Phil Mauger is taking on the incumbent Glenn Livingstone in the Burwood Ward. It will be a tough campaign for both. Mauger heads Mauger Construction Ltd, a company which spans three generations and came out of the original family business, a service station in North Beach. Livingstone will no doubt try to exploit the fact Mauger no longer lives in the eastern suburbs. But the 61-year-old is adamant this won’t be an Achilles heel. He can push on the council table for improvements to the ward from anywhere, he says. Keeping rates in check by stopping unnecessary council overspending looks like being his key platform. Final designs for the building have been revealed, with construction likely to begin at the site of the old community centre on Colombo St in a few months. The single-storey building will have modern timber and a glass facade with 400 sq m of floor space, Emma Twaddell including a hall with a stage, three meeting rooms, an office and a kitchen. Outdoors, there will be a deck and sufficient off-street parking. The designs have been approved by Papanui-Innes Community Board members and community representatives from groups including the St Albans Residents Association and the local business association. The original St Albans Community Centre was demolished after being severely damaged in the earthquakes. A transitional community centre provided by Lions Clubs International Foundation operated at the Colombo St site from 2012 until last year when it was moved to MacFarlane Park to be managed by the Shirley Community Trust. Since then, the St Albans Community Centre has operated from the St Albans Tennis Club building in Dover St, run by the St Albans’ Residents Association. Chairwoman Emma Twaddell said the association is keen to promote the interests of the diverse St Albans community and several local groups are looking forward to using the new building. “The need to relocate to temporary, smaller premises meant a number of groups had to find other facilities but most have indicated their wish to come back.
