IN THAILAND 

JobsDB Thailand, a leading 

employment portal, has made an 

analysis of the top paying jobs in its 

“Thailand Salary Report 2018” 

Not surprisingly, e-commerce 

jobs were topping the list as the 

industry shows continued sky-high 

growth. This is in keeping with the 

fact that e-commerce and IT professionals 

were the most sought after 

people compared to people in other 

job sectors. 

The report pulled in its data 

from 50,000 employers. On a broad 

range of metrics, similar jobs by industry 

and job level brought in similar 

incomes compared to the year 

prior, showing very low or event 

stagnant wage growth overall. 

Lower level e-commerce jobs 

showed an average starting salary 

of 21.787 to 37,181baht per 

month compared to around 20,000 

to 31,428 baht per month for other 

industries. 

Supervisors in the e-commerce 

space can expect to secure a package 

worth 35,885 baht per month. 

E-commerce digital marketing managers 

came in at the top spot for 

all manager leveljobs, and could 

expect to receive a salary in the 

range of 55,738 to 94,842 baht per 

month. At the very top, high-level 

experienced personnel can expect 

to earn as much as 145,000 baht 

per month. 

Other industries were also considered 

as top payers. Insurance 

executives in the position of “Head 

of Insurance Operations” came in at 

a close second position with a salary 

range of 55,102 to 94,365 baht 

per month. The highest salaries at 

the top-level included technology, 

engineering and medical services 

posts and paid around 140,000 baht 

per month. 

Other management positions 

that were in the top ten list included 

legal consultant, supply chain consultant, 

human resources manager, 

international business manager, 

regional account manager and accounting 

and finance manager. 

At the lower, “officer”, level, 

where many begin their employment 

journey, top paying positions 

included translator and business 

analyst officer, business development 

officer, software development 

officer, programmer, IT developer, 

insurance officer, pharmacist, brand 

manager, doctor, and energy or 

chemical engineer. 

Although there may not be a 

correlating effect to salary levels, 

the most needed job functions in 

Thailand were sales and business 

development at 17 per cent, e-commerce 

and information technology 

at 12 per cent, engineering at 10 per 

cent personnel and human resources 

positions at 9 per cent. 

Less sought after positions included 

those in the public relations 

and marketing sector at eight per 

cent, banking andfinance at five per 

cent, food and beverage, travel and 

hospitality at four per cent and both 

transport and manufacturing,also at 

around four percent each. 

Other traits that employers look 

out for include a positive attitude, 

confidence in managing digital platforms, 

good communication skills, 

multi tasking abilities and being 

open to changing and learning new 

things.

IN PATTAYA? 

Formerly a quiet and peaceful fishing village, Pattaya began to grow 

when the American GIs stationed in Vietnam chose it as one of their 

privileged places to enjoy their permissions. To cope with the growing 

amount of visitors, restaurants, bungalows and hotels gradually

Today, the city officially has a population 

of just over 350,000 inhabitants, but in

on the real estate sector, whether residential 

or aiming rental incomes, allowing 

Pattaya to become one of the spearheads 

of the country in the real estate sector. Indeed 

like the country, Pattaya has undeniable 

assets allowing it to become a place 

where it is good to invest in real estate,

The reflection of a highly attractive country 

Before speaking of Pattaya in particular, 

it is worthwhile to dwell for a few 

moments on the dynamism of Thailand in 

general and its undeniable attractiveness

Pattaya, an increasingly attractive destination 

Indeed, in recent years, the government 

has clearly shown its intention to turn 

Pattaya, renowned for its nightlife and wild 

nights, into a perfect family destination to

actions to limit pollution, more frequent controls

already in place to allow Pattaya to unleash

etc.), Pattaya is probably the only destination 

in the Kingdom offering a superb and

a dynamic city and a quiet seaside resort. 

Pattaya is also a city where you will 

find high quality infrastructures with an 

efficient road network allowing a smooth 

traffic, current and under construction highways 

allowing an easy and fast connection 

between Pattaya and the surrounding cities 

(Bangkok, Chonburi, Si Racha, Rayong, 

etc. .), a high-speed train project to connect 

Pattaya to Bangkok in just 30 minutes, 

a tramway project to improve transportation 

in the city center, an ever-expanding 

airport that welcomes more and more 

flights, including international, deep-water 

ports to increase the transport of goods, 

and people. Pattaya also hosts several 

high quality hospitals, the most famous being 

the Bangkok Hospital. 

