Unconventional Greenpark A
eye up another netball title
DO NOT expect Greenpark A
to change their unconventional
approach when they start their
defence of the Selwyn premier
netball title on Saturday.
Last season’s champions,
who relied on their experienced
heads and did not train between
games, will be the team to beat
but all the coaches agree it is
hard to pick a favourite on paper.
Greenpark A co-coach Zaylie
Sullivan believes it will be “a very
even season.”
The 2018 competition was
one of the most competitive in
recent years, with Greenpark
A upsetting top-qualifiers
Broadfield A by one goal in a
thrilling final.
Five of the six teams return
this season, with Prebbleton
the new team after the grading
weekend a fortnight ago. They
take Rolleston A’s spot in the top
grade.
Sullivan said her team will
remain largely unchanged. “We
are all competitive during the
game, but once it’s done, we just
go home and get on with it,” she
said.
“We want to maintain that
balance with life. We always
want to make the top four, but
I get the feeling it will be a very
even season.”
Sullivan hopes to play less now
The revolution
in heat pumps
is here now!
she is in the coaching role so she
will be able to see more tactically
from the sideline.
Broadfield A are looking to
go one step further this year
and started with four wins at
a preseason tournament in
Ashburton where they were
unbeaten. Coach Yvonne
Crichton-Hill said it was a
chance for her team to get used
to combinations again and she
was happy with what she saw.
They will have the services
of experienced and accurate
shooter Maia Hill, while
defender Shan Hunt will also be
one to watch.
Greenpark B improved
immensely last season,
managing to earn a semi-final
spot.
Player-coach Mechelle
Harrison expects a competition
where even bonus points are
fought over.
“We have the core of our squad
back again and we’ve brought in
a few others to plug the gaps.”
she said.
“We feel our shooting circle
will be a work in progress, but
we have the time for that and we
believe that our combinations
as a whole will get better as the
season goes on.”
Lincoln coach Dawn Dalley
said there will be a youthful look
to their squad this year.
“We have five players who
returned from last year and four
new ones to the team,” Dalley
said.
“It’s quite a different looking
team to the ones we have had in
recent seasons.
“We have new players in
all areas of the court so those
combinations will take time.”
Shooter Hannah Wilson will
be vital for Lincoln, as will
Leesa Anderson in winning
turnovers in the mid-court.
“Defensively, we have a bit
of height, but that’s our most
inexperienced part of the
court.”
Dalley said the top four is still
their goal, but with no dominant
team, she expects a close
competition from top to bottom.
Southbridge coach Sarah
Ormandy believes she has
enough experience in her squad
to challenge for a semi-final spot
this year.
They will rely on experienced
mid-courters Kath Palmer and
Tylie McMillan.
“We’ve also got some height at
the defensive end so hopefully
we can be a contender,”
Ormandy said.
Meanwhile, Prebbleton
may be the newcomers, but
several squad members have
played together in the North
Canterbury ranks and they
certainly won’t be there to make
up the numbers.
WEST MELTON’S Emily
Cammock and Lincoln’s Lucy
Turner have plenty of confidence
heading into the national
three-day equestrian event at
Taupo.
Cammock will be riding
Shaw Lee, while Turner will
be on Astek Victor at the event
on May 10. Both combinations
won classes at the South Island
one-day event champions at the
National Equestrian Centre,
McLeans Island, in preparation
for the three-day event.
Cammock won the 4* class,
while Turner was successful in
the carousel equestrian CCI3*
class.
Cammock said it wasn’t the
perfect round. “It was a tough
track with lots of different
questions and he had the
answers.”
Cammock also had a win her
palomino, Golden Kiwi, in the
Hygain CCN95 class.
Equestrian riders confident
of success at national event
“He was a bit spooky, but felt
happy and was taking me to the
jumps.”
The Carousel Equestrian
CCI3* class was won by Turner
on Astek Victor. She produced a
very accomplished final round in
the cross-country. “Honestly, he
felt awesome,” Turner said.
“He gave me a really good
ride, he went straight and felt so
confident. I am stoked.”
The pair have been selected on
the long list for the New Zealand
young rider team to compete
against the Australians at Taupo.
Another promising young rider
is Prebbleton’s Jamie Atkinson.
On Cluedo he won the Rangiora
Equestrian Supplies CCN95
class. The combination have only
been together a year. “He’s been
out with an injury for a while
too,” said Atkinson. “He hasn’t
done a lot of eventing, more show
jumping, but I plan on taking
him to the Rangiora Pony Club
event shortly.”
