CANADA VANCOUVER & THE ROCKIES: Start off your holiday in the wonderful harbour city of Vancouver, with its sophisticated city centre of arts, shopping and entertainment. Still very close to nature and a visit to Grouse Mountain OR Vancouver Island are must do’s. From here a visit into the Rocky Mountains is an absolute highlight. There are many ways you can do this: A self-drive itinerary where we recommend you pre-book your hotels (places like Jasper and Lake Louise have limited accommodation options and the popular hotels sell out early); A guided holiday where everything is included and you sit back in your modern coaches with a fantastic view and listen to your experienced local experts tell you about the region OR a real treat is to include a couple of days on the Rocky Mountaineer Train. This offers a luxurious experience where you will enjoy the Rockies by rail, witness wonderful views and enjoy incredible service and culinary treats along the way. CRUISE THE INSIDE PASSAGE: Another popular add on to any Canada holiday is a cruise up the Inside Passage and into the Fjords of Alaska. Cruises are normally 7-10 nights in duration and can be return OR one-way if you want some time to explore Alaska and the likes of the Denali National Park, which we thoroughly recommend. A chance to get up close and personal with the monumental glaciers, icefields and iconic wildlife are all things you will experience on board a cruise in this region. There are many cruise lines to choose from in this region and it’s important we sit down with you to discuss what best suits your needs. Some of our favorite medium to large ship operators are Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises. If you are looking for something a bit more explorative and personal, then we’d recommend Un-cruise who operate much smaller ships that give you a chance to experience the fjords in more depth. PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday June 4 2019 11 Your Local Views Vision to prevent sea level rise New Brighton resident Cathy Sweet responds to previous stories on the effects climate change could have on the Coastal Ward. She offers a vision for how we can play our part in preventing sea level rise THE CITY council has heard the younger generation’s plea to take urgent action on climate change. Local government is also showing leadership in other countries, for example in the United States, 123 states and 17 governors have created a climate alliance to keep to the emission limits in the 2015 Paris Agreement. So how are we going to show vision and leadership here in Christchurch’s Coastal Ward? Our local residents are well known for having determination, Kiwi ingenuity and a love for our natural environment. With some inspired local leadership those strengths could be used to turn the wider New Brighton area into a real eco head turner for visitors, investors and city planners around the world. Our vast recreation reserves make us the ideal nature cycling mecca for Christchurch, with tracks partly made on the road side of the dunes from Southshore to Bottle Lake, and around the estuary. A river park track is planned and there’s already funding allocated for a track through the wastewater treatment ponds. Getting visitors here on bikes, foot, wheelchairs, scooters and e-scooters would be hugely enhanced with road cycle tracks on Pages Rd and links from Sumner and the Linwood Ave cycleway. Our local businesses need more visitors and our youth and others need the employment that local businesses can offer. There’s a bounty of images on the internet of international examples of towns with beautiful walking and cycle tracks, attractive wind and solar power generation, flood resistant planting and popular trails through nature habitats. We just need a new vision, away from business as usual spending of billions on conventional building design, congested roads and car parks. Money needs to be invested in the latest eco design and technology. Wind turbines or solar for our hot pools folks? Potholes still a concern • By Matt Slaughter SOME POTHOLES have been repaired on earthquakedamaged River Rd in Richmond. But, Richmond resident Cathy Allden says there are still large potholes along the road, which need to be fixed. Pegasus Post reported in March, Ms Allden’s son Jack Allden was one of two Banks Avenue School Cathy Allden pupils who fell off their bikes on the same day when they hit potholes in the road. City council city streets maintenance manager Mark Pinner said repairs had been carried out since this. “Pothole repairs have been done in the River Rd area and the footpath concern has been corrected and is performing to specification.” Mr Pinner said one of the reasons why potholes on the road had been filled in was because the Christchurch Marathon, which took place on Sunday, passed through River Rd. Ms Allden said it was good that this happened, but the pothole, which knocked Jack and the other pupil off their bikes was yet to be fixed. Mr Pinner did not specify if CONCERNS: Some potholes on River Rd have been repaired, but more, including the one that knocked Cathy Allden’s son Jack Allden off his bike in March need to be fixed, Ms Allden says. this area specifically had been addressed. Ms Allden said more work needed to be done on River Rd. “I think, yes there’s a lot that needs to be done in that whole red zone, but if you’re going to exemplar one spot where we can kind of get the infrastructure back together and it can have an impact and actually affect people’s well-being . . . do it there first.” In December 2015, the city council agreed to reduce the level of service to a number of roads in the residential red zone, including River Rd.
