Bowls awards finalists named<br />
NOR’WEST CLUBS are well<br />
represented amongst the finalists<br />
for Saturday’s annual Bowls<br />
Canterbury prize-giving.<br />
Burnside have the most finalists<br />
of any club with six, while<br />
Fendalton, Canterbury 2017 and<br />
Morrison Avenue are also up for<br />
multiple awards.<br />
Burnside’s Tayla Bruce and<br />
Richard Hocking are both finalists<br />
for the young player of the<br />
year award. Bruce was part of the<br />
New Zealand women’s triple and<br />
fours teams that made it to the<br />
quarter-finals at the Commonwealth<br />
Games last year.<br />
Meanwhile, Hocking was part<br />
of the Canterbury men’s intercentre<br />
team who won the national<br />
title in March.<br />
Burnside also have finalists in<br />
the form of Brenda Turner for<br />
administrator of the year, Robert<br />
Clark for Arjan van Hasselt for<br />
volunteer of the year, Robert<br />
Clark for official of the year and<br />
Pam Clark for coach of the year.<br />
The winners will be announced<br />
at Saturday’s awards evening at<br />
the Hornby Working Men’s Club.<br />

BURNSIDE HIGH School<br />
runner Cameron Clark stormed<br />
to victory at the Canterbury<br />
secondary schools road race<br />
championships at the A&P<br />
Showgrounds.<br />
Clark completed the 4km race<br />
to win the senior boys title in a<br />
time of 12mins 50secs, almost<br />
19secs ahead of St Andrew’s<br />
College student Ayrton Shadbolt<br />
in second. The top three was<br />
competed by St Bede’s College<br />
student Ethan Smolej.<br />
The under-16 boys title was<br />
won by Cashmere High School<br />
student Charlie Hazlett who<br />
pipped Christ’s College student<br />
Sam Idiens and Burnside’s Theo<br />
Walker.<br />
Meanwhile, the year 9 boys<br />
title went to Kaiapoi High<br />
School’s Pai Wynyard who<br />
beat out Finn Allott from<br />
Christchurch Boys’ High School<br />
and Daniel Prescott from St<br />
Thomas of Canterbury College.<br />
The senior girls race was won<br />
by Cashmere’s Liliana Braun. St<br />
Andrew’s students completed<br />
the podium with Eva Pringle in<br />
second and Neve Loulai in third.<br />
The girls under-16 title went<br />
to Morgan Flanagan, while<br />
