THAI COMPANIES TO FOCUS ON

THEIR SUPPLY CHAINS USING DIGITAL

TECHNOLOGY AND FLEXIBLE WORKFORCES

Supply chain weaknesses

have been laid bare as

a result of the Covid-19 era

and many companies were

unable to react in time.

According to an EY study

entitled “Investing in Southeast

Asia: Reimagining

manufacturing and supply

chains”, companies based

in Thailand and elsewhere

in South East Asia need

to rethink and adjust their

supply chain arrangements

before being able to grow

again.

Narisara Phatanaphibul,

Consulting Leader, EY Thailand,

was quoted as saying,

“Thai supply chains have

always adapted themselves

as they’ve faced many challenges

arising from national

policies and global

trade tensions. However,

COVID-19 is a driving force

for business leaders to redesign

their supply chains

with a focus on responsiveness

to rapidly changing

conditions, reconfiguration

on accelerated digital transformation,

and developing

the resilience to achieve

sustainable growth. So, the

supply chain is becoming

more strategic than before.”

The study outlined several

areas where improvements

can be made, chief

amongst them were digital

enablement and workforce

restructuring.

With regard to digital enablement,

companies can

improve flexibility and react

faster to market movements

by using a range of new digital

technology platforms.

Up skilling workforces

and retraining employees to

think strategically can also

help to minimize delay in

dealing with supply chain

shocks.

Narisara was also quoted

as saying, “The pandemic

has dramatically shifted

business patterns, and it is

important that Thai supply

chains are well-prepared

to harness long-term economic

potential when the

pandemic becomes endemic.

The key to success is

to tailor their strategies by

adopting new technologies

that instills more transparency

and agility in the

entire value chain, and investing

in people to deliver

strong performance and to

enhance resilience.”

In a recent survey, “The

Business Pulse Survey

2021: Thailand Report -

Living with COVID-19 and

winning together”, it was

revealed that up to 45% of

Thai business leaders said

that their supply chains had

been affected negatively

due to loss of suppliers and

higher cost of transportation

and raw materials.

Narisara was further

quoted as saying, “This

is a good time for companies

to incorporate digitalization

into the supply

chain for greater efficiency.

The supply chain intelligence

platforms with

end-to-end visibility, cloud

data collection, and real-time

models will enhance

traceability, offer

full visibility, and provide

accurate data for all ecosystem

partners who will

have to make decisions.

Ultimately, this will reduce

the risk of encountering

unexpected incidents, or

if an incident occurs, give

companies the ability to

easily and quickly handle

it,” adding, “While companies

look to reconfigure

their supply chain processes,

they should also

strive for a match between

digital implementation and

the workforce’s digital capabilities.

As new roles

emerge and skills needed

change, the existing pool

of highly skilled workers is

not big enough to respond

to demand. To address the

problem, companies must

invest more in enabling

their workforce to reskill,

set up plans for workforce

building, and harness

technology to enable

lifelong learning in order

to create their own highly

skilled digital-ready professionals.”

BUSINESSES NEED TO STRENGTHEN

THEIR ONLINE DEFENSES

The war in Ukraine and its diplomatic

conflict with the west continue

to escalate, the warnings that Russian

hackers could go after foreign

businesses have gained new urgency.

Businesses should strengthen

their online defenses, as cyberattacks

could be used as a means of

escalating the crisis. In a March 18

advisory to US businesses the FBI

warned that hackers linked to Russian

internet addresses have been

scanning the networks of five US energy

companies.

And experts have warned of 'significant'

vulnerabilities in systems

that Russian hackers can exploit, as

evidenced by attacks last year that

breached Florida's water supply, hit

one of the world's largest meat producers

and shut down one of America's

largest fuel pipelines for several

days.

Here's what businesses can do to

better protect themselves.

Updates, patches and backups

It may sound like an obvious and

straightforward fix, but experts say

keeping your system's software up

to date is an important way to prevent

many attacks. Those software

updates will often include security

patches to fix loopholes that hackers

can and do exploit.

"It's like raising the cost for the

adversary... if I make it a little harder,

they go on to the next victim," said

the Cyber Readiness Institute, which

provides resources for businesses to

shore up their cyber defenses.

Multi-factor authentication, which

supplements passwords with an additional

login method such as a numbered

code from a separate device or

a fingerprint scan, is also becoming

something of a must-have for companies

to secure potential entry points

into their networks.

