Superhero Date Night a blockbuster hit for the Tinley park district
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Look! Over at the Bettenhausen
Recreation Center!
It's a bird. It's a plane.
It's... the superhero moms
and sons of Tinley Park!
On Friday, May 3, the
Tinley Park–Park District
hosted its annual Mother/
Son Superhero Date Night.
Games, dancing and character
visits were among the
evening's entertainment as
families enjoyed a night of
comic-inspired fun.
Recreation Supervisor
Mary Wrobel explained
that while the recent release
of “Avengers: Endgame"
has generated a lot
of buzz, the event's 188
attendees celebrated superheroes
from every universe.
“Little boys and their
action heroes have always
been popular, but it doesn't
hurt that 'The Avengers'
movie just came out. We
have people dressing up
in various characters. We
have Batman, The Hulk,
The Flash,” said Wrobel.
“There are a lot of wonderful
moms so we have
a lot of Wonder Woman
costumes. It's not just the
children dressing up, it's
the moms, too.”
After checking in, each
dynamic duo headed
downstairs to the gym
where they enjoyed a DJ,
games and photo opportunities.
This year, sons were
invited to create a picture
frame craft decorated with
comic imagery. Everyone
also received a goody bag
and enjoyed light refreshments.
Tinley Park residents
Sue and 9-year-old DJ
McCarthy have been attending
the Mother/Son
Date Night for the past
four years.
“It's family fun. It's a
date night for moms and
sons. It's perfect. You get
to dress up and show your
superhero style,” said Sue.
DJ said that the pair decided
to dress-up in Batman
apparel because "The
Dark Knight" is his favorite
superhero.
“I like how stealthy he
is,” said DJ. “'The Lego
Batman Movie' is my favorite
because I think it
has a good sense of humor.”
Mild-mannered Bruce
Banner was nowhere to
be found throughout the
night, but his alter-ego
The Hulk was one of the
most a popular costumes.
Six-year-old Tinley Park
resident Noah Wagner was
dressed in green from head
to toe in honor of the Marvel
Comics icon.
“I like that he's strong.
When he gets mad he becomes
The Hulk,” he said.
Noah's mom Margarita
Wagner added that the
date night was a great opportunity
to let loose and
have fun, adding, “I love
that we get to hang out, be
silly and dress up and have
a good time dancing and
taking pictures.”
The perfect photo opportunity
came when Batman
himself swooped into
the party to meet all of the
attendees. Elsewhere at
the event, moms and sons
enjoyed participating in
the Limbo, dancing to the
“Cha-Cha Slide” and listening
to pop hits.
Wrobel said that making
family memories is always
at the heart of the Mother/
Son Superhero Date Night.
“We have the Daddy
Daughter Dance, where
dads bring their daughters,
and this is a special
event for the moms and
their sons to spend time
together,” said Wrobel.
“They can dance, play
some games and I think
the dressing up part of it
is something people really
enjoy too.”
Wrobel added that the
Tinley Park–Park District
has even more fun in store
for moms with its Mom &
Me Golf special event at
the Tinley Junction Miniature
Golf Course on Mothers
Day, May 12 during
which moms who play a
round get a free gift. Later
in the month, everyone
who golfs on May 27 receives
a free small sundae
in honor of Memorial Day.
More information about
upcoming opportunities
for family fun at the Tinley
Park–Park District can be
in honor of A.J.
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Dancers at T-N-T Extreme Dance in Tinley Park gather around their drop-off box
for items being collected for Stuff The Duffel in honor of 5-year-old A.J. Freund of
Crystal Lake who was found dead April 24. Photo submitted
In the midst of a recent
tragedy that has touched
nearly the whole state,
Chicago-area communities
are rallying around
each other to heal and provide
hope after the death
of 5-year-old Crystal Lake
boy, A.J. Freund.
Tinley Park resident and
owner of T-N-T Extreme
Dance, Tara Arthur-Jurgovan,
has joined 90 other
businesses in efforts to
shed light on the needs of
foster children and bring
about something positive
during a time of sorrow. T-
N-T is one of the drop-off
sites for Stuff The Duffel,
created by Crystal Lake
foster parent Alicia Wehby,
which collects items to
be given to foster children
that are necessities within
the first 24 to 48 hours of
being placed in a foster
home.
“I’m hoping it will give
other kids that are going
through some kind of familiar
circumstances as
A.J. went through with
the hope that there are
people out there that do
care, and that hopefully
more families will open up
their hearts and their doors
to these kids so they are
taken away and provided
the necessities of life,”
Arthur-Jurgovan said.
Freund was reported
missing by his parents on
April 18, just six days before
his father allegedly
led police to his body on
April 24. The 5-year-old
was reportedly in foster
care for 18 months after
he was born in October
2013. His parents have
both been charged with his
murder.
“We always try to find
an organization every
year to help out, like last
year we did GiGi’s Playhouse
and then this year
we chose to do Stuff The
Duffel,” Arthur-Jurgovan
said.
people get is] that every
little bit helps, and even
Andrew NHS reaches record high membership
National Honor Society
(NHS) is a nationwide
organization established
to recognize outstanding
high school students who
have demonstrated excellence
in five areas: scholarship,
service, leadership,
character and the quest for
knowledge.
With membership reaching
a record high, the NHS
chapter at Victor J. Andrew
High School continues
to increase its efforts to
serve the local community.
The chapter is the largest
it has ever been with
244 members this year and
consists of junior and senior
students who dedicate
their time to provide community
service. Each NHS
member must complete
a minimum of 30 service
hours, which includes a
combination of service to
the Andrew community
and outside organizations.
Collectively, they will provide
over 7,300 hours of
service to the school and
the local community.
Through their service,
students have visited nursing
homes, assisted with
clothing drives, wrote
Christmas cards for the
Manteno Veteran’s Home,
packaged Easter baskets
for underprivileged children
and much more.
While these are just a few
examples, the full list of
projects they help with
goes on.
“All of these experiences
help our members learn
more about what they
might want to further involve
themselves in,” said
Sandra Dirker, NHS Sponsor
and Spanish teacher.
“They have the opportunity
to be exposed to things
in which they might not
normally involve themselves.
These experiences
are priceless and are also
so important for deciding
futures for these young
men and women.”
NHS students are required
to provide 20 hours
of service to the Andrew
community which could
include projects such as
tutoring, working as an
aide for a teacher, or helping
with school evets to
name a few. Additionally,
members must also complete
10 hours of service in
collaboration with outside
organizations. The Tinley
Park Chamber of Commerce,
Together We Cope
and The Bridge Teen Center
are among the many organizations
that this NHS
chapter serves.
“My favorite part of
NHS is how involved in
the community we are,”
said Jeffrey Serafini, the
Historian for NHS. “We
go above and beyond to
help the community. I feel
as if it gives me a purpose
that is bigger than me. The
work we do within the
community cannot simply
be done by one person; it
takes the entirety of the
group to come together
and really make a change
for the better in our community.”
To be inducted into this
society, students must be
involved in any two activities
at Andrew High
School and maintain a
minimum 3.8 grade point
average.
