Owned and run by local resident Julieanne, Rubys Girls Café is named for her mother, who was always by her side through difficult times, and her grandmother, and Julieanne also uses many of their recipes for the café’s food. Julieanne managed the Mobil service station across the road from the café for many years, and got to know the community well. Wanting a change, she looked at starting her own business with the aim of providing something local people could benefit from and enjoy. As luck would have it, premises in the block of shops at 317 Pages Road became available, and they were ideal for her plans to open a cafe. “I loved the outside area, the car parking, and that my family was just around the corner,” she says. Inside, the café is spacious, light and welcoming, with tables and chairs and a lounge area, as well as colourful tables and chairs for the children. All the food, apart from the sandwich bread, is made on the premises. The selection includes freshly made sandwiches, pies, savouries, pizzas, muffins, biscuits, slices, cheesecake and donuts, while drinks include barista coffee, a selection of teas including herbal and chilled soft drinks – and the customers are loving it. To quote Kate and Stacey, there enjoying coffee and a treat, “The food is so good!” In fact, customers have nominated Rubys Girls Cafe for the ‘Best steak and cheese pie’ in the Hits Radio competition. “We are so honoured that people choose to come here, when there are so many eating places around,” Julieanne says. “We want to be a ‘home away from home’ where people can come for a coffee and a chat with their friends. On pension day, we have ‘buy one coffee and get one free’ for Gold Card holders.” Rubys Girls Café also offers outside catering, for family events such as birthday parties, engagement parties and funerals, and the premises can also be hired in the evenings for meetings. In total, 24 students from the schools were honoured at a ceremony last Monday, 11 from Linwood, 10 from Marian and three from Haeata. The students received their awards for the hours of work and activities they had completed within their communities. These hours were committed to things like physical activity, sports coaching, volunteer work including working in community gardens and helping the elderly and mentoring and leadership. The awards are run by the Joshua Foundation, an organisation, which provides programmes for them to fulfil ambitions and dreams through leadership, competence, courage, clarity and integrity and character. Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone spoke at the awards, congratulating the students on their achievements. “Recipients, you have built A $19 MILLION land drainage scheme has reduced the flood risk for dozens of properties in the Woolston and Linwood area. Thousands of native trees and plants have been planted in Te Oranga Waikura Urban Forest, which sits off Ferry Rd and covers 2.75ha. The forest, which is open to the public, acts as a storage basin in heavy rain events, reducing the frequency and severity of flooding in the surrounding area. As part of the flood mitigation work, Bells Creek has also been realigned and naturalised through Linwood College. The realignment of the creek means Linwood College has additional buildable land that it can use to accommodate future growth. The sports field at Edmonds Park can also be used as a stormwater basin. It has been excavated by about 1m to form a stormwater basin, which can be used to store excess water when it rains heavily. A new stormwater pump station has also been built in Richardson Tce. Its recent commissioning marks the completion of the Bells Creek flood mitigation work. The pump station is important because it allows the catchment to drain when water levels in the Heathcote River are high, city council land drainage manager Keith Davison said. “Without the pump station, the existing gravity outfall cannot discharge water from the catchment until the water level in the Heathcote drops lower than the outfall pipe, which means water backs up in the catchment causing flooding.” AWARD-WINNERS: (Back row) – Duke of Edinburgh’s Award New Zealand director Karen Ross, Jenna Martin-Mckenzie, Grace Goggin, Gabriella Ogg and Jasmine Hamilton. Social cooking class for good cause • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A SOCIAL cooking class will be held to support teenagers and young adults fighting cancer. The Asian Garden Cooking School is holding an evening to raise funds for CanTeen on Wednesday. Managing director Murray Macarthy said the evening was a good way to give back to the community and support a worthy cause. Participants taking part will learn how to make an authentic Asian meal. Mr Macarthy said the evening usually ends up being “quite a party.” “We finish it off and they all sit down and we serve it up to them like a restaurant. We serve up beer and wine. It is quite a social get together to meet a lot of people,”he said. He said the evening will cost $99 and already about 12 people were booked in. One hundred per cent of the proceeds from the evening will go to CanTeen. Every day 10 young people across the country are impacted by a cancer diagnosis. CanTeen has been helping 13 to 24-year-olds with cancer for nearly 30 years. But reduced funding has raised concerns the organisation may no longer be able to keep operating without donations. •The evening will be held on Wednesday at the Asian Garden Cooking School, 7 Whitchurch Pl, Harewood.