Pattaya is full of activities for all tastes 

and ages. In fact, you’ll find everything you 

need, from the famous Walking Street with 

its lively bars and nightclubs to Na Jomtien

A strong economy 

In addition to these very important 

aspects, Pattaya is also not left behind in 

terms of economy. Indeed, it occupies a 

central position on the Eastern Economic 

Corridor (EEC), an investment plan of 

more than 1.5 billion THB (47 million USD) 

aiming to develop the infrastructure in 

the region (Chachoengsao, Chonburi and 

Rayong provinces): airports, deep-water 

ports, high-speed trains, highways, etc. allowing 

Pattaya to improve its accessibility 

for the transport of goods and people. Secondly, 

the objective of the EEC is to attract 

major economic players in the area thanks 

to newly renovated and improved infrastructures, 

the creation of free trade zones 

and by offering them other numerous advantages, 

especially related to taxes and 

employment. The operation has already attracted 

several multinationals such as Airbus, 

which is partnering with Thai Airways 

to create the largest maintenance center 

in South East Asia, or the E-commerce giant 

player, Alibaba which is investing more 

than 300 million USD to develop several 

facilities including a logistics center to link 

China and Thailand, a research and development 

complex, and a university project. 

It is also worth recalling the importance 

of tourism, which occupies a major role in 

Pattaya. Indeed, every year, the city welcomes 

more than 10 million international 

visitors, having made it the 14th most visited 

city in the world in 2018, in front of 

heavyweights like Milan, Hong Kong, Barcelona 

or Bali. The profiles are very varied 

among them with tourists from all around 

the world visiting Pattaya for a few days or 

for do several months. This makes it even 

more interesting when talking about investing 

in Pattaya real estate market in order to 

capitalize on this massive influx of visitors

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH 

VIRTUAL REALITY? 

By now, virtual reality (VR) has probably made it on to 

your radar screen in some way. Maybe you’ve only heard 

about it in bits and pieces, or maybe you’ve tried it yourself. 

Whatever the case, virtual reality feels like it could 

be the new generation of advanced technology. 

Virtual Reality (VR) literally 

makes it possible to experience 

anything, anywhere, anytime 

So – Virtual Reality, a definition 

A realistic three-dimensional im 

age or artificial environment that is 

created with a mixture of interactive 

hardware and software, and presented 

to the user in such a way that 

the any doubts are suspended and 

it is accepted 

as a real environment in which it is 

interacted with in a seemingly real or 

physical way. 

Virtual reality is best understood 

by first defining what it aims to 

achieve – total immersion. 

Total immersion means that the 

sensory experience feels so real, 

that we forget it is a virtual-artificial 

environment and begin to interact 

with it as we would naturally in the 

real world. In a virtual reality environment, 

a completely synthetic 

world may or may not mimic the 

properties of a real-world environment. 

This means that the virtual 

reality environment may simulate 

an everyday setting (e.g. walking 

around the streets of London), or 

may exceed the bounds of physical 

reality by creating a world in which 

the physical laws governing gravity, 

time and material properties no longer 

hold (e.g. shooting space aliens 

on a foreign gravity-less planet). 

Key Elements of a Virtual Reality 

Experience 

1. Virtual World 

A virtual world is a three-dimensional 

environment that is often, but 

not necessarily, realized through 

one or more technologies, such as 

head sets, gloves etc where one can 

interact with others and create objects 

as part of that interaction. In a 

virtual world, visual perspectives are 

responsive to changes in movement 

and interactions mimic those experienced 

in the real world. 

- Mental Immersion – A deep 

mental state of engagement, with 

suspension of disbelief that one is in 

a virtual environment. 

- Physical Immersion – Exhibited 

physical engagement in a virtual 

environment, with suspension of 

disbelief that one is in a virtual environment. 

3. Sensory Feedback 

Virtual reality requires as many 

of our senses as possible to be simulated. 