“Being a part of National
Honor Society looks
good on resumes and applications
to colleges, but
more importantly, provides
opportunities for the
students to lead which will
give them skills to apply to
their future positions in the
work force,” noted Dirker.
The group meets on
the first Wednesday of
every month to stay informed
about upcoming
service opportunities. All
members are split evenly
among seven elected NHS
officers so that each student
has a primary officer
with whom they can work
closely. The seven officers
for this school year
include: Danae Meyers,
President; Maggie Garand,
Vice President; Clarice
Ferrolino, Secretary;
Elizabeth Baier, Treasurer;
Haley Smith, Service Coordinator;
Gina Cannavan,
Public Relations; and Jeffrey
Serafini, Historian.
The officers for next year
have already been elected
and will include: Girvinn
Fernandez, President;
Austin Russell, Vice President;
Janelle Paras, Secretary;
Jonathan Laxamana,
Service Coordinator; Jack
Ballard, Treasurer; Shannon
Doran, Public Relations;
and Kevin Tesher,
Historian.
Together, the members
of NHS work hard to serve
the local community and
leave a lasting impact on
the people in it.
duffel
From Page 4
we take for granted [and]
that when they are taken,
they are removed and often
do not have any of
their own belongings with
them so I think just a lot
of awareness of foster care
[and] about what’s needed
in the foster care system,”
Wehby said.
The Crystal Lake mother
adopted three children
whom she fostered and has
one biological daughter.
“In town, everybody
knew that this child was
missing and so when [my
children] came home,
we had to tell them what
had happened and they
were very upset,” Wehby
said. “My youngest, we
just adopted last summer,
and he’s 10 now, but just
knowing the stories and
knowing what [AJ] lived
through it was just very
personal to us.”
In order to help her
family heal from the tragedy
of A.J’.s death, Wehby
thought it would be a great
idea to start Stuff The Duffel
among her friends and
family. She never expected
it to take off like it has. She
reached out to Let It Be
Us, a foster-care agency in
Barrington, asking to donate
items for the children.
“I posted [Stuff The
Duffel] to my personal
[Facebook] page and
overnight it just exploded,”
Wehby said. “It had
been shared hundreds of
times already and then
from there we just kind of
took it and realized it was
a much bigger movement
than we were expecting,
and turned it into the Facebook
group and I think
we’ve been gaining 1,000
followers a day and just
companies reaching out
from all over; everybody
has stepped up.”
She said there were already
so many businesses
in Crystal Lake volunteering
to be drop-off sites,
but others in towns across
Chicago were interested,
as well.
“We’re trying to get
especially in big areas,
like Tinley Park was one
that we had no drop offs
for so that’s great we finally
have a drop off out
there. They’re kind of all
over right now,” Wehby
said.
The Crystal Lake resident
said that after May
21, the nearly 100 dropoff
sites will deliver the
items they’ve collected
to a warehouse that was
donated to her for the initiative,
and she will sort
through everything and
put the bags together.
Arthur-Jurgovan said
that while the drive goes
until May 21, she doesn’t
want to stop there.
“I expressed that I
would like to continue
to do this even after the
21st,” she said.
And Wehby couldn’t
agree more.
“The more this has
grown, the more messages
that we’ve received. I’ve
seen not only this need but
there’s other needs that are
coming out,” Wehby said.
“I’m in some foster groups
so my husband and I are
definitely in the works of
turning this into a larger
type foundation, just in the
very early stages.”
Wehby would like
people to understand that
there are “a ton of A.J.’s
out there and they all need
help,” but even if one
can’t be a foster parent,
there are many ways to
make a difference, including
helping the Stuff The
Duffel initiative.
“Everybody that I’ve
talked just says it’s giving
them a sense of purpose
or giving them a chance
to feel like they’re doing
something good in
the midst of everything
bad that’s happening right
now,” Wehby said.

Police Reports
Three women charged for retail
theft in separate incidents at Target
Cailyn D. Hicks-Lewis,
22, of Chicago, was
charged with one felony
count of retail theft April
27, after police responded
to Target, located at
7300 191st St. in Tinley
Park, in reference to a reported
retail theft where
Hicks-Lewis allegedly
stole merchandise valued
at $1,000.91, according
to the Tinley Park Police
Department. According to
the report, two loss prevention
agents observed
four individuals, including
Hicks-Lewis, exit the store
with a shopping cart containing
items that had not
been purchased. The loss
prevention agents stopped
Hicks-Lewis pushing the
cart and escorted her to
the loss prevention office.
Police viewed surveillance
video taken inside the store
that reportedly showed the
four individuals placing
unpaid merchandise inside
of Target shopping bags at
the self check out register,
where they then placed
the bags into a shopping
cart. Hicks-Lewis was allegedly
seen paying for
several additional items
and placing them on top of
unpaid items. According to
the report, the Will County
Assistant State’s Attorney
Office did not approve
charges against the three
other individuals.
Heather R. Lee, 31, of
the 1110 block of Daniel
Trail in Mokena, was
charged with retail theft
April 25, after police responded
to Target, located
at 7300 191st St. in Tinley
Park, in reference to
a retail theft incident in
which Lee allegedly stole
$356.63 worth of merchandise,
according to the
Tinley Park Police Department.
According to the
police report, a loss prevention
agent noticed Lee
trying on clothes in the
clearance section and observed
her remove several
items of clothing from the
hangers on the racks. The
loss prevention agent told
police that she folded the
items of clothing she removed
from the racks and
placed them in piles on the
floor. The police report
stated that Lee walked to
the men’s section, where
she placed one shirt into
a black backpack she had.
She then continued to put
on several layers of clothing
she removed from the
racks. Lee then returned to
the clearance section and
placed several more items
of clothing into a multicolored
backpack and had
a shopping basket with
clothing items. According
to the report, she walked
past the last point of purchase
with the shopping
basket and two backpacks
containing the items of
clothing without paying
the full retail value.
Tammy Lynn Dunne, 56,
of the 700 block of Harrison
Avenue in Hammond,
Indiana, was charged with
one count felony retail
theft April 24, after police
were dispatched to Target,
located at 7300 191st St.
in Tinley Park, in reference
to a retail theft with
an offender in custody,
according to the Tinley
Park Police Department.
According to the police
report, two loss prevention
agents observed Dunne
walking around the store
putting various high-priced
items in her cart. She was
allegedly with two other
unknown females who also
placed items in Dunne’s
cart, as well as a separate
cart that had items totalling
$897.60. According
to the report, Dunne had
a total of $1,086.48 worth
of products in her cart as
she passed the last point
of purchase. She was then
stopped by loss prevention
agents. The two other unknown
females left the cart
they were pushing and left
the building through a different
exit once Dunne was
stopped. The two females
were unable to be located.
April 28
•Person(s) unknown stole
$3,200 worth of items
from a vehicle parked outside
of a residence on Lake
Bluff Drive in Tinley Park,
according to the Tinley
Park Police Department.
The man told police that
his wife was walking their
dog in the parking lot and
noticed the rear passenger
side door and rear passenger
side tool chest open.
