Last week we revealed businessman Phil Mauger will make a bid to topple longstanding Burwood Ward councillor Glenn Livingstone. Today on page 5, we report on another hopeful who has his sights set on council. Kelly Barber is having a crack at the Coastal Ward, held by another long-time councillor David East. Nominations for council and community board positions formally open on July 19, so it is highly likely other contenders will also join the race. Mauger lives in Avonhead, a fair way from the Burwood Ward, and Barber is in Prestons, outside of the Coastal Ward. He left the role due to personal commitments. No decision has been made on his replacement. STOLEN: Security camera footage of the caravan being stolen from a property on Pages Rd in Aranui. The caravan’s owner Bevan Allington has received Facebook messages possibly from the thieves. Caravan ransom attempt after theft • By Matt Slaughter AN ARANUI man had a caravan stolen from his property then received Facebook messages urging him to buy it back. After Bevan Allington posted security camera footage of two men in hi-vis vests going onto his Pages Rd property and taking the 1977 Zephyr caravan, he started receiving messages. Mr Allington had also asked for information about the whereabouts of the caravan. Said the messages from an account called Robin: “I can tell you what you need to know but it comes at a price and it’s not cheap. Has to be now, you have to be alone and I’m not far from you.” “You’ve only got until 10 past 10 to call me and until 20 past 10 to get to me,” said the next message.” He then received messages later that night from a woman who said she had heard the caravan was being offered for $2000, but did not want to report this to police for safety reasons. Mr Allington did not reply to any of the messages from Robin. Robin then tried to call Mr Allington seven times through Facebook messenger. He didn’t answer. Police are investigating the theft and say they are following leads. •Anyone with information should phone the police on 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. GRANTS HANDED OUT The Ōtautahi Rugby Club has received $3000 to go towards a new car park adjacent to Bower Park on New Brighton Rd. It will provide safer parking for families, supporters and visiting teams. A $1696 grant was also given to Scouting New Zealand Burwood to insure its clubrooms on Travis Rd. The grants were from the Coastal-Burwood Community Board discretionary response fund. ROAD REPAIRS Earthquake-damaged Stapletons Rd in Richmond is due to be fixed by late October. The work, between Randall and Dudley Sts, will repair drainage, footpaths, road paving and street lights. SAND DUNE TRACK City council staff have been asked to assess the sand dune track which runs from Waimairi to New Brighton. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board wants the overgrown areas tidied up.