These senses include vision, 

hearing, touch, and more, for example 

smell. Properly stimulating these 

sense requires sensory feedback, 

which is achieved through integrated 

hardware and software which 

include head mounted displays 

(HMD), special gloves or hand accessories, 

and hand controls. 

4. Interactivity 

The element of interaction is crucial 

for virtual reality experiences to 

provide users with enough comfort 

to naturally engage with the virtual 

environment. If the virtual environment 

responds to a user’s action in 

a natural manner, excitement and 

senses of immersion will remain. If 

the virtual environment cannot respond 

quickly enough, the human 

brain will quickly notice and the 

sense of immersion will diminish. 

Virtual environment responses to interaction 

can include the way a participant 

moves around or changes 

in their viewpoint; generally through 

movements of their head.

2. Immersion 

Virtual reality immersion feeling 

physically present in a non-physical 

world. It encompasses the sense of 

presence, which is the point where 

the human brain believes that is 

somewhere it is really not, and is 

accomplished through purely mental 

and/or physical means. The 

state of total immersion exists when 

enough senses are activated to create 

the perception of being present 

in a non-physical world. Two common 

types of immersion include: 

Most people relate to VR in terms 

of gaming, but in fact the scope for 

use is much wider. For example, it 

has already been demonstrated that 

a specialist surgeon in say London, 

can perform an operation on a patient 

anywhere in the world using VR 

and robots. 

I guess a holo-deck as seen in 

Start Trek would be the ultimate 

VR experience …. And may be we 

aren’t that far off!

Genomics is a specialist branch 

of science that focuses on the structure, 

evolution, function, editing and 

mapping of genomes. Not to be confused 

with genetics, which is a study 

of individual genes and amongst 

other things how they are inherited, 

genomics is concerned with the 

entire set of DNA of an organism. It 

encompasses DNA sequencing and 

bioinformatics to collectively understand 

biological data. 

The studies have great potential 

to stop diseases and to eradicate 

a number of medical conditions, 

which still persist today. There have 

been many leaps in the field in recent 

years but as new technology is 

developed the pace is only likely to 

accelerate. 

Genomics is at the forefront 

of microbiology and is one of the 

high-technology sectors endorsed 

under the government’s Eastern 

Economic Corridor (EEC) project. 

As such, approval was given by the 

cabinet to develop the genomics 

sector during the period of 2020 to 

2024 with an injection of up to 4.5 

billion baht, in order to give Thailand 

a competitive edge in the industry. 

The EEC project will see Thailand 

become a center of excellence 

for Genomics and related industries. 

Nathporn Chatusripitak, a 

spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister 

Somkid Jatusripitak, was quoted 

as saying, "Genomics is a significant 

technology that can help develop 

Thailand as the region's medical hub. 

The action plan should help draw private 

investment and joint ventures 

between government agencies and 

potential private firms," adding, "The 

EEC Office needs to team up with 

the Board of Investment to work out 

plans to promote the industry and 

encourage related agencies to conduct 

R&D and private investment." 

Genomics really can help to save 

a great deal of money in the medium 

to long term as it can be the foundation 

for understanding serious 

medical conditions and can be the 

building block for new drugs to combat 

diseases. 

It is estimated that savings of up 

to 70 billion baht per year could be 

made based on strides in the understandingof 

just five key conditions 

(cancer, HIV, diabetes, stroke and 

acute coronary syndrome). As other 

conditions are targeted, they could 

collectively increase the savings by 

a considerable margin. 

In a related development the 

cabinet also approved a 34.83 billion 

baht budget for the medical doctor 

development program, which aims 

to increase the number of doctors in 

Thailand to a ratio of 1 per 1200 head 

of population. In the first three years 

9,168 doctors will be developed with 

a further 15,394 from 2022 to 2027. 



THAILAND BUSINESS NEWS 

MARRIOTT TO INCREASE 

ITS NUMBER OF HOTELS 

IN THAILAND 

Marriott International, which currently owns 44 

hotels in Thailand, plans to expand markedly the 

number of hotels it owns in the Kingdom. A 50 per 

cent increase is being eyed over the next 3 or 4 

years. More than half of the new properties will 

be resorts and will cater to both Thai guests and 

Chinese tourists who now make up nearly 30 per 

cent and 25 per cent of Marriot’s customer base 

respectively. 

