area of Ifo, a market community on the Lagos- Abeokuta Expressway. The young man, in his 30s, identified simply <strong>as</strong> Akeem, w<strong>as</strong> reportedly killed while some sustained injury. The officers were said to be of the Zonal Intervention Squad of Zone 2 Police Command. Irate residents have taken to the streets to express anger about the killing. Police confirm incident spread thunderstorm activities over the entire region <strong>as</strong> the day progresses. The agency predicted that northern states would experience sunny morning with day and night temperatures of 35 to 42 and 21 to 30 degrees Celsius. It further predicted partly cloudy to sunny conditions with prospects of thundery activities over Maiduguri and thunderstorms over Yola and Gombe axis later in the day. Lottery regulatory commission goes tough on illegal online betting operators By Ol<strong>as</strong>unkanmi Akoni N ATIONAL LOTTERY Regulatory Commission h<strong>as</strong> said it would continue to clamp down on illegal lottery, gaming operators who hide under state license to carry out online operations to defraud and manipulate the public. The Director General, National Lottery Regulatory Commission, Lanre Gbajabiamila, who stated this warned that such operators run the risk of complete shutdown should they fail to comply with the law governing lotteries and gaming. According to Gbajabiamila, through Magnus Ekechukwu, Assistant Director, Public Affairs, about six online betting operators were affected in the recent enforcement by the commission. He said the commission w<strong>as</strong> not interested in penalising them for now, so long <strong>as</strong> they are ready to regularise their operations with the agency. Gbajabiamila further stated that the Lottery Commission would continue to work with state lottery regulators to sanitize the industry and protect the general public, in line with the mandate of the commission. According to NiMet, southern states will experience cloudy morning with chances of rainfall activities over Lagos and Abeokuta axis. “Widespread thunderstorm activities are anticipated over the entire region in the afternoon and evening with day and night temperatures of 32 to 35 and 23 to 26 degrees Celsius. “The influx of moisture into the country is consistent and so there are chances of thunderstorm activities in the country within the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted.