According to the report,
the man told police that
his tool chest doors were
unlocked but the vehicle
was locked. A Bosch hammer
drill ($700), a Bauer
hamemr drill ($300), laser
($2,000) and a Dewalt
electric grease gun ($200)
were taken from the vehicle.
The man told police
that the vehicle and tools
belong to his company
Fogarty Enterprises.
Bettenhausen Auto to be part of summer lineup at The Bridge Teen Center
Submitted by
Bettenhausen Auto
Each year, The Bridge
Teen Center in Orland
Park provides more than
350 different afterschool
programs and events free
of charge for thousands of
local teens. This summer
alone, 100 free programs
will be offered, plus weekly
Friday night entertainment
events that feature
live music, themed nights
and free food from local
restaurants.
This summer, Tinley
Park’s own Bettenhausen
Auto will be a part of the
nonprofit organization’s
lineup of programs. The
Bettenhausen team will
teach students some basic
summer auto maintenance,
including recharging the
A/C and changing the oil.
For the last seven years,
Bettenhausen employees
have led automotive programs
for teens at The
Bridge.
To kick-off the summer,
The Bridge Teen
Center will host a Community
Open House and
New Student Orientation
on Saturday, June 1, at its
facility located 15555 S.
71st Court in Orland Park.
Families with teens who
will be in seventh through
12th grade in the fall are
welcome to attend this
event. This includes those
teens currently in sixth
grade who will graduate
this spring.
The New Student Orientation
will begin sharply at
10 a.m. and end at 11 a.m.
New families and teens
will meet Bridge staff, tour
their space, and get the inside
scoop, including how
to sign up for the free summer
programs and events.
Advance sign-up is strongly
recommended for the
orientation, as space will
fill up quickly. Families
can call (708) 532-0500
or email info@thebridgete
encenter.org to sign up.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
the public is welcome to
attend the open house and
celebrate The Bridge’s
9th Anniversary. This will
be the perfect opportunity
to get a behind the
scenes tour of The Bridge
Thrift Store, and enjoy
light snacks provided by
Creative Cakes, Legendary
Baking and more. Attendees
will also get an
exclusive look of upcoming
summer programs. All
students must be accompanied
by an adult during
this event, as this is not a
supervised student function.
New students are encouraged
to complete a
free Student Membership
Application several days
in advance to save time
and avoid long lines. The
application takes less than
five minutes when completed
online at www.thebridgeteencenter.org.
Orientation
guests are also
asked to park in the overflow
parking area behind
Traverso’s Restaurant located
on 71st Court and
Wheeler Drive in order
to save close spaces for
people who are physically
limited. A shuttle bus will
transport guests to The
Bridge’s front door.
The Bridge Teen Center
programming and a
Middle School sixth-grader
SINGLE FAMILY •815.462.0242
From $296,900
What is one essential you must have
when studying?
I have to have a book and a candle to
study so I can stay focused on my work
and forget about everything else that’s
around me.
What do you like to do when not in
school or studying?
I would like to spend time with my family
or go outside to see nature and to clear
my mind off of things.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to become a doctor
or scientist so I can help the people who
have an illness. Additionally, I wanted to
become a scientist to cure others so they
can reunite with their families and be
healthy again.
What are some of your most played
songs on your iPod?
Some of my most played songs are
Post Malone “Better Now” and “ See you
again” by Wiz Khalifa.
What is one thing people don’t know
about you?
A thing people don’t know about me is
that my mother is a fashion designer and
she has an account on Instagram called
tkouture.
Whom do you look up to and why?
I look up to my brother because whenever
I’m sad, afraid, or nervous he would
always calm me down and technically he
has always been there for me.
What do you keep under your bed?
I keep my personal stuff under my bed
such as my diary so no one can read, see,
or touch it.
photo submitted
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
I honestly don’t have a favorite teacher
because I like all my teachers equally.
There is not one teacher I like the most
because at the end of the day I know that
they all care and love their students. My
teachers are all unique in their own way.
What’s your favorite class and why?
My favorite class is E.L.A because I
think reading and writing is so much fun.
I also think it’s one of the best classes because
of my peers and teacher’s jokes.
What’s one thing that stands out about
your school?
One thing that stands out in my school
is that it’s be kind to others and treat others
how you want to be treated. I know
this stands out the most because when I
first came to Grissom there was not one
person being mean to me. They’re all
kind, generous and super nice.
What extracurricular(s) do you wish your
school had?
I wish my school taught us how to swim
because if someone like accidentally fell
into a pool and didn’t know how to swim,
they can drown and possibly die.
What’s your best memory from school?
The best memory from school is the St.
Baldricks event because I got to see my
peers and teachers shave their heads for
children who are facing cancer, and seeing
my teachers and classmates dancing
and seeing them doing their own unique
thing that makes them happy was just
awesome.
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Celebrating 50: Orland Fire
dedication paves way for
open house in July
Throughout the past 50
years, the Orland Fire Protection
District has grown
from a volunteer fire department
into a full-time
district with high accolades.
And with its 50th anniversary
upon it, Orland
Fire is focusing on its beginnings.
To begin its 50th anniversary
festivities, Orland
Fire hosted a dedication
ceremony April 27, honoring
past members.
“Each vehicle has a
plaque on the side, and our
goal here is to remember
our history,” Fire Chief
Michael Schofield said
prior to the event.
Several past members
were honored April 27.
Among them was Art
Granat Jr., who accepted
the honor for himself and
his late father, Art Granat
Sr. OFPD dedicated its
newest fire truck to the
father and son. Granat Sr.
was the first elected fire
chief when it was a volunteer
department. And
Granat Jr. spent 38 years
as a firefighter for Orland
Fire.
The department also
dedicated a new ambulance
to Donald Piscitello,
who served Orland Fire
from 1994-2011. He died
in 2016.
Finally, Orland Fire
dedicated its new Legacy
Lane, a wall within the administrative
building that
features images of all the
retired OFPD firefighters.
The wall was dedicated to
the two retired firefighters
who made it possible:
Dan Schloegel and Dan
Smith.
Orland Fire is to continue
to celebrate its anniversary
with an open house on
July 20. The open house is
to be held from 10 a.m.-
2 p.m. at the Orland Fire
Protection District Training
Academy, 10728 W.
163rd Place in Orland
Park.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Tragedy begets comedy
during Limestone Stage’s
‘I Hate Shakespeare’
The histories, tragedies
and comedies of William
Shakespeare have caused
countless theatergoers to
contemplate the meaning
of life and love. Limestone
Stage added laughter
to that list with its latest
production, “I Hate Shakespeare.”
The Steph DeFeriepenned
play found the
works of The Bard reimagined
and mined for
humor during a series of
performances held April
25-28 at the Lockport
Township Building. A texting
Juliet, zombie-hunted
Richard III and more had
fans in tears as a result of
laughing, from start to finish.
First-time Limestone
Stage cast member Josh
Funneman played Hamlet
throughout the night both
in the traditional sense and
as Shakespeare’s greatest
defender against the harsh
criticism of an Unhappy
Person played by Sabrina
Mangan. He served as a
narrator of sorts, introducing
scenes while illustrating
the many ways Shakespearean
themes are still
relevant today.