It's important for businesses to

also have a contingency plan in case

they do get attacked, and one of the

best ways to do that is having backups

of critical or sensitive data stored

outside the system.

"Can I restore operations from

my data backups if I go down? Do

I have an alternate way to do business?"

the institute says "Those are

the business resiliency, the continuity

plans that small businesses have to

have, and in the middle of the crisis is

not the time to find out I have a gap."

Cyber insurance

As the risk of cyberattacks increases

— particularly ransomware

attacks that can extract millions of

dollars to restore systems — companies

are increasingly opting for additional

insurance plans that can help

pay for damages and losses from

cyberattacks.

Demand for cyber insurance has

gone up in recent years, according to

providers and industry experts, driving

up premiums for those plans by

as much as 22% between 2019 and

2020. But for companies that can

afford it, it's a good way to not only

protect against damages but also

to keep them more vigilant against

threats in the first place.

'This is different': Why internet

backbone services are cutting off

Russia

Cyber insurance is becoming extremely

expensive, but also kind of

levying requirements on businesses

to make sure that they're covered

and protecting themselves as well

highlighting that insurance firms will

often have a list of questions companies

have to answer and protections

they must have in place to even qualify

for a plan.

But companies should be wary of

treating cyber insurance as the beall

and end-all of protection against

attacks, Evans warns. Companies

need to evaluate their risk and make

systemic changes regardless of

whether they're protected after the

fact.

It's not necessarily: 'Oh, I bought

cyber insurance and I'm done,'".

To complicate matters further

when it comes to Russian cyberattacks,

insurance companies often

have clauses making exceptions for

acts of war and attacks by nation

states, in which case the policy does

not apply.

Employee awareness

Although companies must protect

themselves at the network and system

level, past precedent shows that

attacks can originate from even a single

compromised device, account or

email address.

Three of the four pillars of cyber

protection that the Cyber Readiness

Institute urges companies to address

— weak passwords, external USB

drive usage and phishing attacks

(where hackers use deceptive links

to obtain personal data) — tend to

exploit individual users.

When you look across the board,

it's a culture change that has to happen.

No matter what the size of an

organization is — it's the leadership,

it's the CEO, it then cascades down

to all the employees."

Ultimately, many cyber vulnerabilities

come down to human error and

lapses in judgment, and that's why

companies need to raise awareness

among employees about cyberattacks

and steps to mitigate them. The

rise of remote work during the pandemic

has further complicated that

task, with distributed workforces providing

hackers with many more potential

entry points into the network.

May be it’s time to review your

preperations!

THAI GOVERNMENT

FULLY SUPPORTS

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The government has reiterated

its support for electric

vehicles (EV’s) and the EV

industry alike.

Government spokesman

Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana

was quoted as saying,

"As part of that, the government

now has a policy of not

only supporting the increasing

use of electric vehicles

in the country but to likewise

make Thailand a hub for

producing electric cars and

motorbikes in the ASEAN region.”

Although the ambition is

to become the “Detroit of

Asia” from the manufacturing

and export standpoint,

the government is also firmly

focused on cutting carbon

emissions in Thailand, by

ensuring that sales of EVs

to local customers increase

rapidly.

THAILAND BUSINESS NEWS

To support EV use, the

Metropolitan Electricity Authority

(MEA) unveiled plans

to add at least 100 more MEA

EV chargers in Nonthaburi,

Samut Prakan and Bangkok

by the end of 2022. There is

also a push to install many

more EV charging stations in

other provinces.

Subsidies to the tune of

3 billion baht have been set

aside by the Excise Department

that will translate into

individual subsidies of between

70,000 and 150,000

baht per vehicle sold by

companies taking part in the

scheme.

THAI RESTAURANTS

SEE UPTICK

Green shoots have started to be

visible in the restaurant sector with

the number of new restaurant venues

registering as a new business

propelling the sector into third place

overall.

Two hundred and twenty-two

new eateries were registered in

February, an increase of three per

cent on the previous year. Whilst

not a large increase, it is a significant

milestone showing growth in

the industry. The rise comes against

a modest one per cent overall drop

in the same month for registrations

of new businesses in all business

sectors combined.

Even though Coved-19 cases

have climbed, relaxations in restrictions

and widespread vaccinations

have helped to ensure that people

return to their favourite eateries

whether they be in stand-alone locations

or in popular shopping malls.

