ARMED POLICE will be at the 

New Brighton Anzac Day service 

on Thursday. 

Sergeant Jim Currie said police 

would be armed because of 

increased public safety concerns 

after the March 

15 mosque 

shootings, which 

left 50 people 

dead. 

“There’s still 

perceived threat 

in that high-risk 

area after the attack. 

That’s why 

Jim Currie 

there’s a need for firearms, unfortunately,” 

said Sergeant Currie. 

More than 500 people usually 

attend the New Brighton 

service at the cenotaph on Marine 

Pde. 

The Burwood Anzac Day service 

has been cancelled, but the 

Aranui one will go ahead. There 

will be no police presence.

THE NEW Brighton Museum has a great 

tribute to local men who fought in World 

War 1 and 2 (see page 1). 

The museum has three books on display 

for people to look over which contains a 

treasure trove of information. 

Aptly named The New Brighton Boys, World War 1 is the 

main focus, but there is also detail on those who fought in campaigns 

during World War 2. 

No doubt there will be much discussion over the faces in the 

books and the resemblance to their descendants today. 

The exhibition has been created by museum volunteers Fay 

Lal and Margaret Uhrbom, while the information in the books 

was researched by museum treasurer Margaret Kelso.

Brighton’s $4.3 million upgrade 


A $4.3 million plan to improve 

Marine Pde and parts of New 

Brighton Mall will go ahead. 

After considering 174 submissions, 

the Coastal-Burwood 

Community Board approved an 

approach, which would improve 

the road and the mall. 

This will involve 

footpaths 

being widened 

to make way for 

outdoor dining 

areas, bus 

stops moving, 

the speed limit

decreasing 

to 30km/h 

between Beresford 

and Hawke Sts and the 

installation of new artwork and 

native plants. 

Work will begin in September 

and the city council aims to have 

the project completed by December. 

At the latest, the developments 

will be finished before 

the Coast to Coast and opening 

of the hot pools scheduled for 

March next year. 

New Brighton Business and 

Landowners Association chairwoman 

Rebecca Tavete said 

the project would improve New 

Brighton’s overall appeal. 

“I think that it will encourage 

people to walk Marine Pde, to 

use Marine Pde, rather than 

it just being a drive by area, 

because it’s currently mostly 

that. It’s not really encouraging 

anyone to stop and enjoy that 

zone.” 

The project will not include 

the much sought after extension 

of Oram Ave from New Brighton 

Mall to Hawke St, because 

that project is being overseen by 

Development Christchurch. 

However, Mrs Tavete said 

she hoped the completion of 

the Marine Pde improvements 

would be followed closely by this 

and other significant projects in 

the area. 

“You’ve got to move in phases 

to achieve a bigger development. 

If we consider this as phase one 

and then the pools coming life, 

then the natural progression is 

that I’m sure before the pools are 

actually opened, the Oram Ave 

extension will be ticked off.” 

Mrs Tavete said she had some 

concerns about the safety of 

pedestrians once the project was 

completed, but there was still

these and other concerns into 

consideration. Coastal Ward 

city councillor David East said

the most positive impact on New

“It’s one that offers a bit 

of flexibility . . . Marine Pde 

was the prime focus and staff 

have suggested that there is a 

possibility of being able to do 

a small amount of work in the 

mall.”

would be nice, but we just don’t

NEW BRIGHTON Museum 

volunteers Fay Lal and Margaret 

Uhrbom have created an 

exhibition called The New 

Brighton Boys, which includes 

the faces and stories of 62 World 

War 1 and 2 soldiers with strong 

links to the area. 

These are told in three books, 

which are available for visitors to 

look at. 

The information within the 

books was researched by New 

Brighton Museum treasurer 

Margaret Kelso, 76, who has 

lived in New Brighton almost all 

of her life. 

Mrs Kelso said the books 

included details on the family 

histories of New Brighton 

soldiers, where they fought, if 

they returned home and for 

those who died, where they are 

buried. 

She said she recognised a few 

of their family names and her 

grandparents grew up in New 

Brighton and would have known 

some of the men featured in the 

books. 

The exhibition largely features 

men from the area who fought 

in World War 1. 

“It’s mostly World War 1, but 

there’s a few from World War 2 

as well,” Mrs Kelso said. 

Her interest came from being 

involved in the New Brighton 

community for many years. 

“The district is really 

important to me,” she said. 

“They’re very notable people,

soldiers in the books had similar 

lifestyles to those living in 

the area today day, with many 

belonging to the local surf

Brighton’s World War 1 soldiers 

Mrs Lal said the 

information Mrs Kelso had 

collected about the soldiers 

needed to be shared with the 

community. 

“We wanted to present these 

books in a meaningful way,” she 

said. 

“We had this material available 

to us, so why not get it out there 

and present it to the people that 

come into the museum.” 

