What
Next?
When Steve Jobs was CEO of Apple, there was a question,
permanently written on the wipe-board of the Apple Inc.
senior management room; “What Next?”
Maybe it partly explains the innovation and creativity which
sustains such world class businesses. This mind set to face the
next challenge and not rest on past triumphs or regret past
failures, is what helps each of us embrace the present and
move on.
I think it’s a good principle to carry with us through life as
Christians. The Apostle Paul expresses the same conviction
when he tells the Church at Philippi the message on his wipe
board message “I press on…”. He saw faith in Christ as a series
of opportunities to keep moving forward to the goal of the
heavenly Kingdom of God.
So what’s next for you? What step of faith is God calling you
to this week or month? What issue, situation, responsibility,
might you need the courage to face and say “Lord, what next?”
As May turns to June, Spring to Summer, each of us will have
that question to answer.
Maybe for some of us it will be “more of the same”. Sometimes
we are not called to a significantly different direction. If we are
keeping in step with the Spirit, the old step can be just as much
a new one. But for others, this month may well require courage
to ask, “Lord, what road are you calling me to walk now that I have
not followed before?”
And as a Church Community, we also need to ask the “what
next?” question. What’s the next mountain of opportunity to
climb, the new door of opportunity to move through. If we don’t
wrestle with that, we risk stagnation or vain repetition as Jesus
called a prayer life that simply rehearsed the same old formulas.
Insanity they say is doing the same thing over and over again
and expecting different results. It’s not just politicians who
can get caught in that loop, Churches can too.
So what next?
Here’s to pressing on in the faith of Christ.
Peter Baker | Senior Minister

Our
Online
Community
We often sit in our Sunday services and
enjoy the worship and teaching, thinking
the experience is limited to the four walls
of Woodbury Avenue, but it isn’t!
Lansdowne has a history of using
technology to spread the Good News,
whether it be the quarterly mailing of
30,000 ‘Word of Life’ study notes in the
late 1940s, the Lansdowne magazine in
the 1950s with a circulation of over 4,000
a month, to pre-recorded telephone bible
based messages in the 1960s, and in the
1970s over 1,000 audio tapes were sent out
each month.
In more recent times, we have moved on
from the cassette tapes to the internet.
Since the 1990s we have been making
video recordings of our Sunday services.
In 2008 we created our own channel on
You Tube, where to date we have put
up more than 1,500 videos, with over 4
million minutes of video viewed. From
the four walls of Lansdowne Road and
now Woodbury Avenue we have a truly
global reach. You Tube will only show us
the top 57 countries that have accessed
our services, but they are as diverse as
Trinidad and Tobago, India and Zambia.
Since the 2000s we have not only recorded
the services, but ‘live streamed’ them,
meaning that people can watch our
services as they happen. We have people
that regularly join us from all over the
world, some who say hello each week on
the You Tube comment board, others that
prefer to remain anonymous. This is our
very own online community, whether they
be housebound members or the churched
and unchurched looking in through this
transparent window into our church.
We have a desire to build relationships
with these real people who, for whatever
reason choose to join us on the internet.
We are looking into new technologies
in which we can communicate more
effectively with our online community.
If you feel that you would like to be
involved in this (or any other aspect of
our Media Ministry), please do speak to
myself or contact the Church Office.
Temporary Tents
Since leaving the old building in Lansdowne
Road to be redeveloped in June 2015, we
have delighted in the providential gift of
Woodbury Avenue. We have also sought to
keep a presence in the Lansdowne area with
temporary tents, having used eleven over
the period, and three currently: East Cliff
Church, St Augustin’s and Naked Coffee.
Our ‘temporary tents’ have a small group
of people working behind the scenes to
investigate potential premises, negotiating
terms and conditions, ensuring the safety
of those who use them and dealing with
ongoing matters such as rental payments
and managing the use of these premises.
Then there is a small team of people
that make things happen on the day. For
example, a team arrives at Lansdowne
Church Central at about 4:30pm having
previously collected things from Woodbury
to set up and rehearse and then operate
equipment such as sound, data projection
and video streaming and prepare the
refreshments. There is the car park to be
manned. This is over and above the normal
requirements such as stewarding and music.
After the service finishes, everything has
to be taken down and equipment returned
to Woodbury, making it a long afternoon/
evening for all involved.
Then there is our tent under construction in
Lansdowne Road. The site itself still has to
be maintained, even in this interim period.
Regular inspections have to take place to
ensure the site is safe and secure.
Because of the increasing space pressures
at Woodbury, we are looking to provide
a temporary building and are currently
in the process of trying to get Planning
Permission.
Please pray
• that the site in Lansdowne Road will
remain safe and secure and the safety
of those looking after it
• Good relationships and opportunities for
witness to those whose premises we hire
Escargots et Grenouilles – NON!
Few of us can doubt the excellent work being done by
Antoine Thenin as he serves amongst International
Students with Friends International.
The potential of this ministry is huge as students from all
over our chaotic world come to study in Bournemouth where
we have the largest concentration of language schools outside
of London. As things stand at this time, Antoine only has funding
for three days per week, even though he works way beyond this!
Our desire is to see Antoine’s funding increased to enable him to work
fulltime. To this end we are planning to hold a three course french meal
at Woodbury Avenue on the evening of Saturday 15 June, 6.15 for a
prompt start at 6.30 pm during which Antoine will be presenting his
work.
The invitation to this meal is open to anyone who feels that they might
be able to consider providing regular financial support [at whatever
level they can afford] for Antoine. You will need a ticket for this event
[£10.50 pp, £5 child] and places are limited. What better way to spend
a summer Saturday evening … a French meal with church family and
listening to Antoine’s gallic tones as he shares his heart for reaching
International Students with the amazing news of God’s love for those
from all over His world?