HOSPITAL GROUP TO

GO DIGITAL

With average ages in Thailand

climbing, the foray into the

wellness business is seen as an

important step for some hospitals.

Phyathai Hospital Group and

Paolo Hospital Group have carved

out a way to ensure that wellness

services are more streamlined using

online digital services.

Att Thongtang, chief executive

of Phyathai Hospital Group

and Paolo Hospital Group under

Bangkok Dusit Medical Services,

was quoted as saying "We developed

an application named Healthup

to serve our patients and

make treatment services more

convenient.”

The idea is to allow patients to

contact the hospital without necessarily

making an appointment

and to help to have meetings

between hospital personnel and

doctors using secure servers to

provide video consultations.

As well, the app will be able to

serve up reports, scans, and other

information about a patient’s

ailments all in a secure fashion.

Mr Att was also quoted as

saying, "We plan to seek a new

target group among company

employees, especially health lovers

who may be interested in our

healthcare programmes.”

Phyathai Hospital Group and

Paolo Hospital Group have 11

hospitals combined and treat

nearly 4 million people a year.

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE

THE U.S. DOLLAR

The U.S. Dollar has risen quite sharply,

with the DXY Dollar index (a measure

of the Dollar’s value against a basket of

major currencies), moving from 95.74

to 98.22. This move happened at a time

when the Federal Reserve Chairman reiterated

his hawkish stance regarding the

fight against inflation, resulting in a 0.25

per cent rate hike in March and setting

expectations for at least 7 rate hikes this

year with some of them possibly being

half point jumps instead of quarter point

ones. Yet in spite of the comments it is

notable that even after the March adjustment,

U.S. interest rates are still only

at 0.25 per cent and no policy moves

were made in the previous months, even

though the Federal Reserve was in receipt

of data that pointed to a worrying

rise in inflation. Yields on the U.S. 10-

year note did react though, hitting 2.56

per cent up from 1.92 percent, before

dropping back slightly to 2.38 per cent.

Against the Thai Baht, the USDTHB exchange

rate rose from 32.99 to 33.24.

THE BRITISH POUND

Whilst the US Federal Reserve has

been slow to raise rates, the Bank of England

has made 3 back-to-back interest

rate hikes since December with more to

come. Yet curiously the Pound has fallen

against the U.S. Dollar from 1.3511 to

1.3129. Much of this is due to the Dollar

move itself which is driven by more clarity

with regard to forward rate guidance in

the U.S. compared to the UK, but weakness

has also been evident on a technical

basis. Against the Thai Baht, the British

Pound also fell from 44.56 to 43.61.

THE JAPANESE YEN

The Japanese Yen moved rapidly from

115.55 against the U.S. Dollar to a high

of 123.12 before retracing to 121.79. With

a stock market rally in progress denting

the Yen’s safe haven status and with a

rising Dollar, more weakness in the Yen

was probably inevitable. Against the Thai

Baht, the Yen slid from 0.2883 to 0.2704,

a move of more than 4 per cent, which

illustrates the weakness in the Japanese

unit.

is brought to you by

THE EURO

The Euro has also dropped against the

U.S. Dollar, as it is the largest currency

in the basket that makes up the DXY index.

It moved from 112.10 to 111.05 to the

U.S. Dollar, briefly hitting a low of 108.72

before rebounding somewhat. The ECB

remains dovish and may be seen to be

the ultimate laggard regarding its inflation

fight as it still firmly refuses to budge on

interest rates even when Eurozone inflation

is at a multi-decade high. Against the

Thai Baht, the Euro dropped slightly from

37.23 to 36.88.

HUTCHISON PORTS THAILAND INTEGRATES REMOTE CONTROL HANDLING

EQUIPMENT AND AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS TO ITS LAEM CHABANG PORT OPERATIONS

Hutchison Ports Thailand

("HPT"), a leading port operator

in Thailand, is contributing

to Hutchison Ports Group mission

to achieve an 11% reduction

in CO2 emissions by 2030

by adding more electrically

operated autonomous trucks,

remote control super post panamax

ship to shore cranes, and

remote-control rubber tyred

yard cranes at Hutchison Ports

Thailand's Terminal D.

While launching local environmental

initiatives to ensure

sustainable development, HPT

continues to provide flexibility,

connectivity, and the latest

available technology through

its ability to handle vessels of

various sizes - all critical for

the success of the eastern economic

corridor (EEC), and enhanced

terminal operations to

build Thailand into the logistics

and transportation hub of the

ASEAN region.

