THE ZERO DEBT COLLEGE
PROJECT
According to a recent article from
Business Insider (May, 2019), over 3
million senior citizens are STILL repaying
student loans. Read more here
Let’s do this better for the next
generation.
I am a mental health professional
celebrating 18 years in solo private
practice. About five years ago, an
unfortunate trend came to my
attention. I noticed that students
were constantly graduating
successfully from high school, only to
enter a mountain of debt in pursuit of
their adult dreams. I volunteer my
time to Whatsoever Is Good, Inc. a
501c3 nonprofit dedicated to helping
students acquire scholarships instead
of student loans!
TIPS
9 th grade –
Set up your RaiseMe account
Begin documenting each and every award and achievement
10 th grade
Get into a LEADERSHIP position in whatever activities you already enjoy.
Practice Speed Reading. You have less than one minute per question on the ACT.
11 th grade
If your ACT score is not in Scholarship Range keep trying. Even if the school you plan to attend does not
require a high score, to get many merit based scholarships you still need a high ACT and/or SAT score.
12 th grade
Don’t stop applying to scholarships until your pockets are full! Don’t believe the myth that you only
need to apply for scholarships during the spring semester. APPLY all year long!
Graduating Senior Tips
IT’S LATE BUT DON’T PANIC
It’s May. Many seniors are
anxious. Maybe you’ve not yet
sealed the deal on ALL the dollars
you’ll need for school next year.
It’s late, but don’t panic.
Scholarships are available YEAR
ROUND.
Here are TWO steps to take.
1. If you haven’t already, set
up accounts on the major
scholarship search sites.
Going Merry and
UNIGO are two that you
might find helpful.
2. If you haven’t already, it’s
time to reach out to family
and ask about local
scholarships. Do this –
create a text message and
email campaign. Send a
message to ALL your
family, teachers, mentors,
coaches. Let them know
(1) That you are looking
for both local and national
scholarships (2) share a
few details about yourself
– your intended major,
your GPA, your volunteer
hours, your leadership
experience, your awards
and honors, clubs,
activities, and sports (3)
your contact information.
SCHOLARSHIP
LEADS
Take personal
responsibility for
scholarship leads
You know who has scholarships
leads? Other seniors. They’ve
been looking just like you have.
Reach out to other graduating
seniors. Share leads. Most of all
take personal responsibility for
finding scholarship leads and
DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE!