Marriot International has 14 brands under its 

belt. Now under construction are a number of new 

properties under brands such as Delta by Marriott, 

Fairfield by Marriott and Moxy. 

The move comes as the company is already 

maintaining an expansion phase. Throughout the 

APAC region the company owns 710 hotels and 

hopes to increase this number to above 1000 by 

2020. 

Rajeev Menon, chief operating officer of Marriott 

International Asia-Pacific, was quoted as 

saying, "We don't really see it as an acceleration 

from our perspective," adding, "Marriott acquired 

Starwood Hotels in 2016, which had a larger presence 

than us in Asia at the time, and as we came 

together we have had a very healthy pipeline of 

new hotels in Asia." 

The company is unfazed by occasional shortterm 

blips in Thailand’s economic outlook. 

Mr. Menon was also quoted as saying, "We've 

seen business slow down dramatically, but the incredible 

thing about Thailand is it always bounces 

back quickly. As long as we have political stability 

and economic stability, people want to keep coming 

back." 

OCCUPANCY RATES FOR 

FACTORIES AND WAREHOUSES 

SET TO RISE 

According to SET listed Frasers Property, demand 

for ready built factory space and warehouse 

space is on the rise with the e-commerce sector 

in particular driving business activity with regard 

to the latter. The industrial real estate developer 

is looking to increase occupancy rates to 80 per 

cent during 2019, up from 73 per cent in the previous 

year. 

President, Sopon Racharaksa, was quoted 

as saying, "Leasehold industrial property development 

continues its upward trend with favorable 

factors including increased trade and domestic 

consumption, economic drivers surrounding Thailand 

4.0 policy and tremendous growth of e-commerce,” 

adding, "We are confident our goal for 

fiscal 2019 of total occupancy for ready-built factories 

and warehouses of 80% will be achievable.” 

SUMMER POWER DEMAND 

EXPECTED TO SPIKE 

With the summer months on their way, and 

with temperatures expected to reach potential 

highs of up to 42 to 43 degrees centigrade, power 

demand is expected to rise as air conditioning is 

used more. 

Usage is expected to peak at up to 35,889 

megawatts, an increase of 4.6 per cent per cent 

on last year’s summer season. 

However, Thailand’s power generation capabilities 

remain well poised to take up the challenge 

with more than a large buffer zone already 

in place. 

Sarawut Kaewtathip, deputy permanent energy 

secretary, was quoted as saying, “Demand 

during the peak will not affect the country's total 

power generation as reserves of 56,034MW remain 

20% higher than the demand projection.” 

Summer temperatures are keenly watched 

since for every 1 degree of temperature rise, an 

additional 400MW of power is required. Currently 

consumers use approximately 20 per cent of all 

power, businesses use 22 per cent and industry 

accounts for more than 40 per cent.

from overseas.

be in your name, it cannot 

be in your wife or girlfriend’s 

name or a joint account. If

You can either ask your 

pension provider to pay 

your pension directly into 

your Thai bank account. For 

this purpose you will need 

to ask the bank to provide 

you with a Swift or IBAN 

code suitable for international transfers. 

We suggest trialling an overseas 

transfer before you commit to 

receiving monthly payments in this 

account. 

We suggest this for two reasons, 

#1 to make sure that everything is 

working correctly and #2 to check 

on the exchange rate. Depending on 

the bank which your pension provider 

uses to transfer the money you 

may not get the best exchange rate 

possible. 

The alternative to this is continue 

to receive your pension into your 

local bank account in your home 

country and then transfer it yourself 

to Thailand. 

This should be done by electronic 

transfer and if you have online 

banking, this is normally a simple 

process. Depending on your bank 

account, you may need a card reader 

or phone number which can be 

used for verifying the international 

Different banks have different 

systems and use different exchange 

rates. In the UK, international transfers 

typically vary between £9 and 

£20 and there is usually a mark up 

on the exchange rate plus bank fees 

from the receiving bank here in Thailand.

from abroad to Thailand or any other

TENCENT CHOOSES THAILAND AS 

ITS FIRST OVERSEAS MARKET 

Tencent, the well known Chinese 

internet company has decided to 

choose Thailand as the destination of 

its first foray into overseas markets 

for its video-on-demand services. It 

aims to provide Line TV and Netflix 

as well as other streaming services. 