In 2021, Thailand's import

value increased by 29.8% with

a total value of USD 267.6 billion,

while exports saw an increase

of 17.1% with a total

value of USD 271.1 billion.

HPT's initiatives are designed

to ensure the sustainable

development of the company

and Thailand by focusing

on three pillars:

• Our Environment: To create

a sustainable future, HPT has

committed to reducing greenhouse

gas emissions and waste

generated in Laem Chabang

Port operations, following

Hutchison Ports Group's aims to

reduce diesel consumption per

TEU by 1% per year until 2023,

with an 11% reduction in CO2

emissions per TEU by 2030 To

accomplish this, HPT is adopting

autonomous electric trucks,

using remote control electric

ship to share cranes, 5G for remote

control equipment,

introducing remote control

electric yard cranes, and

switching to e-gatepass/gate

automation. Going digital and

paperless, which includes an

online assistant and booking

service, is another commitment

that HPT has made, as

is going green through upcycling.

• Our People: Initiatives

formed as part of the people

pillar include the roll-out of a

mental health and well-being

awareness programme to support

team members through

difficult times. Improving the

quality of life in the local community

is a priority for the company

and as a result, HPT has

been engaging with the surrounding

community, initiating

a variety of local projects with

schools, a university and a

hospital.

• Our Business: To strengthen

its governance HPT will increase

supplier evaluation to

pre-screen and assess potential

contractors against a set

of sustainability criteria. This

is to ensure greater transparency

across all areas of the

business to ensure suppliers

and customers meet the standards

of HPT's sustainability

strategy.

"Sustainable development

and business expansion must

go hand in hand. It is important

that our various environmental

initiatives add value to

our business while also lowering

our carbon footprint. Sustainable

development necessitates

a strong commitment

from our team as it requires

many changes in the way we

work, and I am pleased with

the progress we have made

thus far. Our Group has set

short and medium term environmental

goals for all of our

ports and I am confident that

we can achieve these goals

while working towards a longer

term "net zero" target." said

Stephen Ashworth, Managing

Director of Thailand and South

East Asia, Hutchison Ports

HPT's Terminal D is now

entering the remaining phases

of construction which on completion

will have a handling

capacity of 3.5 million TEU.

Terminal D will eventually

be equipped with 17 super

post panamax ship to shore

cranes and 43 rubber tyred

yard cranes, all remote control

and electrically operated. The

Terminal is the world's first

dual-traffic container terminal

simultaneously operating with

autonomous and conventional

trucks.

Laem Chabang Port is

Thailand's principal port and is

the main gateway for the country's

imports and exports. In

2021, Laem Chabang handled

a total of 8.5 million TEU. This

was an increase of 0.9 million

TEU handled from 2020.

HPT's market share at Laem

Chabang Port was approximately

40%. Over1,000 container

vessel calls were made

at HPT's various terminals in

2021, including some of the

largest ocean-going container

vessels currently in operation.

MANGO ART FESTIVAL 2022 ALL ABOUT

ART FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

Returning to reinvigorate the Thai art

scene, the Mango Art Festival will gather

a variety of art disciplines to bring happiness

to all art lovers and elevate the

country’s creativity.

To be held from 3 to 8 May 2022 at

River City Bangkok, the Mango Art Festival

2022 will be a space for freedom and

self-expression that unlocks humans’

limitless potential. With the theme of “A

Vision for A Better Tomorrow”, the festival

aims to use art to lead us all through

these challenging times of a global pandemic

and climate change to arrive at a

brighter future. Visitors will also experience

new aesthetics that have resulted

from technological advancement within

the festival.

At the festival’s press conference on

16 March 2022, Sermkhun Kunawong,

President of Mango Art Festival, remarked

that the Mango Art Festival 2022

would be one of the most interesting

events this year, recognizing that “the

new generation is interested not only in

the money matter but also in aesthetic.

So, this event matches the new lifestyle.”

“The theme of this year’s festival is ‘A

Vision for A Better Tomorrow.’ This future

has to do with what we give value to, like

equality and freedom, the right to live the

way we want. In this sense, art can be a

driving force that brings something better

to society, for today and tomorrow.”