Limestone Stage Artistic
Director Kit Lindblom explained
that each year the
group presents a “spring
classic.” Past performances
have included “The
Taming of the Shrew,”
“The Importance of Being
Earnest” and “The
Seagull.”
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Passion for pooches
inspires Mokena pet stylist
The dog days of summer
may still be months away,
but a new spot in Mokena
can let pooches get a head
start on their summer hairstyles.
Bone-ita — located at
11600 Francis Road, Unit
C3, in Mokena — held its
grand opening and open
house April 28, where
community members and
their canine companions
got a look at the pet-styling
shop and were served
some treats.
Kristin Anaya, owner of
Bone-ita, got started in the
dog-grooming profession
straight out of high school
and has continued with her
passion for nearly the past
20 years.
“A lot of my friends
were going off to college
and I wasn’t sure what I
wanted to do,” Anaya said.
“I’ve always loved animals.
I thought about possibly
being a vet tech, but
I just didn’t think I could
deal with the sad stuff.
So, I heard of a grooming
school in Homer Glen,
which was close to home,
so I went there.”
Since then, Anaya has
worked with other pet
groomers, most recently
in Frankfort at Hair of the
Dog, and even competed
in dog-grooming shows,
at which she specialized in
miniature poodle styling.
“People ask me all the
time, ‘If you didn’t groom,
what would you do?’”
Anaya said. “I truthfully
don’t know. It’s my passion.
I love it. I can’t see
myself doing anything
else, ever.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox triplets all put
up big numbers on ACT
The McDermott sisters
felt confident that they
would score well on the
ACT after all of the practice
tests they had done,
but for all three to score
near perfect or perfect was
something else.
Alayna, Corina and
Madeline McDermott,
triplet juniors at Lincoln-
Way West, scored 36, 35,
35 on their ACTs, respectively.
Alayna scored a 35 the
first time she took the test
and turned it into a 36 on
the second try.
“I was speechless for a
while,” Alayna said. “But
I knew once I saw that
my scores were pretty
good, I knew that my sisters’
would also have done
pretty well because they’re
pretty on par with me most
of the time.”
Corina, though, is her
own worst critic, she said,
and while she knew her
sisters were going to score
well, she wondered if her
scores would be up there
with her sisters.
“When I got my score,
I was thrilled and really
proud of myself,” she said.
“I put effort in, too, I just
don’t realize it as much. I
was proud of them, and it
just shows that hard work
pays off.”
Madeline scored a 35 in
all four sections the first
time she took the test, with
no preparation or studying,
so she felt that with extra
practice tests and studying,
she could maintain or improve
her score.
“I didn’t really need to
learn anything; I just needed
to see if I could apply
it all in four hours, because
it does wear you down as
you go,” Madeline said.
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Stacey’s Place designs
one-of-a-kind projects
For Frankfort resident
Mike Moyzis, the best
part of completing a custom
woodworking project
is seeing how the finished
piece brings a smile to his
customers’ faces.
“It’s all personalized,”
he said.
Moyzis and his wife,
Stacey Burke, celebrated
the grand opening of their
new downtown Frankfort
shop on April 26. Stacey’s
Place, located at 4 W. Nebraska
St. in Frankfort,
incorporates many of the
items sold at the couple’s
former business, Morgan’s
Place, which specialized
in vintage and repurposed
home goods.
The new store also focuses
on refinished furniture,
Burke said.
“People bring in furniture
for us to paint, and we
couldn’t do that in a small
space,” she said. “So, by
taking this space on, it allowed
to showcase our
pieces, the scale of what
we do.”
Morgan’s Place was
named after former Lincoln-Way
Central student
Morgan Schiller, who
has Williams syndrome,
and Moyzis said the new
business will continue the
couple’s tradition of supporting
individuals with
special needs. In October,
Stacey’s Place partnered
with the Chicago-based I
Am Who I Am foundation
to host an event allowing
young entrepreneurs with
Down syndrome to showcase
jewelry, bath products
and other items they had
created.
I’m sure many of
you have been following
the terribly
unfortunate story of the
5-year-old Crystal Lake
boy, A.J. Freund, who
police say was killed.
Anytime a child — or
anyone for that matter
— goes missing, I see
that community provide
unbelievable support to
search for them and raise
awareness to make sure
they are found safely.
What makes this story
so difficult to read about
in the news, is almost
every other day learning
something new about
what that poor boy had
endured throughout his
nfyn
From Page 18
was a 24-year-old Bolingbrook
woman, police said.
She reportedly was transported
to an area hospital
in serious condition.
Matariyeh left the crash
site but was later apprehended
at his home, police
said. He was transported to
an area hospital for injuries
from the crash.
childhood. His death,
like so many others,
can’t help but bring
you to tears and want to
know why? Why him?
Why didn’t anyone stop
it? The only thing a community
can do during
those difficult times, is
to bring about something
positive in the midst of a
tragedy.
That’s exactly what
Tinley Park resident Tara
Arthur-Jurgovan and
owner of T-N-T Extreme
Dance in Tinley is trying
to do. She has teamed up
with 90 other businesses
across the Chicago-area
to host a donation drive
of items to be given to
children in foster care in
honor of A.J. Freund.
A foster mother from
Crystal Lake created
an organization called
Stuff the Duffel, which
is what the items are being
gathered for. Tinley
residents can go to T-
N-T and drop off items
through May 21. After,
Arthur-Jurgovan will
bring the donations to
Crystal Lake, where the
organization will look
through the supplies and
put backpacks or duffel
bags together of items to
be donated. You can read
more about this story on
Page 4.
I’m so glad to see such
an out pour of support in
honor of this little boy
who had clearly touched
so many people, not
just in Crystal Lake, but
around the area. In order
to heal, sometimes all we
can do is take a terrible
situation and bring about
something positive.
I would encourage
those in Tinley who
have either been inspired
by his story to make
a change, or just want
to help, to visit www.
stufftheduffel.org to see
a list of items that the
organization is looking
for to be collected. The
items requested should
be brand new.
It is extremely heartwarming
to see so many
people coming together,
particularly those from
Tinley Park. When
everyone works together,
it’s amazing to see all the
great things that can be
accomplished.
The Dancing Noodles celebrate 35th anniversary
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Not many area musicians
can say they have
played with former Eagles
guitarist Joe Walsh or were
complemented by the
members of The Mamas
and the Papas.
They also probably
cannot say that they have
been playing together for
the past 35 years. But the
members of the Chicago
area’s The Dancing Noodles
can.
The self-described party
band is celebrating its 35th
anniversary this year. The
band — which plays timeless
R&B, Motown and
soul music — was formed
in 1984 by a group of area
musicians looking for a
fun project that would get
people off their feet and
dancing.
“We actually played
our first job, specifically,
35 years ago last Saturday,
[April 27],” Dancing
Noodles keyboardist
and Tinley Park resident
Ed Kammerer said. “Everybody
in the band was
a veteran musician from
the Chicago music scene
[or] the Champaign music
scene.”
The Dancing Noodles
eventually came together
via the members’ previous
bands and connections
with area musicians,
as well as local DJs, such
as WLUP’s Roman Sawczak,
who was a founding
member of The Dancing
Noodles.