In addition to the video segment, the 

company will also expand its presence 

in cloud computing and AI services. 

Krittee Manoleehagul, managing 

director of Tencent Thailand Co., was 

quoted as saying, “This year, Tencent 

Thailand will invest in new business 

services to build a new engine of 

growth for corporate users apart from 

its strength in consumer businesses,” 

adding, “This will enable Tencent to 

serve corporate customers in Thailand 

in line with our global direction 

expanding into more industry-based 

solutions.” 

Already last year the company invested 

hundreds of millions of baht 

to build new data centers in the Kingdom. 

Li Kaichen, director of strategy 

development of Tencent Group and 

head of Tencent's overseas video 

business, was quoted as saying, 

"Tencent selected Thailand as the 

first country to expand the Tencent 

Video service outside China," adding, 

"In Asean, Thailand and Indonesia 

are two strategic countries for 

Tencent and the company has a lot of 

consumer business in Thailand that it 

can leverage faster.” 

Tencent considered that Thailand's 

high income per household 

was a key reason for the choice as 

well as the fact that there are many 

Chinese tourists in Thailand that may 

benefit from Chinese content. 

The company started its video 

streaming business in 2011, which 

included the setting up of its own film 

studios, Tencent Penguin Pictures. 

The studio has been behind the creation 

of popular Chinese and international 

productions. 

Mr. Li was also quoted as saying, 

"We spent seven years to become 

the top video-streaming service in 

China with over 500 million active users 

per month, [and] with 82 million 

paid users as of September 2018," 

The company is enjoying record 

growth. Subscription revenue for video 

content rose 65 per cent in 2018. 

At the same time advertising revenues 

grew 21 per cent. 

After the start of the WeTV app 

late last year, the company expects 

that Thai content will increase with 

up to 20 Thai dramas expected on 

One Channel and many more in the 

pipeline. As well, U.S.,Chinese and 

Korean content will all increase. 

The company has tapped into 

popular Thai channels for customers 

including Sanook and Joox. 

Another reason for choosing 

Thailand is that on average Thais 

spend nearly 3 and a half hours per 

day watching streaming video, according 

to a recent “We Are Social” 

study.

Investment Visa is granted to 

qualified business people or investors 

who have the capacity to invest 

at least 10M Baht worth of real estate, 

deposits, or bonds in Thailand, 

which in return, provides the investors 

the right of residence or longterm 

stay in Thailand. 

This is structured to ensure that 

the investment contributes to the welfare, 

innovation and economic development 

of Thailand. There are three 

different options to invest the funds: 

1. Buying a condominium unit at 

a purchase price or rent of at least 10 

Million Baht. 

2. Holding the funds in a fixed deposit 

account at a Thai bank whose 

share capital is majority Thai owned. 

3. Buying or holding Thai government 

or Thai state enterprise bonds 

worth at least 10 Million Baht. 

Benefits 

• There are no age limitations, unlike 

the retirement visa that requires 

the individual to be aged 50 years or 

over. 

• It provides not only the investing 

party’s long-term stay in Thailand but 

also for their family members, such 

as parents, spouse and children. 

Qualifications 

You must be able to present the 

following: 

• Must have been granted a 

non-immigrant visa (NON-IM). 

• Evidence of transferring funds 

into Thailand of no less than 10 Million 

Baht. 

• Evidence of investing in the 

purchase or rental of a condominium 

unit for a period of no less than 3 

years issued by a relevant agency or 

government, at a purchase or rental 

price of no less than 10 Million Baht; 

or 

• Evidence of investing in the 

form of a fixed deposit of no less than 

10 Million Baht with a bank which is 

registered in Thailand and has Thai 

nationals holding more than 50 percent 

of its shares; or 

• Evidence of investing in the purchase 

of government or state enterprise 

bonds of no less than 10 Million 

Baht; or 

• Evidence of making an investment 

as set out in Criteria (3), (4), or 

(5) with a total value of not less than 

10 Million Baht. 

The different investment options 

above can be combined. Therefore it 

is possible to qualify for the Investment 

Visa by purchasing a condominium 

unit for less than 10Million 

Thai Baht and, in addition, deposit 

the balance of 10 Million Thai Baht to 

a fixed deposit account at a qualified 

Thai bank. 