The festival will consist of four main

zones at River City Bangkok, a shopping

center that is well known for art and its

success in having hosted several internationally

acclaimed exhibitions. These

zones are 1) Galleries, 2) Independent

Artists, 3) Product Designs, and 4) Craft

Accessories and Food & Beverage.

Beyond these exhibition zones, other

interesting activities include talks, performances,

special exhibitions, and music.

The festival will feature 66 booths with

more than a thousand artworks by Thai

and international artists, including those

from private collections, works by old

masters and contemporary artists as well

as NFTs.

According to Sermkhun, the talks will

revolve around today’s topics such as

“art trends and the soaring prices in the

art market. Another unique topic we’ll get

to discuss is business matching, how to

match artists with galleries. So, we’ll see

international galleries coming here to take

Thai artists to the international art market

and international artists being represented

by Thai galleries.”

Sermkhun added that “in times of

war like this, we may look regionally, not

globally. We’ll see more connections within

a region, with foreign collectors in the

region buying Thai art and Thai collectors

buying works within the region. The

Mango Art Festival is proud to be part of

this movement that uplifts the creative

economy.

As an art lover, Suchai Pornsirikul,

Co-founder of the Mango Art Festival,

said he expected to see the Thai art community

come together for this festival. “I

want Thai artists to see real artworks.

Chavalit Soemprungsuk (a National Artist

of Thailand for visual arts), whose trust

I oversee, once told me that if we get to

see a lot of great and original art, we can

create unique artwork of our own.” At the

Mango Art Festival, there will be a lot of

art pieces to see.

“The Mango Art Festival is the most

comprehensive festival in Thailand,” Phathaiwat

Changtrakul, the festival’s Artistic

Director, said confidently. “This event will

take the Thai art scene to another level,

opening a new platform for people

to connect with each other. The Thai art

scene has been very active in the past

few years. We have seen many shopping

malls and leading brands working with

artists. This trend will be even clearer this

year if we continue to support artists and

encourage people to go see art.” Without

a doubt, this festival will rival all the major

art events in Southeast Asia.

Suphita Charoenwattanamongkhol,

Fair Manager, stressed the festival’s goal

of supporting Thai artists, saying, “Countries

with high-quality society have art

festivals. If we work together, anything is

possible. Today, artists have found more

success and can sell their works at higher

prices, and collectors buy art with pride.

This festival is challenging on many levels.

It’s a gathering of people who are

passionate about art and design and

everything in between, but I believe that

through collaboration, “a vision for a better

tomorrow” is attainable.”

Following its success last year, the

second edition of the Mango Art Festival

has been both exciting and challenging

for the organizer. On selecting design

products to be included in the festival,

Lalida Leelayoova, Design Director, said,

“My intention is that every piece from every

brand must fit the festival’s concept. I

want the viewers to see the advancement

in terms of technique and craftmanship

from the designs that I selected”

As for the press conference, Ek

Thongprasert and Wishulada Panthanuvong

put on a performance in the form of

a fashion show with the concept of “From

Trash to Art Pieces”. The pair turned used

bras from the Wacoal Bra Day Project

into a special collection featuring 5 looks,

inspired by the industry to reduce waste

from its production and moving toward an

environment that is more sustainable.

Don’t miss the Mango Art Festival

2022 at River City Bangkok, located at

the heart of Charoenkrung Road, which is

a cultural landmark of Bangkok. This will

be the most well-rounded and exciting art

festival in all of Thailand, aiming to inspire

as well as stimulate the Thai economy by

turning the country into a travel destination

for art and design lovers from around

the world.

HOW TO MAKE

MORE SALES USING

THE SCIENCE OF

NEUROMARKETING

First of all, neuromarketing

isn’t as complicated as it sounds.

It simply takes long known psychological

facts and implements

them into marketing.

Let’s start with the area of web

copy, instead of talking about your

product and what it can do - write

about your customer and what

they get from it.

Example 1

Our product has a range of

benefits to increase sales and

maximise profit.

Example 2

You will sell more of your products

and make more profit from

your website with this product.

Which sentence entices you

more to buy? Most people say

sentence 2.

Neuromarketing appeals to the

unconscious mind or the old brain,

the part that is associated with

survival, food and sex - the most

primitive part of our brain.

This part of the brain is wired

to be selfish, to take care only of

ourselves. That’s why we need to

use the words you and yours a lot

to attract and keep the interest of

users.

