After thirty years on Key Biscayne the Miami Open had outgrown its scenic
home. In 2017, the Miami Open signed an agreement with Miami-Dade
County to move the annual tournament from the tennis complex in Key
Biscayne to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens starting in 2019.
Over $500 million dollars were spent in additions and renovations
to transform the Hard Rock Stadium and accommodate
the event. Along with a14,000-seat stadium within a
stadium, the new tennis portion of the grounds features 29 permanent
tournament and practice courts. The Hard Rock Stadium venue
offered tennis fans a comfortable spectator oasis showcasing the
culture, food, art and entertainment of South Florida, highlighted
by the largest video board in tennis to catch all the action.
Throughout its history, this tournament has attracted many of
the top men and women tennis players, and this year was no exceptionwith
names like Federer, Djokovic, Williams, Osaka and more.
The total prizemoney of $3,645,000.puts this tournament in the top
three of non-Grand Slam events on the tour.
The event set numerous attendance records for the history of the
tournament with an overall record attendance of 388,734 spectators.
The spaciousness of the new facilities - even with setting records
on 15 of its 24 sessions - it never felt overcrowded. The new
facility and the ease of access to the stadium makes the future of the
Miami Open in its new home lookvery bright.