“At that point, [all] we
wanted to do was to play
music that was danceable,
that was positive,” Kammerer
said. “We didn’t
want to do stuff that was
like broken heart-type
songs or anything like that.
So ... 90 percent of the
music was Motown. We
played Temptations, Four
Tops and Jackson 5, and
it caught hold, because the
band was good, the music
was good. People started
coming out a lot. So then,
the DJs on WLUP, who
all knew Roman because
Roman worked on Steve
Dahl’s radio show...the
radio DJs started talking
about The Dancing Noodles
and coming to see us,
and all of a sudden we’re
setting attendance records
at bars and festivals, even
all around the Southland.”
Through these connections,
Kammerer was
joined by Lemont’s Terry
Canning and Orland Park’s
Brian Sarna, who remain
members of the band to
this day, along with Kammerer.
“When The Noodles
came along, the idea was
just to have fun with it and
play rock and soul music,
and it took off,” Canning
said.
When Sarna was recruited,
he was excited to play
the songs from the 1960s,
with their own rock-inspired
edge, he said. It was
something no one else was
doing and a project with
which he could have fun.
“How could I not do it?”
he said. “It was an easy
choice for me.”
Throughout the years,
life sometimes got in the
way, but that didn’t keep
The Dancing Noodles
from playing when they
could, despite holding fulltime
jobs and raising families.
The band has gone
through several iterations,
with various individuals
playing in the wind section
and stepping in to take
the place of those who had
to leave for a time, Kammerer
said.
“The longevity came because,
well, life interferes
with everything, and some
of us at some points would
leave the band and then
come back,” Kammerer
said. “Our drummer, Terry
Canning, and bassist, Brian
Sarna, they’re the ones
who kept it together.”
Canning said the band
went through an evolution,
with more members at
some points, but it always
stayed true to its R&B,
Motown and soul roots.
Despite the time that
has passed, the music has
remained the same. And
those who see The Dancing
Noodles play still love
it, Sarna said.
“It’s just so much fun,”
Sarna said. “The songs we
do are timeless. It’s such a
fun party band. We were all
trying to be rock stars back
in the day, and when that
failed, it was like, ‘Hey
man, we’ve got this talent,
and let’s just have some
fun.’ That’s really what
the whole thing was about,
and then, all of a sudden,
it’s 35 years, and I’m like,
‘I probably wanted to quit
20 years ago, but the guys
are so good and it’s just so
much fun.’”
He added that the bond
that the musicians formed
on stage also has been the
key to its longevity.
To celebrate the 35th
anniversary, The Dancing
Noodles played a special
show at the Beverly Arts
Center on Saturday, May
4, in which several previous
band members and
friends played alongside
the group. During the
show, a projected slideshow
showed images
of the band throughout
(Left to right) Ed Kammerer, of Tinley Park, Roman Sawczuk, Kevin Fabish (in the
middle of the pack) Paul Martin, Brian Sarna and Terry Canning of The Dancing
Noodles are celebrating their 35th anniversary. Photo submitted
the years. Additionally,
they showed congratulatory
videos from their old
friends, such as Kevin
Matthews and Steve Dahl.
With more than three
decades under their belts,
the three core members
said they are not ready to
set their instruments down
just yet. To the contrary,
Kammerer said that the
band’s popularity is growing
again. In fact, the band
will be opening for Smash
Mouth at this year’s Chicago
RidgeFest.
“It was super fun back
in the day, but now it’s
even better,” Kammerer
said. “Our opinion and our
thought has always been
that if we couldn’t deliver
the product to the point
that we were happy with
it, then it would be time to
hang it up, but at this point
in time the band is still as
good as we were. We’re
also having a good time,
the people who come out
to see us seem to be having
a good time, so there’s
Keyboardist Ed Kammerer, of Tinley Park, performs
for their 35th anniversary on Saturday, May 4. Laurie
Fanelli/22nd Century Media
no point in the immediate
future that we’re planning
on pulling the plug. Plus, it
keeps us young.
“I can speak for all of
us in saying that we’re
blessed in having a second
job doing something we
love that we completely
enjoy.”
Sarna added, “I say we
keep going until health
gets us. Like I said, because
of the genre of music,
the party band aspect,
there’s not a lot of pressure
on us. The gigs come to us,
and that means these people
want to have a good
time. So, I think we’ll keep
it going for a while.”
Grade-school project has kept Tinley Park family smiling for more than 20 years
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
Most Mother’s Day gifts have
a short shelf life: A card displayed
for a month; flowers that
last a week; a nice, two-hour
meal.
For one Tinley Park family,
however, a simple plant is a gift
that’s kept giving for more than
20 years.
As a young student at Christa
McAuliffe Elementary School,
Amanda Meyers — a 30-yearold
English teacher these days
— painted a pot, put a plant in it
and gave it to her mother, Trish,
for her Mother’s Day present.
The plant is still going and is still
bringing smiles to the family all
these years later.
“It was a simple gift that
wound up being a really cool,
long-lasting thing,” said Don
Meyers, the family patriarch.
“Everything I plant dies, so it’s
really pretty amazing.”
The Meyers family, which
includes Amanda’s older sisters
Anna and Beth, aren’t 100 percent
sure when the plant entered
their lives — Amanda’s thirdgrade
year is their best bet. But
Trish fondly recalls receiving it.
“She came home and was all
excited but had to wait to give me
it,” Trish said. “She was wondering
what my reaction would be.
I was over the moon, of course,
and she broke out in the biggest,
proudest smile.”
In the years since, the plant’s
been a continuous presence on
their kitchen sink window sill, a
reminder of their bond and what
they’ve meant to each other.
Trish, Amanda pointed out,
has given her a life’s worth of
gifts both big and small.
“My mom is the strongest
woman I know,” Amanda said,
describing her mother’s bravery
during a recent bout with breast
cancer and years of attending
Amanda’s dance, swim and soccer
events. “My mom puts family
before anything else. Growing
up, she never missed anything —
and I mean anything.”
Even now, with Amanda
Trish (left) and Amanda Meyers, a Tinley Park mother and daughter
who, among other things, have been tied together over the years by
a plant Amanda gave Trish for Mother’s Day more than 20 years ago.
teaching high schoolers in Chicago,
coaching soccer and busy
with other activities, Trish and
her remain tight. (Trish and Don
have been married 50 years, having
met when they were 10.)
“To this day, I receive regular
text messages about what she
did that day, and she always remembers
to ask me how my soccer
season and tutoring sessions
are going,” Amanda said. “I keep
very busy, and my mom remembers
— and is as involved as she
can be — in everything I do.”
Trish’s motherly ways are
what led Amanda to teaching.
“She has a way with words,”
Amanda said, describing the
letters her mother often wrote
to cheer her up in tough times.
“She showed me some of the
most powerful communication
can happen through the written
word, and that’s a lesson I try
to teach my students on a daily
basis.”
Trish is similarly proud of
Amanda.
“She’s a loving, compassionate,
supportive, selfless woman,”
Trish said. “As her grandmother
would say, ‘There’s nothing too
hot or too heavy for her to handle.’”