We can also take advantage of

the power of reciprocity, when you

do something for someone they

feel obliged to give something

back so handing out a freebie is

always a great way to start. Do

you remember when charity donation

forms came through the door?

They often came with a free pen!

The unconscious mind is also

trained to notice change, so any

moving items on a website are

likely to attract it. Rotating banners

and banners are a good way to

show change on your website, just

stay away from full width sliders as

they slow your website down and

reduce conversion rates.

Users are most likely to buy

from someone who is similar to

them and who they find attractive,

so try to add photos of yourself

and/or your team onto the website

and make them more casual than

business like.

Add plenty of testimonials and

social proof to your website and include

as much information as you

can about your reviewers: name,

company, location and a photo if

possible.

This gives your users a sense

of security that other people similar

to them have bought and liked

your product.

Neuromarketing and design

are the future of online sales, if

UNDERSTANDING THE STOCK MARKETS

In the last article in the series we

looked at the role of technical analysis

and how various indicators can

be harnessed to aid trading.

Moving averages are one of the

oldest indicators used - they are

also simple to understand and create.

Moving averages tend to be reliable

too.

Moving averages are not that

exciting however. They are not a

wonder indicator. They simply show

a smoothed out share price over

the course of time in an attempt to

show a trend. With share prices so

volatile, and with all the confusing

signals given by spiky price movements,

moving averages could be

said to be an invaluable

tool.

Calculation

A simple 25-day moving average,

for example, works by gathering the

closing share prices for the last 25

days, adding them together and dividing

the result by 25. You will then

have a single number that will be the

average closing price for the last 25

days. The following day you will do

the same calculation, lopping off the

oldest '26th' day and recalculating

the average to include the new day.

Of course 24 of the old days will remain

in the calculation as they did

previously, the only difference will

be the new day that you added, and

the oldest day removed. This new

figure will become the next days

result.

After several days you will

be able to create a line that

represents the different averages

and this will represent a

smoothed out version of the

market - a 25-day moving average.

The line will be smooth because

of the fact that only one

day in 25 has changed. Even if

the change in the stock price on

a given day was very large, it

would not show a massive difference

in the moving average

as it will be blended into the calculation

with the other 24 days'

data.

The moving average cannot

be calculated until you have the

25 days (in this case) of historic

data. In this way, the moving

average is known as a lagging

indicator, giving its data late.

The value of moving averages

Apart from showing the trend

line of a security or index in a very

smoothed out and simple to read

fashion, moving averages also act

as market indicators.

In the example of a 25-day moving

average, it can be seen that at any

given point in time you have calculated

the average price that the market

was willing to pay for a security

over the last 25 days. It’s a way of

identifying a consensus, which is

free from daily volatility.

By comparing the moving average

with the current stock price, it is very

easy to see if the current stock price

is above or below its moving average.

If the stock price dips below

its moving average, then it may be

seen as bearish and may signal that

it is time to sell. This is because it

shows that confidence is slipping in

the stock over this period.

If on the other hand the stock

price moves above and beyond the

moving average then this shows that

the price the stock is selling for now

has beaten the 25 days' average

consensus, and could indicate a buy

signal.

25 days has just been chosen as

an example. More common moving

average cycles are 20, 50, 100 and

200 days with others used from time

to time. For shorter-term trades,

you could elect to use different time

frames e.g. updating hourly instead

of daily.

The best use of the moving average

indicator is to buy or sell on the

right side of the market having identified

the trend, even if it is a little

late.

GRAB THAILAND ANNOUNCES 5-YEAR GOAL FOR EVS

Grab Thailand announces

its ambitious goal in supporting

the government in promoting

the adoption of EVs

among its driver- and delivery-partners

by targeting 10%

of vehicles providing ride-hailing

and on-demand delivery

services on the platform are

electric vehicles (EVs) by

2026. The company is currently

in the plan to discuss

with manufacturers, distributors,

and charging stations to

drive the use of EVs among

driver-partners, as well as,

partnering with financial institutions

to support their financial

planning and loan

services. Under this initiative,

Grab Thailand will cooperate

with the public sector to raise

public awareness and promote

a better understanding

of EVs and its benefits among

driver-partners as to support

the government's joining forces

with the ASEAN countries

in driving green energy and

reducing the greenhouse gas

emissions in the region.

Worachat Luxkanalode,

Executive Director of Grab

Thailand, said, "Climate

change can have extensive

intergenerational impact on

the well-being and livelihoods

of communities everywhere.

