Titans aiming for second straight
regional crown in baseball
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Tinley Park High
School’s baseball team
won its first regional in 25
years last year and the Titans
have enough players
on their squad from last
year to make a legitimate
run at winning two in a
row.
The Illinois High School
Association released the
assignments for baseball
and softball and the Titans
are in Sub-Sectional
B of the Class 3A Ottawa
Sectional. Other teams
in the sub-sectional are
state powerhouse St. Laurence,
Thornton Fractional
North, Chicago (Agricultural
Science) Morgan
Park, Hillcrest, Thornridge,
Evergreen Park,
Lemont, Bremen and Oak
Forest.
The seeds were scheduled
to come out Tuesday,
May 7.
In Class 4A, Andrew is
at the Lockport Sectional
and will host its own regional.
In softball, Tinley Park
will be in Sub-Sectional A
of the Joliet Catholic Sectional.
In Class 4A, Andrew
was placed in the 19-team
Thornwood Sectional.
Bickel wins two
Andrew junior John
Bickel won the 100- and
200-meter dashes at the
Bill Jackson Invitational at
Lockport High School on
Friday, May 3. He claimed
the 100 in :10.86 seconds
and the 200 in :22.11. Although
Plainfield North
was in the meet, Class 4A
defending 100 and 200
state champ Marcellus
Tinley Park’s Julian Vargas and his teammates are
gunning for another regional title. JEFF VORVA/22ND
Tinley Park’s Rebecca
Beltran won the discus
with a throw of 109-feet,
05.50-inches in the South
Suburban Conference at
Lemont on Thursday, May
2 in Lemont. Last year
she finished seventh in the
state in Class 2A in that
event.
Elmhurst recruit Anna
Kovats won a conference
title in the 3,200-meter run
with a 12 minute, :05.41
second showing. Brooke
Davis won the 300 hurdles
with a :49.61. Lilly Johnson
Soccer seeds
Could there be a D230
battle between Sandburg
and Andrew to determine
the Andrew Class 3A Sectional
championship in
girls soccer? That is what
the coaches are predicting.
Sandburg drew the No.
1 seed and Andrew, which
finished fourth in the state
last year, was seeded second.
Lincoln-Way Central
and Mother McAuley were
seeded third and fourth respectively.
Andrew opens the postseason
on at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
May 14 against Oak
Lawn at the Argo Regional.
In Class 2A, Tinley
Park drew the fifth seed
at the Rich East Sectional
and will face 12th-seeded
Richards at 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday, May 14 in the
Oak Forest Regional.
Volleyball seeds
Andrew drew the eighth
seed in the Marist Sectional
and will open play
at 6:30 p.m. on May 20
against 25th-seeded Chicago
(Agricultural Science).
Tinley Park drew the
22nd seed and will play
12th-seeded Lemont at
7:30 p.m. May 20. Tinley
Park is in its second year
of sponsoring boys volleyball
and the Titans first win
in program history came
against Lemont earlier this
year in the Homewood-
Flossmoor Tournament.