Restrictions 

Holders of this type of visa are 

strictly prohibited to work in Thailand. 

Furthermore, you must report to the 

Immigration Office in your area of 

residence every 90 days during your 

stay in Thailand. During this period, 

you need to apply for and obtain a 

single or multiple re-entry permit at 

the Immigration office if you wish to 

leave and re-enter the country. Otherwise, 

the permit for you to stay for 

the rest of the visa duration will become 

invalid. 

Validity 

Once approved, the investor will 

be issued an initial three-month Visa. 

You must then take the same set of 

documents to immigration, within 

two weeks of its expiration date, for 

1-year extension. This can be renewed 

annually as long as you maintain 

the 10 Million Baht worth of real 

estate, deposits, or bonds.

Many clients come to us after 

working with other digital agencies 

and claim that they had a bad experience 

or weren’t happy with the 

agency for some reason.

keen to find out what went wrong so

in your own home! 

Luca Marchetti, the genial host of the Toscana Italian restaurant on Beach 

Road in central Pattaya, is very proud of the fact that he makes good use of 

the produce of his organic vegetable and natural animal farms for the meals 

that he serves to diners, and is happy to supply outside orders for non-diners. 

When you consider just how many 

restaurants there are in the Pattaya 

area, Toscana is arguably about 

the only one which can trace the vast 

majority of its food products from the 

‘soil to the table’ and the ‘cradle to the 

grave’ as it were. 

The commitment to providing genuine 

quality to diners is evidenced by 

the continuing popularity of both Toscana 

and its associated Moom Talay 

Thai restaurant. The key to running any 

successful business across the longer 

term is to have repeat custom, and 

that’s what Toscana certainly achieves. 

One aspect of the operation that 

many customers may not be aware of 

is the preparedness to sell a vast range 

of the produce of the two farms to customers 

who might want to get the Toscana 

food experience but not necessarily 

come in night after night to dine 

at the restaurant itself. 

A classic example would be the 

free-range eggs, whether the standard 

chicken eggs, or the more exotic quail 

or guinea fowl eggs. 

While the chicken eggs which Luca 

sells are 10 baht each, so 120 baht for 

the dozen, the quality is unmatched. As 

Luca points out, “The chickens people 

buy cheaply in the market have been 

fast-tracked to growth, maybe they’re 

a kilo in weight after only a month. My 

chickens are allowed to grow naturally 

and it takes my stock around six 

months to get to that size.” 

Obviously, a chicken grown as fast 

as possible in order to be sent to market 

in as short a time as possible is not 

going to cost as much as one which 

is allowed to mature naturally. So, the 

actual turnover of chicken numbers on 

Luca’s organic farm is far less than a 

standard commercial operation.

Being allowed to grow naturally, the 

hens are also allowed to lay eggs as 

naturally as possible. As Luca notes, 

it is easy to check the quality of an 

organically-farmed egg compared to 

its more production-line sibling. “Each 

organic egg will be slightly different in 

size and texture. When it’s broken open 

for eating the colours will vary slightly, 

all because of what the hen was eating 

before it laid the egg.” 

Luca said, “My chickens lay a lot 

less eggs than a typical factory-farmed 

chicken. So, yes I charge 10 baht 

an egg, compared to maybe 

3.5 baht for a factory 

chicken, but the difference 

is in the 

quality 

and, of course, the more natural vitamins 

and minerals which are in the 

eggs from my farm.” 

While hens will lay eggs all year 

round, “provided it’s not too hot or too 

cold,” according to Luca, guinea fowl 

only lay their eggs between March and 

September, as do pheasants and turkeys. 

Apart from chickens and their eggs, 

non-diners can order rabbit, quail, pigs 

and almost 

any product from the other creatures 

that Luca has on his farm. All 

of which gives you the opportunity to 

‘bring home the bacon’ as it were and 

dine Toscana-style in the comfort of 

your own home.

If you want to get away from it all and live 

in peaceful surroundings, but yet still enjoy 

everything that Pattaya has to offer, then 

Nong Pla Lai is a great place to live. 