Mrs Uhrbom said there were 

still families in the area who are 

connected to some of the men 

from the exhibition who fought in 

World War 1. 

She said The New Brighton Boys 

display would play an 

important role in ensuring these 

links were not forgotten over 

time. 

“Obviously, they’re dead 

and buried and gone and their 

direct families in most cases are 

dead and gone as well, but their 

offspring are here . . . old families 

are still in New Brighton and 

it’s respectful,” Mrs Uhrbom 

said. 

Ronald Barrett: Attended Central New 

Brighton School before he fought in 

Gallipoli and France. He was killed 

at Flers in Somme on September 

16, 1916. He is remembered on the 

Caterpillar Valley New Zealand 

Memorial in Longueval, France. 

Norman Packham: Lived on Pages 

Rd and went to Central New Brighton 

School. He fought in Étaples, France, 

was killed on August 26, 1918 and was 

buried in Bagneux British Cemetery 

in Somme, France. His name is on the 

Burwood War Memorial. 

Leslie Hulbert: Fought at Gallipoli and 

the Somme. He was killed on October 

21, 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. 

He was buried in Dartmoor Cemetery 

at Bécordel-Bécourt, France. He is 

remembered on a family grave in 

Linwood. 

John Leversedge: Attended Central 

New Brighton School. He fought in 

Egypt and Gallipoli and returned to 

New Zealand in 1916 after contracting 

enteritis. He died in Christchurch on 

November 24, 1918 and was buried at 

Papanui Anglican Church Cemetery.

Bill Wakefield: Fought in World War 

2 and lived in New Brighton. He was 

killed in action at El Alamein in Egypt 

on July 11, 1942. 

Geoffrey Bargrove: Attended New 

Brighton District School and was a 

cadet on the S.S. Aparima. The ship 

was sunk by a German U-boat near 

the Isle of Wight on 19 November, 

1917. He is remembered at the Tower 

Hill Memorial for marine casualties. 

William Bellamy: Lived on Lonsdale 

St and attended Central New Brighton 

School. He was reported missing in 

action in the Somme in France on 

July 19, 1916. His name is on the Cite 

Bonjean New Zealand Memorial in 

Armentières, Nord, France. 

Francis Richards: His parents lived 

on Seaview Rd. He was part of the 

Gallipoli landings and was shot and 

killed on May 9, 1915. He was buried in 

Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Cape 

Helles, Turkey. There is a memorial for 

him in Linwood Cemetery.

Bid to fast track repairs 


GOING PUBLIC may 

have fast tracked repairs to 

Mairehau Rd. 

Last week Grant Donnell 

and his neighbour Terry 

Marsh spoke to the Pegasus 

Post about their frustrating 

battle to convince the city 

council the road needs to be 

fixed. They believed traffic 

going over potholes was 

causing cracks in their homes. 

Burwood Ward city 

councillor Glenn Livingstone 

also got involved and took 

the concerns to the Coastal- 

Burwood Community Board 

last Monday. The board has 

asked city council staff to 

prioritise the repair of the 

road. Cr Livingstone visited 

the site last Wednesday. 

Mr Donnell had been 

emailing and calling the city 

council for four years to get 

the road repaired. 

But he said in spite of Cr 

Livingstone’s initial failure to 

act on the issue when he first 

raised it with him in February, 

he was thankful that there was 

not action. 

“That feels great. He came 

over and I did give him an 

earful . . . I said I want you to 

go fight for your constituents. 

He did it, 100 per cent.” 

Mr Donnell said it was 

crucial Cr Livingstone 

continued to push for the 

repairs to start as soon as 

possible, given some of the 

new developments. 

“The sooner the better, 

because you’ve got Shirley 

Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ over 

this side of town now, so we’re 

going to have 10 times the 

amount of traffic.” 

Cr Livingstone said he 

asked staff to complete 

the repair of Mairehau Rd 

between Daytona Pl and 

Medina Crescent in the 2019- 

20 financial year instead of the 

2020-21 year, as planned. 

If this was approved, Cr 

Livingstone said the work 

would be completed by spring 

at the earliest, or the end of 

June next year at the latest. 

Cr Livingstone said he 

wanted to see this stretch 

of road prioritised ahead of 

Chadbury St in Parklands, 

which was scheduled for

App to help report bad smells

BROMLEY’S ODOUR issues 

could soon be solved through 

mobile phones. 

Environment Canterbury 

and the city council have been 

working together to investigate 

the ongoing issue of bad smells 

from industrial activity in the 

area. 

Now ECan has beta-tested an 

app, which would let residents 

and industries file and respond to 

odour complaints in real time. 

ECan manager zone delivery 

Paul Hulse said the public will be 

able to use the app to report how 

odour is impacting their environment 

and amenity. 