Being a mother to three daughters
has been her life’s privilege,
Trish said.
“It’s the hardest job ever, but
that being said, it’s also the most
incredible blessing,” she said.
“Don and I have been fortunate
to have three loving, incredible,
successful daughters. We
Amanda Meyers, these days a high school teacher and soccer
coach in Chicago, holds the famous plant. Photos submitted
couldn’t have written a better
script.”
The only thing possibly better?
Being a grandmother —
Trish has five, ages 2 to 8.
“You get love and hugs and
giggles and you aren’t in charge
of any of the discipline,” she
said. “You can just love and spoil
them. There are no words to describe
that happiness.”
Life hasn’t been all roses for
the long-lasting plant. It’s looked
close to death’s door more than
once — generally after a long
family vacation — but it’s always
managed to snap back to
health.
“It really likes it here, apparently,”
Don said with a laugh.
They’re not sure what type
of plant it is either; just that it’s
durable and sprouts pink flowers
around this time of year.
“It’s an old plant,” Don said.
“That’s about all I know.”
The plant, however — still
in its original pot, with a young
Amanda’s handwriting etched
on its side — is clearly more
than any old plant, if you ask one
of the Meyers.
“We see the plant all the time
doing the dishes,” Don said. “I’ll
find myself looking at it, and it
just makes you think.”
As of press time, the family
hadn’t formed any particular
Mother’s Day plans. But their
usual routine is straight-forward
enough.
“It typically involves breakfast
and a walk,” Amanda said.
“Sometimes we’ll watch a movie.
My mom’s only ask is just
that we’re all together.”

LWE student’s play focuses on history, sacrifice
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
For Lincoln-Way
East student Anmarie
D’Ortenzio, music and
theater have been lifelong
passions.
The high school junior,
who has been singing since
she was 4 years old, is the
daughter of a voice teacher
and the granddaughter of
an opera singer. She also
spent 10 years with with
Curtain Call Theatre in
Mokena — experience that
helped prepare her for her
newest role as director.
On April 28,
D’Ortenzio’s play “Sweet
Pride” premiered at the
Founders Community
Center in Frankfort. More
than 50 students auditioned
for the community
production, which
D’Ortenzio wrote, produced
and directed.
“This is about a love
story during the Civil War,”
D’Ortenzio explained. “It
focuses on sacrifice and
how our pride gets in the
way of what we truly want.
Writing, producing and
directing this has been the
best experience of my life.”
D’Ortenzio has been in
more than 15 productions,
and her grandmother is her
main voice teacher.
“I’ve always had a love
for theater,” D’Ortenzio
said. “I can remember my
first role, which was a poppy
in ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ I
was 6 years old.”
D’Ortenzio described
her cast members, many of
whom are fellow Lincoln-
Way East students, as “incredible,”
adding everyone
volunteered their time on
Sunday nights to make the
production happen.
“Due to complications
with space, we got kicked
out of our original spot,”
D’Ortenzio said, laughing.
“ ... I expected to
show this in a small room
at my school. We ended
up with the show being
at the Founders Center. It
worked out better than I
ever expected.”
In the months leading
up to the play’s debut,
D’Ortenzio’s mother, Marie
Michuda-D’Ortenzio,
opened up the family’s
home as a rehearsal space
for 28 students.
“I cook a lot,” Marie
Michuda-D’Ortenzio said.
“We have a big foyer. For
two months, I’ve had costume
racks, a stump, prop
tables in my living room.”
D’Ortenzio wrote
three different versions
student Ellie Houlihan, who plays the role of Margaret
in the production.
of “Sweet Pride,” but it
was only within the past
year that the final product
came to life. She credited
Lincoln-Way East Choir
Director Hanna Samawi
with giving her the push
forward to succeed.
“Putting this together
has been a lot of hard work
not only for me, but my
assistant director and the
entire cast,” D’Ortenzio
said. “Everyone pitched in,
even the moms.”
Max Adams, who had
the lead role of John, said
he was honored to be in
his friend’s production.
The Lincoln-Way East junior
not only performed in
“Sweet Pride” but was also
in his high school’s spring
musical, “Mamma Mia!”
“Anmarie is my best
friend,” Adams said.
“When I found out she
was writing a play, I knew
instantly I wanted to be involved.
I know how hard
she works. I knew it was
going to be amazing, and I
had to be part of it. When
she said proceeds were going
to the Frankfort food
pantry, I wanted to do this
even more. Being involved
in a process like this makes
this so much more rewarding.”
Lincoln-Way East senior
Ellie Houlihan, of
Tinley Park, plays John’s
love interest in the play.
“Sweet Pride” marked her
final performance as a high
school student.
“It’s so meaningful to
work with all these amazing
people — to keep
learning as my final high
school acting career ends,”
she said.
Houlihan has taken part
in all of the Lincoln-Way
East musicals since her
freshman year of high
school.
“Today, I play a southern
belle who is not satisfied
with her home life,”
she said. “She is looking
for an outlet to find
freedom and herself in a
new way. This is the biggest
role I’ve ever had. To
play Maggie and see the
world through her eyes has
been interesting. My mom
would say I’m a little like
Maggie. She’s not afraid to
use her voice. She makes
herself heard, and I admire
that about her.”
For D’Ortenzio, the play
was a way to give back to
the community. Audience
members donated cans
of food, boxes of macaroni
and cheese and other
items, and all proceeds
went to the Frankfort
Township Food Pantry.
“I have a donation
bucket; we’re selling tea,”
D’Ortenzio said. “This
whole entire process is to
help the community. There
is no better way than to
bring the community together
than through beautiful
words.”

The Dish
A sweet selection at Whizzy Puffs sets itself apart from the rest
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Editor
In just two hours after
opening for the day on a
recent Friday morning,
Whizzy Puffs Sweet Spot
in Lockport sold out of all
363 doughnuts that filled
the shelves of the breakfast
cafe.
It is no surprise, as they
are not typical doughnuts.
Owner Merve Nolte
wakes up in the wee hours
of the morning to start
baking all the doughnuts
and pastries from scratch,
taking 4-5 hours, before
opening at 6 a.m.
The shelves are filled
with unique doughnuts
most likely not found anywhere
else. Nolte makes
her signature doughnuts,
that include maple, Cocoa
Krispies, caramel
coconut, chocolate yeast
raised and more. Each
doughnut is $1.50; a half
dozen is $8.75; and a dozen
is $13.
This may be a breakfast
cafe, but it comes with a
twist.
As soon as customers
walk inside Whizzy Puffs,
they can see the left wall
lined with a selection of
18 different cereals. Unlimited
bowls are $3, and
her creativity at both food
something different.
can’t get the experience
Popular breakfast cereal
box covers are plastered
all over the far back wall,
with a backdrop of doughnut
wallpaper and clever
doughnut sayings throughout
Whizzy Puffs Sweet
Spot that give it that fun,
creative feel.
In addition to the wide
selection of cereals and
doughnuts, within the last
couple of months, Nolte
added a yogurt parfait bar,
Danishes ($3.25), chocolate
croissants ($2.25),
muffins ($2.25) and popup
cake pops ($3.75).