Nong Pla Lai is a district that is situated 

to the north east of Pattaya city. At its western 

tip it is within 1km of the coast and runs 

parallel with the main Sukhumvit road that 

stretches northwards from Naklua. 

It is in this part of Nong Pla Lai, that Villa

Residents are very happy to have all the 

hustle and bustle of Pattaya a stone's throw

is just 7km away and there is easy access to 

Naklua Beach and North Pattaya. 

Within the district, residents are well catered 

for. There are a number of local shopping 

destinations such as Mini Big C and 

Lotus Express as well as a choice of great 

fresh markets. 

A range of International schools are also 

located in the vicinity including the very well 

regarded Regents International School, the 

International School of Chonburi, Ban Santikham 

Schooland the Maryvit School Pattaya, 

making Nong Pla Lai an ideal place for 

family living. 

For coffee shop lovers, Bianco Coffee 

and Bakery is located just 2 minutes away

Million years Stone Park and Pattaya crocodile 

farm, The Big Bee Farm and the Pattaya 

Sheep farm. Also worth a mention is 

the nearby Monster World and Aquarium, 

a huge place featuring an overhead walkthrough 

aquarium with sharks and big fish 

and another six outside zones, showcasing 

rare ponies, rabbits, tortoises and exotic parrots, 

amongst plenty of other animals - great 

for kids. 

For golfers, Siam Country Club is only 

around 15 minutes away providing seasoned 

players and beginners alike with a great local 

golf course that is internationally renowned. 

Since there is virtually no traffic congestion 

in the area it is easy to reach places of 

interest. This is great since it 

means that you are not affected by the high 

season that afflicts Pattaya city, where traffic 

can grind to a halt and make getting around 

difficult. Nong Pla Lai really is a 

hidden treasure.

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE 

TheU.S. Dollar gained ground 

even as the Federal Reserve re-iterated 

it had no plans to raise rates. 

However news that if could react either 

way as data came in supported 

the greenback. The DXY index, (an 

index that measures the U.S. Dollar’s 

value against a range 

of major currencies), rose 

slightly from 96.40 to 96.96 

after hitting a high of 97.42. 

Against the Thai Baht, the 

U.S. Dollar also rose by the 

same amount indicating 

that the Thai Baht has been 

relatively steady for the last 

month or so. The USD/THB 

rate moved from 31.61 to 

31.77. 

Where the British 

Pound is concerned, exhaustion 

appears to have 

settled in with a further Brexit delay 

keeping many to the sidelines. 

The Pound has remained broadly 

in the range of 1.2950 to 1.3150 to 

the US Dollar with the boundaries 

narrowing slightly. Dips towards 

1.2940 have been recently bought 

up, bringing the currency back into 

the range. Worth pointing out is that 

a flat market is one where there 

are an equal number of buyers and 

sellers and so there is really maximum 

disagreement about future 

direction of the currency. As such, a 

breakout in either direction could be 

quite sharp. Against the Thai Baht, 

the pound reached a high of 

41.91 but has mainly been flat at 

around 41.50 for most of the last 

month. 

The U.S. Dollar vs. Japanese 

Yen cross-rate has seen a little 

more volatility than other currency 

pairs, with trade reaching a low 

of 109.84 before rebounding to 

112.06. Most of this move can be 

attributable to the Yen itself, with its 

safe haven status unwinding in the 

face of a stronger than expected 

U.S. earnings season. Against the 

Thai Baht, the Yen rose very slightly 

from 0.2815 to 0.2868 only to then 

settle back to 0.2815. 

The Russian Ruble moved from 

63.80 to 65.60 to the US Dollar, and 

then reversed course to return to 

the 64.00 handle. This move shows 

a slightly increased level of volatility 

but it is still muted compared to the 

Russian currency’s medium term 

movements. Against the Thai baht 

the Ruble strengthened slightly 

from 0.491 to 0.498 after dropping 

to a low of 0.476. 

The Euro vs. the U.S. Dollar 

cross-rate saw a high of 

1.1410 and a low of a 1.1195, 

however it settled in the middle 

of the range at 1.1306. 

Continuation of European 

Central Bank stimulus and a 

dovish stance from ECB President 

Mario Draghi did little to 

move the currency, with most 

of the news already baked 

in. Less volatility was seen 

against the Thai Baht with 

the rate moving from 35.84 to 

35.59 and then back to 35.87.