“They can advise us where they 

were when they smelt the odour, 

the intensity of the smell, what 

it smelt like and how long the 

odour lasted for. They can also 

see other reports of odour on a 

real-time map,” he said. 

But Mr Hulse said the project 

was in the very early stage. 

A prototype was piloted with 

previous complainants to help understand 

localised odour issues. 

“The app, while promising, 

needs further development and 

testing before a decision can be 

made as to if the solution will be 

implemented for full community 

use/rollout.” 

Bromley has long had an odour 

problem. 

The organics processing plant 

Living Earth on Metro Place, 

which deals with the contents of 

green bins, has been the source of 

most of the complaints. 

In 2016, a putrid stench 

wafted over the suburb plaguing 

residents and forcing Bromley 

School to close for two days, 

though the source was never 

determined. 

Mr Hulse said the community 

would be able to notify ECan 

quickly and easily if they are having 

issues which would increase 

its response time. 

“It will also assist us to rule 

in and rule out potential odour 

emitting sources by running the 

app notification against our wind 

data and other public notifications.”

we can do in conjunction with 

industry to improve odour in the

Barriers to 

improve 

road safety 

NEW FLEXIBLE road safety 

barriers that help stop head-on 

crashes and save lives are being 

installed on QE II Dr between 

Innes and Burwood Rds. 

The barriers are part of a $2.5 

million New Zealand Transport 

Agency road safety project that 

is due to be finished in June. 

It includes barriers down the 

side and middle of the road, road 

widening, and high-performance 

road marking that makes 

it easier for motorists to see the 

road ahead in the dark. 

NZTA transport systems 

manager Pete Connors said 

the barriers will make a real 

difference as many of the crashes 

on that stretch of highway 

involve cars colliding head-on or 

running off the road. 

“Flexible road safety barriers 

‘catch’ vehicles that leave their 

lane before they hit something 

less forgiving – like other 

vehicles or trees, poles or 

ditches,’’ Mr Connor said. 

There will be changes to 

the road layout and speed 

restrictions between Innes Rd 

and Burwood Rd while the work 

is done.

Toughen up call aimed at council

urged to toughen its policing of 

freedom campers along Marine 

Pde. 

Coastal-Burwood Community 

Board chairwoman Kim Money 

said she is concerned about the 

number of vehicles, which are 

not self-contained using the car 

parks. 

Ms Money 

said some 

campers were 

getting away 

with this by 

using fake

stickers with 

the words “selfcontained” 

on 

them. 

“Clearly the vans that have 

got the stickers on aren’t selfcontained. 

We see them using 

the facilities at Thomson Park 

and North Beach especially.” 

A city council spokesperson 

said staff were aware of these 

concerns and had measures in 

place to police this. 

“Compliance officers check 

the displayed warrant card and 

self-containment certificate 

to demonstrate compliance.

the option of cross-checking 

certification details with the 

available registers of certified

measures is required to ensure 

freedom campers followed 

the rules, strengthening the 

tools available to monitor selfcontainment 

stickers would help 

with this, Mr Davies said. 

“Addressing the enforcement 

of the self-contained standard is 

just one part of getting the whole 

system right.” 

Ms Money said when the 

MBIE had decided the best way 

to monitor self-containment 

stickers, she hoped the city 

council would take its advice on 

board. 

“It’s a nationwide thing and 

anything we can do to make it a 

happy experience for everybody 

all round is going to be definitely 

worth it.” 

The community board’s 

request to the city council in 

February to add additional 

signage to stop vehicles that are 

not self-contained using the 

North Beach and Thomson Park 

car parks was not acted 

on. 

The spokesperson said the 

current number of signs was 

adequate based on the current 

bylaws in the areas. 

“There are ‘self-contained only’ 

camping signs in all the lay-by 

areas opposite Thomson Park, 

and two signs at the North Beach 

car park. While more signs could 

be put in, staff have advised this 

is unlikely to have much of an 

effect as the existing signs are 

easily visible.”

CONSULTATION on a proposed 

pump track at the site of the 

former Shirley Community 

Centre will now go ahead. 

The city council approved a 

$87,850 grant for a relocatable 

track for bikes, scooter and skateboards. 

It came after the Papanui- 

Innes Community Board was 

approached by Shirley Primary 

School pupil Shannon Smith, who 

organised a petition for a bike or 

skate park. 

Board chairwoman Ali Jones 

said it was important to get the 

funding before consultation. 

She said there had been cases in 

the past where consultation has 

been completed only to find there 

was no money available. 

“Consulting on something 

creates an expectation in a community 

and we did not want to 

do that if there was no money 

available. In fact, as this is temporary, 

I am advised that we aren’t 

required to consult but this isn’t 

about what’s required, this is 

about talking with and listening 

to our community about activating 

a site that has not been used as 

a community space for more than 

eight years.”