To minimize environmental

footprint, there is a need to

reduce dependence and usage

of fossil fuel and encourage

usage of renewable energy

and low carbon technology

and innovation. With the cutting-edge

advances in technology,

electric vehicles (EV)

have now become the new

and popular choice for many

people across the nation. To

drive the country towards

the EV society is one of the

key strategies and indeed, a

national agenda for the government

to help address the

issues of fuel price hikes and

global warming sustainably."

"As a platform provider,

Grab Thailand has always

placed our concern on the

importance of environmental

issues. We have been initiating

various projects and

activities to support the use

of clean energy, while minimizing

the environmental impact

from the services such

as launching the pilot projects

to encourage the use of

electric motorcycles in providing

food delivery services

among our driver-partners

and the feature launched

that encourages users to

participate in the carbon offset

program allowing them

to donate for reforestation

programme. To reinforce our

commitment in promoting environmental

sustainability this

year, Grab Thailand is eager

to announce our 5-year goal

[2022-2026] to further support

the adoption of electric

vehicles. We aim to increase

the number of driver-partners

driving electric vehicles (EV),

targeting 10% of the total

driver-partners within 5 years.

This initiative is aimed at supporting

the government policy

in driving the clean energy

and reducing the greenhouse

gas emissions in the region."

To achieve our goal, Grab

Thailand will focus on three

key activities as follow:

• Exploring opportunities to

collaborate with electric vehicle

manufacturers and distributors

in providing electric cars

and motorcycles that match

the needs of driver- and delivery-partners,

as well as,

promoting for the vehicle pilot

program and joint education

campaigns. The partnership

will also extend to related

service providers such as the

electric vehicle charging stations

and its charging system

management to encourage

the use of electric vehicles

more efficiently.

• Partnership with financial

institutions to help provide

financial planning or loan

services with special interest

rates and daily repayments.

This is to encourage more

interest and help reduce the

debt burden for freelance

workers or those who may not

have access to the financial

system.

• Cooperation with the public

sector to promote a better

understanding of electric vehicles

among driver- and delivery-partners,

especially in

terms of economic, social,

and environmental benefits,

as well as, sharing related

trends and technology to

raise their awareness and acceptance

which, in turn, leading

to more trials and words

spread.

"This long-term goal announcement

of Grab Thailand

in promoting the use of electric

vehicles is just the first

steppingstone that reflects

our dedication to helping address

environmental issues

and promotes sustainability

goals, which is also a part of

our GrabForGood mission to

support and uplift the quality

of life for the people in the

society. Grab is ready to be

another driving force in raising

public awareness and encouraging

the use of green

energy in our business ecosystem.

We are in full support

to cooperate with the public

sector to drive and achieve

the national agenda on the

electric vehicle as planned."

Worachat concluded.

JUST THE STATISTICS

While bar charts, line

graphs and simple numbers

are hardly capable of providing

the defining answer

to many economic, social

and political questions,

they are certainly a good

way of obtaining a general

overview of any particular

subject.

Each month the Business

Supplement will look

into a brace of statistical

information and provide

readers with what we consider

to be the central elements

of these figures.

THAILAND’S

INFLATION

RATE RISING

The inflation rate in Thailand

surged to 5.28 per cent in February

2022 up from 3.23 per

cent the month prior and firmly

beating market expectations of

4.05 per cent.

Only a year ago we highlighted

how low inflation was

and how in March 2021 Thailand

recorded -0.08 per cent

inflation, i.e. deflation.

What a difference a year

has made. Save for a dip last

August, inflation has been on

an upward surge since then

with readings of 1.68 per cent

in September, 2.36 per cent in

October and 2.71 per cent in

November. December saw a

slight moderation but the most

recent data could be considered

to be a move into a new

higher range for Thailand.

Of course it may not have

escaped your attention that

inflation is now on a worryingly

strong uptrend across the

world with the U.S. posting 7.9

per cent year on year inflation

numbers, a 40 year high, and

the UK posting 6.2 per cent

inflation, again a multi decade

high.

Thailand’s inflation rate is

mainly affected by prices of

food, 36 per cent weighted,

transportation, 34 per

cent weighted, and housing

costs, 24 per cent weighted.

CONSUMER

CONFIDENCE

INDEX SLIPS

Thailand’s Consumer Confidence

Index (CCI) declined

to 43.3 in Feb 2022, which

marked a five-month low.