AIRLINE TO SELL STAKE 

If you have traveled to Singapore 

recently then you may well have noticed 

a lot of construction work going 

on at a huge site near to the airport 

terminals. Well, the construction is 

complete and the airport operators 

have unveiled a new mega mall complex 

called “The Jewel Changi Airport”. 

The building covers 135,700 

square meters over 10 stories and 

cost some S$2.3 billion. Within the 

complex there are 280 restaurants, 

gourmet food outlets and retail shops. 

The interior has been designed 

with nature in mind and includes a 

rain forest and the largest indoor waterfall 

in the world. 

The complex is connected to 

terminals 1, 2 and 3 and has been 

created with the aim of appealing to 

transit passengers. 

Sabrina Stefani, a visitor who 

was able to see the new mall at a 

pre-opening event was quoted as 

saying, “Singapore is always trying 

to be in the forefront of technology 

and has its own definition for airports. 

This is not just an airport but is really 

like a masterpiece in architecture, 

and in greenery and landscape.” 

While bar charts, line graphs and 

simple numbers are hardly capable of 

providing the defining answer to many 

economic, social and political questions, 

they are certainly a good way 

of obtaining a general overview of any 

particular subject.

TOP 20 BUSIEST 

SHIPPING PORTS 

ARE IN ASIA 

Certainly some interesting facts 

emerge when it comes to looking at 

shipping ports across the world. They 

are of course the lifeblood of international 

trade with more than 90 per cent 

of all products in the world at some 

point having travelled by sea. 

Shipping volumes are enormous 

and growing fast. One standard measurement 

is the TEU, which stands for 

“Twenty-foot or Equivalent Unit”, i.e. a 

standard shipping container. A 40-foot 

container, also ubiquitous these days, 

is equivalent to 2 TEUs. 

Trade amongst the top 50 ports has 

increased nearly 8 per cent in the last 

4 years with 5.86 million TEUs being 

shipped worldwide. 

Yet it is data on the top 20 ports 

that make for some interesting reading. 

Only 3 are in Europe and only one is in 

the U.S. (Los Angeles). The rest are in 

pact as early as mid 2019, once the 

deal is ratified. 

The EU-Vietnam free trade 

agreement (EVFTA) will see tariffs 

cut on 99 per cent of products coming 

into and out of Vietnam and could 

make Thailand’s exports less competitive, 

at least for a time. Around two-thirds

and 6 of these are in the top 10 including 

Shenzhen in 3rd place, Ningbo-Zhoushan 

in 4th place, Hong Kong 

in 6th place, Guangzhou harbour in 7th 

place and Qingdao in 8th position.

Guangzhou and Ningbo-Zhoushan 

have seen a 28 per cent growth rate in 

the period with current volumes of 21.6 

million and 18.9 million TEUs respectively. 

The highest growth rate (34%) 

was also in China at Xiamen port where 

9.6 million TEUs were handled. 

Other ports in the top 20 in Asia (but 

not in China) include Port Klang in Malaysia, 

Busan in South Korea, Keihin in 

Japan, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. 

INBOUND TOURISM 

NUMBERS GROWING 

STEADILY IN ASIA 

Tourism continues to grow in the 

Asia Pacific region with Thailand being 

just one of many countries enjoying a 

brisk uptick in tourist numbers. 

In South East Asia, from 2013 to

US$18.35 billion. 

Singapore was a close third in terms 

of visitor numbers with 19.23 million visitors 

in 2017, however their spending hit 

US$19.71 billion. 

Indonesia saw more than twice the 

number of visitors than the Philippines 

did with the two countries receiving 

14.04 million tourists and 7.13 million 

tourists respectively in 2017. In Indonesia 

they spent collectively US$10.3 

billion whilst in the Philippines the total 

was US$8.35 billion, indicating the 

amount per head was higher. 

In the next 5 years, Asia Pacific 

inbound tourist numbers are expected 

to rise by another 5.5 per cent, with 

Vietnam, Laos and Papua New Guinea 

seeing much higher rises of 14 percent, 

12.3 per cent and 12.7 per cent respectively.