“I really enjoy what I
do,” Nolte said. “I really
like what I do — like, I
do it because I enjoy it. I
to, but I like what I do,
things all the time.”
And what pairs better
with a breakfast pastry
than a sweet beverage to
make it complete?
Whizzy Puffs Sweet Spot is known for its wide-selection of doughnuts ($1.50 each) that are made from scratch.
Whizzy Puffs offers iced
and hot coffee, hot chocolate,
hot tea, almond and
soy milk, and lattes. The
newest drink is the Lucky
Charm latte ($3 for small,
$4 for medium and $4.75
chocolate raspberry syrup,
whipped cream and Lucky
“I just see [Whizzy
like little sweet things [in
the future],” Nolte said.
“It’s more trendy, so that
when I see that something
is different and I personally
want to try it, I make it.”
Nolte makes it a priority
to constantly add new
items to the menu to give
customers what they want.
As Whizzy Puffs is only
open three days a week,
there is always a line of
customers waiting for Notle’s
unique treats.
“I feel like all the effort I
put [in] is being realized,”
Nolte said. “My goal is to
share my love and enthusiasm
of food with others.
My primary goals are all
related to customer service,
food consistency,
differentiation from other
retailers and, of course, to
have fun.”
Her customer base has
grown into regulars who
have created friendships
with Nolte.
“It’s my personality,”
Nolte said. “I genuinely
care about people, so I
get along with just about
everybody. We’ve all become
close.”
Those relationships
The breakfast cafe offers customers a choice of 18
that’s how everybody’s
gotten to know my character
is it’s not just like
a cold-face expression,”
Nolte said. “I’m not just
looking for money. Obviously
it’s part of it, but it’s
not the be all end all. ... It’s
just not the most important
thing.”

Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Darryl Farrow
Darryl Farrow is a senior
at Andrew and a middle
hitter on the boys volleyball
team.
The volleyball team
has been off to a good
start this season.
What’s made the
difference?
I think as a team we just
wanted to do it. We have a
different mindset and we
wanted to start out the season
with a good record.
When did you start
playing volleyball?
I first tried it in seventh
grade when I was at Prairie
View. I decided to do it on
my own. I started playing
club volleyball during my
junior year with Ultimate.
Did you play any other
sports?
I used to play soccer in
high school. I played it
through my sophomore
year but stopped playing it
last year to concentrate on
volleyball.
What is it about
volleyball that makes
it the sport for you?
It’s action-packed. Every
play, every point is action-packed.
It’s just fun to
be around your team and a
fun sport to play.
Speaking of team,
you and fellow senior
middle blocker Michael
Sherwood make quite
a tandem. How’s it
been playing with
him?
We have a really good
bond. Everyone looks for
us to be big at the net.
What do you do to
get yourself pumped
up and ready to play
before a match?
I listen to music. I like
a lot of classic bands
and Queen is my favorite.
I also like talking to
my teammates, clearing
my mind and just getting
ready to go out there.
What would your
spirit animal be?
A lion. That’s because
they’re composed. But
when it’s time to strike,
they will go out and get it
no matter what.
What have you
learned from Andrew
Jeff vorva/22nd century media
volleyball coach Emily
Connolly?
To take more of a leadership
role, especially with
the younger guys. She
trusts me to be the person
for them.
Are you going to
continue to play
volleyball in college?
No. I considered it but
I’m going for academics.
I might do intermural or
club volleyball though.
I’m going to Loyola University
in Chicago and will
major in biology.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Andrew?
We are always having
fun and a good time. The
bonds with the teams and
the coaches are always
good at Andrew.
POSTSEASON ROUNDUP
Now that’s more like it
T-Bolts head
back to state
tournament in
badminton
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Andrew is back in the
Illinois High School Association
state badminton
tournament.
Last year, the T-Bolts
were stunned not to have
a player or team qualify.
Since the IHSA began
tracking the tournament
on its website in 1997,
Andrew had at least one
representative each year
until the streak was halted
in 2018.
Singles player Nicole
Bath and the doubles team
of Elizabeth McDougall-
Anna Gawron made sure
that was not going to happen
again.
They qualified for the
43rd running of the state
tournament, which takes
place on Friday, May 10
and Saturday, May 11, at
Eastern Illinois University
in Charleston.
This tournament and the
boys gymnastics state meet
open a series of 13 spring
state championships which
will run through June 8.
McDougall-Gawron is
the first doubles team from
Andrew’s Elizabeth
McDougall teamed with
Anna Gawron to become
the first T-Bolt doubles
team since 2016 to qualify
for the state tournament.
Andrew to qualify for state
since 2016. They came up
with a second-place finish
at the Thornton Fractional
South Sectional on Thursday,
May 2 in Lansing.
After taking care of
business the first two
matches with a pair of
two-set wins, the team
dropped a championship
match to T.F. South’s Ashley
James-Paige Drewno,
21-9, 21-10.
Bath had some work to
do after dropping a second-round
battle with Oak
Forest’s Madeline Lewner
to send her to the consolation
bracket.
After winning a pair of
consolation matches, Bath
faced Lewner for a state
tournament bid and this
time came up with a 21-
16, 27-25 victory. She then
lost a 21-11, 12-21, 21-7
war with Oswego’s Britney
Sennes to take fourth
place.
Andrew took third place
in the meet with 9.5 points
behind Oswego (14 points)
and the hosts (13.5).
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Tinley Park High
School’s baseball team
won its first regional in 25
have enough players
on their squad from last
run at winning two in a
row.
The Illinois High School
Association released the
Soccer seeds
Could there be a D230
battle between Sandburg
and Andrew to determine
the Andrew Class 3A Sectional
championship in
girls soccer? That is what
the coaches are predicting.
Sandburg drew the No.
1 seed and Andrew, which
finished fourth in the state
last year, was seeded second.
Lincoln-Way Central
and Mother McAuley were
seeded third and fourth respectively.
Andrew opens the postseason
on at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
May 14 against Oak
Lawn at the Argo Regional.
In Class 2A, Tinley
No fallout from Fallot as Tholl overcomes heart problems
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Tinley Park’s Nate
Tholl was born with heart
problems, one kidney and
had three heart surgeries
performed by the time he
took his final class in third
grade.
“The doctors told my
parents [Bruce and Kathleen]
I was never going to
be able to play sports,” he
said. “My dad was a little
bit upset about that.”
In the Tinley Park and
Orland Park area, the name
Tholl is sports royalty, especially
on the baseball
and softball diamonds and
in the coaching ranks.
Despite having a heart
defect known as Tetralogy
of Fallot, Nate was
not particularly interested
in allowing the doctors’
predictions to come true.
He was determined to play
sports and play them for as
long as he could and add to
the Tholl legacy.
On April 28, at Andre’s
West Banquet Hall on
Old Highway 141 in Fenton
Missouri, a suburb of
St. Louis, the young man
whom doctors said would
not play sports earned
the Webster University
Inspiration Award at the
school’s athletics banquet.
