Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem” is a masterpiece and
constitutes one of the most important works in the history of the
oratorio genre.
For the first time in the history of the work, the full score as well as
the vocal score with a piano reduction by the composer are presented
in scholarly-critical Urtext editions in their own right. They have been
prepared simultaneously by individual editors working in close
collaboration with each other: Peter Schmitz has edited the full score
and Michael Werthmann the vocal score. Both editions are based on
the first print authorized by the composer and are at the cutting edge
of musical scholarship.

these editions. It offers an in-depth analysis of the consulted sources,
reconstructs the genesis of the work and documents important
editorial decisions. New definitive findings regarding the number

the detailed description of the autograph score.
