20 Wednesday May 29 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi MY PRIDE AND JOY SELWYN TIMES Bikers with a cause Bikers with a cause sums up what the Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club is all about; where members from around Aotearoa New Zealand enjoy riding while supporting causes which help the community. In 2014, 18 keen motorcyclists (the originals) formed the Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club in Waikato. It is now a nationwide social motorcycle club with regional groups managed by an Ambassador and committee. The club holds organised rides around the country to raise funds and spread awareness around issues like youth suicide, domestic violence and mental illness with their aim to make a difference. Members and other motorcyclists participate with their mass presence on the road ensuring their message of hope, anti-violence and support is not missed. Mike Pero and Allan Townsend. Tribal Nations and other rides supported include the: Ride of Respect (in honour of fallen and returned servicemen and an RSA fundraiser – held nationwide during ANZAC week); Green Ribbon R.A.T.S. (a teen suicide awareness campaign and fundraiser for Riders against Teenage Suicide); the White Ribbon Ride (against domestic violence); and other rides for causes such as child cancer. Ambassador to Tribal Nations’ Te Turu (Canterbury) region, Allan Townsend became involved after losing a family member to suicide and experiencing the challenges following such a traumatic life event. Allan and his wife, Kerry organised a West Coast ride which had a strong turn-out of riders. Allan and Kerry have since been responsible for more events (independently and under the Tribal Nations members: Lesa Clarke, Mike King and Garry McLennan at the Timaru Hope Walk. Together with Tribal Nations Te Turu members, Allan and Kerry also participated in organising the R.A.T.S. ride in March, which raised $4,500 for the charity Supporting Families in Mental Illness. Allan said on his second White Ribbon tour, which circuits the South Island in 11 days, he spoke to school groups about domestic violence. “They’re a good bunch on the rides. Some have had personal experience with the cause while others simply want to help raise money for a good cause. I feel blessed to have a wonderful family and happy life, which is why I became involved in fundraising and sharing my own experiences in the hope of making a difference to other people’s lives,” says Allan. Allan is thankful for the support received from individuals and businesses such as the Christchurch Casino, Ornsby Motorcycle Training and WasteCo, as well as all the riders who pay to join a ride. Locally, the Tribal Nations region covers the area from Kaikoura to Timaru and includes the West Coast from Hokitika south.
