Petition started to keep Kmart
• By Matt Slaughter
KMART IN the Palms
Shopping Centre is set to close.
It will mark the end of the
store’s 23-year tenancy at the
mall.
But the news has not gone
down well with residents,
prompting
Shirley’s
Josiah
MacKay
to start a
petition to
save the store.
“Kmart is
the closest
Josiah MacKay
thing
Shirley has
to The Warehouse, the closest
The Warehouse stores are
in Northwood, Linwood or
Riccarton.
“With enough support, I
believe that we could have a
chance in convincing Kmart
Australia to look over their
decision in relocating our Kmart
store.”
AMP Capital, which owns The
Palms, was asked what impact
the closure is expected to have
on trade within the shopping
centre, but did not comment on
this specifically.
Instead, a spokesperson
ON THE MOVE: Residents are concerned the relocation of
The Palms Kmart to Papanui will mean the “death’’ of the
shopping centre.
PHOTO: FINDCHCH.COM
said “AMP Capital has a longstanding
partnership with
Kmart across its portfolio and
would like to thank Kmart for
its support of the centre since
the store opened. The Palms
looks forward to announcing a
new tenant for this space in due
course.” Meanwhile, Papanui
residents have given the thumbs
up to the store’s relocation to
Langdons Rd.
A 4500 sq m store is set to
open in the Northlink shopping
precinct in early 2020.
Mr MacKay does not oppose
the idea of moving Kmart to
Papanui, but wants an entirely
new store to open at Papanui,
instead of relocating the existing
Shirley store.
A post about the relocation
on the Think Papanui Facebook
page generated more than 3500
comments in 12 hours.
Many expressed their
concerns about the effect it may
have on The Palms and the lack
of access to a Kmart store for
people in the east.
“This will be the death of The
Palms,” said one comment.
However, the move has
sparked positive feedback from
residents in the north-west about
employment opportunities,
less travel distance to Kmart
and a large amount of off-street
parking near the new site.
Kmart New Zealand country
manager Jason Picard said the
decision was part of a vision
to grow the store’s network in
Christchurch.
“We are doing this by
ensuring our stores are in the
best locations to service our
customers now and well into the
future. It’s important we support
the communities we operate
in and we hope customers will
enjoy the benefits of our new
store in Papanui.”
standards.
