100 caps for St Thomas footballer

ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College footballer Tom Stewart
accomplished the rare feat of
bringing up 100 games for the
first XI last week.
The occasion was made
even sweeter for the holding
midfielder who scored a
hat-trick in his side’s 8-0
victory over rivals St Bede’s
College in the Connetics premier
first XI secondary school
competition.
Following the game he was
presented a plaque and trophy to
mark the occasion by principal
Steve Hart.
“It was a pretty special
occasion . . . It was an extra
incentive to have a good game, so
I was happy to end up scoring a
hat-trick,” said Stewart.
The St Thomas’ captain
became just the third player to
bring up 100 caps for the first XI,
following in the footsteps
of Mike Killick and Andy
Steel.
Killick was on hand to witness
Stewart’s milestone, due to being
the referee for the match.
Stewart will become the most
capped player in the school’s
history if he can pass the 115
game tally currently held by
Steel – who is currently the
chairman of the school’s board
of trustees.
“He’s a very mature and aware
player, he does a lot of stuff to
work on his game in his own
time and builds up confidence
in the guys around him,” said St
Thomas’ coach Jacob Allen.
The biggest highlight during
Stewart’s 100-game career
came last year when St Thomas
defeated Burnside 2-1 in the
Connetics first XI final.
“It was amazing, we had the
whole school chanting our name
and when the final whistle went
they all ran onto the pitch, it was
a sea of blue,” Stewart said.
MILESTONE:
Tom Stewart has
become just the
third player in St
Thomas history to
play 100 games
for the first XI.
He was also part of the St
Thomas futsal team which
won the New Zealand
secondary schools futsal
championships in Wellington in
March.
In year 8, he scored the
SPORT
winning goal for his St Thomas
team at the Koru Games against
Rolleston School.
The same year he made his
first XI debut at just 12 against St
Kevin’s College from Oamaru –
a match he also scored in.
Last year he was part of the
New Zealand Secondary Schools
team which toured the United
States.
He hopes he may become
more familiar with the US in the
coming years with the goal of
earning a football scholarship to
play at a college next year.
Before then he hopes to
replicate a run like St Thomas
achieved at the 2017 national
secondary school tournament
where they finished fourth.
With potentially 20 to 25
games expected to be played this
year he stands a good chance
of becoming St Thomas’ most
capped player, if he can stay
fit.
St Thomas have won the
opening two rounds of
this year’s Connetics premier
first XI secondary school
competition.
Tomorrow they face
Christchurch Boys’ High School
at English Park at 5.10pm