At the time of the banquet,
the baseball star was hitting
a team-high .356 for
the Gorloks and was second
on the team in hits with
37 and stolen bases with
15, Earlier in April he was
named to the D3Baseball.
com Team of the Week for
hitting .700 in three games
against Iowa Wesleyan.
“Nate hasn’t let anything
stop him and he proves
that you can do anything
despite all the health obstacles
he has had to overcome
in his life,” Webster
Nate Tholl of Tinley Park has been a force for Webster University’s baseball team despite numerous health
problems. BREELYN CRAIG/WEBSTER SPORTS INFORMATION
coach Bill Kurich bragged
at the banquet.
Keep fighting
Tholl, who attended St.
Laurence High School,
said he tries to keep his
condition confidential because
he does not want
people to treat him different.
But those who
know the hell he has gone
through - especially those
closest to him - admire his
ability to thrive.
“Looking at him and
watching him play, you
would never know all
that he has been through,”
Kathleen said. “He has
always loved the game of
baseball and has passed
the love to his brother and
sister [Jake, a senior baseball
star at Trinity Christian
College and Kaitlin, a
junior softball standout at
Andrew].
“He has taught us all
how to never give up and
keep fighting for what you
love.”
Jake said he learned
some life lessons from
watching Nate.
“People always told him
he wasn’t going to be able
to do this and he wasn’t going
to be able to do that,”
Jake said. “For him to go
out there and play - and
not just play, but play well
- that’s something that was
awesome to see. I’ve seen
my brother go out throughout
his life and have this
major problem and conquer
it like it was nothing.
Some people today have
no clue that he has a heart
condition unless they play
with him.
“Ever since I was
younger, I realized that I
don’t have to play baseball,
it’s something I get
to do. Nate being in that
situation changed the way
I looked at the game. It’s
a privilege to be able to
play the game and practice.
Some people love the
game and can’t play. Being
able to see my brother go
out there and play and defy
the odds shows me how I
should play the game.”
Nate has tried to take
everything in stride. After
this first two surgeries at
ages eight weeks and eight
months, he took a break
from the scalpel for awhile
but needed a balloon procedure
done on his pulmonary
valve in third grade.
“When I was younger, I
thought nothing of it,” he
said. “When I had a surgery
in third grade, everyone
was freaking out. My
mom was crying. I didn’t
know what the big deal
was. I knew I would be
out in two to three hours. I
would be fine.”
Positive attitude
He is not out of the
woods.
Every year, Nate receives
an echocardiogram
just to see if the pulmonary
valve is still doing its
job correctly. Now that he
is older, he has a few more
concerns than he did back
in the carefree no-big-deal
era in third grade.
“Now when I go, I know
how serious and scary it
could be,” Nate said. “I’ve
been fine throughout all
the years. I have a positive
Nate Tholl
attitude. I always hope that
everything comes up for
the best.
“Until that day comes
when they tell me something
is going to happen,
I’m just going to hope everything
is fine.”
On the field, there is
more work to do. The Gorloks
won 26 of their first
35 games and were ranked
25th in two national polls
at the end of April and
hope to be playing in June
at the NCAA Division III
College World Series in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Off the field, he is preparing
to graduate with
a degree in business on
Saturday, May 9. The plan
is to try to earn a masters
degree at Webster and he
is crossing his fingers he
can land a job as an assistant
baseball coach at the
school.
When he looks back at
his career, Nate said his
problems were not all that
bad.
“It wasn’t too much
trouble,” he said. “Obviously
there are times when
I’m a little bit more tired
and I get drained a little
quicker. But I don’t think
it’s held me back. I think
I’m actually lucky. I feel
I’m a very lucky person to
be able to play sports and
to be able to play through
college. I don’t think it’s
been too big of an issue.”

Jeff Vorva
Sports Editor
Sports news in the
village of Tinley
Park is on a hot
streak.
We have had some
incredible cover stories in
the past couple of weeks
about wonderful things
going on not only on the
playing fields and courts
but in real life as well.
The cover story this week
on Nate Tholl is not too
shabby, either.
Some of the special
stories in TP have filtered
down to youth baseball as
well.
The Tinley Park Bulldogs’
8U baseball squad
opened its season heading
over the state border and
winning the Tomahawk
Tuneup in St. John, Indiana.
The team, consisting
of Charlie Wagner, Sarah
Aggen, Austin Neighbors,
Nathan Hesse, Gavin
Jurkovic, Drew Hullinger,
Ryan Metz, Logan Viau,
Jackson Harris, Cayden
Rasmason and Casey
Westin coached by Steve
Westin, Justin Viau, Scott
Hesse, went 4-0 in the
tournament.
And, get this, the
Bulldogs beat the Dyer
Dirtbags, 10-4 in the
championship game.
“Yes, that’s really their
name,” Steve Westin said.
“It was funny to hear fans
yelling ‘come on, Dirtbags!’
’’
But that’s not the best
part of the story.
The best part is that
money from the tournament
went to Jessie Hernandez,
a Lynwood police
sergeant who is battling
non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Herandez may not be
well known around here,
but he is one of those
guys who coaches middle
school basketball and is
a volunteer coach for the
St. John’s travel squad. He
has had low grade cancer
for years and now it has
spread past the lymph
nodes and is in his bone
marrow, spleen and liver
according to information
from the Cuffing Cancer
campaign. Money is going
to help pay for chemo
treatments.
The tournament that the
Bulldogs were in raised
close to $5,000 according
to Westin.
Perhaps the young
Bulldogs do not realize
what they have done.
Winning the trophy and a
championship is probably
the reward the boys are
enjoying the most.
When they get older,
they can look back and
remember not only winning
a championship but
The Tinley Park Bulldogs 8U team won a tournament in Indiana which raised money
for Jessie Hernandez, a Lynwood police sergeant who has cancer. PHOTO SUBMITTED
Heading to nationals
Some members of the
Moraine Valley Community
College men’s tennis
team will participate in
the National Junior College
Athletics Association
Division I national tournament
starting on Monday,
May 13 in Tucson,
Arizona.
The Cyclones have
a heavy Andrew High
School presence. The first
singles player is sophomore
Nick Karczynski,
who finished second in the
Region IV tennis tournament
on April 27, hosted
by Moraine in Palos Hills.
Andrew grads John
McGuire and Sean
McKernan are also on the
roster. The assistant coach
is Andrew’s boys and girls
coach Mike Maratea.
Nick Karczynski, an Andrew graduate, has helped
Moraine Valley’s tennis team qualify for nationals.
PHOTO COURTESY OF MORAINE VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Speaking of Moraine...
Andrew basketball player
Kirsten Kamholz committed
to Moraine and will
play for Delwyn Jones,
whose team qualified for
nationals for the third time
in school history earlier
this year.
Not to put any pressure
on anyone, but the last
time Jones signed up a
player from coach Bobby
Matz’s stable of talent
is was Michelle Borgen,
who was one of the top
center/forwards in the
country. She helped get the
Cyclones to the national
tournament for the second
time in school history in
2017 and this season averaged
17.2 points and 8.4
rebounds for Indiana University
Northwest, which
made it to the round of
16 of the NAIA National
Division II Tournament.