In the previous month it

reached 44.8 and in December

2021 hit a multi-month high of

46.2.

October and November

2021 saw readings of 43.9 and

44.9 respectively. In August

2021 the index hit an all time

low of 39.6, and so it

could be seen that there has

been somewhat of a recovery

since then.

As a comparison, one year

ago, in March 2021, the index

posted a reading of 48.5.

Rising energy costs were

arguably one of the factors behind

the recent dip as well as

fears about persistently rising

Covid-19 cases.

The Consumer Confidence

Index is released by The University

of the Thai Chamber of

Commerce and is created by

analysing the results of a survey

sent out to 2,440 households.

A reading above 100 indicates

improving sentiment, below

100 marks a declining outlook.

JLL announced that its corporate

office in Bangkok has achieved

precertification toward the WELL

Building Standard. The achievement

highlights the firm's commitment

to designing and managing

healthy workplaces for its employees.

The firm is poised to be the

first property services provider and

one of the first companies in Thailand

Managed and administered by

the International WELL Building Institute

(IWBI), The WELL Building

health and wellbeing, through air,

water, nourishment, light, fitness,

comfort, and mind.

"When we designed and created

our new corporate office in

Bangkok, our people's wellbeing

was at the top of our agenda," says

Michael Glancy, Country Head of

JLL in Thailand.

"The WELL precertification

marks our commitment to improving

our work environment and

amenities for all our employees,"

he adds.

A human-centric workplace

With 1,450 square meters of useable

space, JLL's office showcases

a new activity-based way of working,

which includes collaboration

spaces, meeting rooms, concentration

rooms, and sound-proof phone

booths.

To help employees relieve

stress, boost wellbeing, and bring

happiness, JLL's office also offers

JLL relocated its corporate office

Growing influence of digitalisation

and the pandemic has led

companies to introduce hybrid

policies giving employees the

flexibility to choose their own

work settings. At the same time,

the existence of offices has been

questioned.

Mr. Glancy says "There is

so much change happening for

businesses globally and the

workplace is playing a key role

as it reflects a company's value

and purpose, which helps attract

and retain top talent. Offices are

here to stay and will continue to

play a key role as a place where

corporate culture, collaboration

and teamwork can flourish. Employers

must provide the spaces

that staff want and need to use

on a daily basis, which will also

help create a greater sense of

In addition to the WELL Building

its office to achieve the LEED

Going beyond getting its own

“THE PIRATES OF CHEMO”

Bangkok Community Theatre

presents The Pirates of Chemo

by Paul Schutte, May 7,

8 & 9 and 14 & 15, 2022 at

the Queen Sirikit Centre for

Breast Cancer (QSCBC) on

Henri Dunant Road.

Directed by theatre veteran

Rick Pokrajen-Harmon,

this dramatic comedy gives

us an intimate look at six

women who share a diagnosis

of breast cancer, all of

whom are in various stages

of treatment, recovery, and

remission. They bond and

band together in touching

and often hilarious support of

one another, pledging to live

life to the fullest! The Pirates

of Chemo reminds us of how

the relentless spirit of the human

condition responds to

love and considers the idea

that healing is different than

cure. The Richmond Gay

Times review said, “…we

laugh, we cry, we empathize

with those we know who have

battled cancer. This cast of

six isn’t just actors—pirates,

to be correct—but representatives

of diverse people who

convince us that the curative

powers of laughter and fortitude

shouldn’t be discounted.”

• POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS

DON’T JUST LOOK –

THEY ENGAGE!

Studies have proven that LED signage makes an impression

on people. Just like this part of the world, a

study revealed that 70% of Americans who recall seeing

a digital video display in the past month, 47 percent

specifically recall seeing an ad. That’s nearly half!

And of those travelers who remember spotting a digital

billboard, 82 percent recall that it was displaying

an ad.

• LED BILLBOARD V

STATIC BILLBOARD

To establish the difference between LED Billboards and

Static Billboards one study used anonymous video analytics

to log the number of people who noticed both

static and digital signs at a number of locations. The

number of “impressions” (that is, people paying attention)

logged by the static sign peaked on its first day

in place. After that, they dropped off and remained low

for the remaining weeks of the study. But the digital

signs received consistently high numbers of impressions

throughout the study—receiving almost as many

every day as the static sign received the first day.
