PDP chides Buhari over
“Necessary Evil” remark
By Dirisu Yakubu
A BUJA—PEOPLES
Democratic Party, PDP,
yesterday , berated President
Muhammadu Buhari for
referring to residents of the
Federal Capital Territory, FCT,
Abuja as “necessary evil” while
addressing a delegation of the
city on a Sallah homage at the
State House on Tuesday.
The party said such resort to
branding of Nigerians for rightly
exercising their rights is
completely unpresidential and
must be condemned by all.
In a statement by party’s
spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan,
the PDP described President
Buhari’s comment as inciting,
divisive and “capable of
demonizing innocent compatriots
and setting them up for
victimization by overzealous
Insecurity won’t stop rice
production — RIFAN
By Gabriel Ewepu
ABUJA—RICE
Farmers
Association of Nigeria,
RIFAN, yesterday, assured
Nigerians that current insecurity
challenges in the country would
not stop rice production in the
country.
National President, RIFAN,
Aminu Goronyo, while speaking
with Vanguard on the availability
of locally produced rice in the
market and its affordability, said
“Of course, insecurity is not
everywhere. It is not possible to
have insecurity virtually
everywhere. There are areas that
have insecurity issues but the
major areas where rice is being
produced are free from insecurity.
There is no state in Nigeria where
rice is not being produced. For
example we have our outreach in
Ebonyi State, we have another
one in Cross River, rice is being
produced there. We have another
in Abia. Rice is being produced
there. In Ondo, rice is being
produced there. In Nasarawa, in
Sokoto, in Kebbi rice is being
produced.
“The government is doing
everything possible because the
issue of insecurity is a
government issue and the
government is doing everything
possible to make sure we have
security in the country. We have
about 24 mills in this country that
are integrated and about 210
medium rice mills we have 3,800
small mills in the country that mill
rice to international standard.
“Among these mills there are
those that can produce up to 100
metric tonnes per day, there are
others that produce 50 metric
tonnes, those that produce 20
metric tonnes and while some five
metric tonnes, it depends on their
size and capacity and they are
everywhere in the country.
“The local rice is more in the
market it is about 70-80 per
cent. We are producing
between 7.5 to 8 million metric
tonnes annually right from
2016.”
He also disclosed that "rice
farmers under the Anchor
Borrowers Scheme are fully
insured by the Nigeria
Agricultural Insurance
Corporation, NAIC, so even
they had their farms flooded
they are covered."
Family planning: Experts lament
increased population, lack of resources
By Marie-Therese
Nanlong
JOS—EXPERTS in family
planning and reproductive
health in Plateau State, have
decried the uncontrolled
population growth in the country,
lamenting that Nigeria’s
population is growing faster than
its resources posing a great
danger to the country’s future.
They contended that if the trend
is not checked, it will result in the
total collapse of the country’s
economy as well as more
insecurity.
The Head of Voice for Family
Planning and Reproductive
Health Centre, Dr. Josiah Mutihir,
who addressed journalists in Jos,
blamed insurgency and other
violent crimes in the country on
lack of resources to meet the
growing population saying,
“Ideally, population should only
grow according to resources but
in developing countries, it’s the
reverse and this poses a great
challenge to socioeconomic
agencies.”
The statement continued:
“President Buhari should note
that he was not only rejected by
FCT residents but also by an
overwhelming majority of
Nigerians across the states of the
federation, who voted massively
for the PDP, only for the
Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, to subvert
the will of the people in his favour;
consequent upon which our party
and presidential candidate have
headed for the retrieval of this
stolen mandate at the tribunal.”
The statement also flayed the
President for saying that “to make
FCT secure is to make myself
secure and the Vice President”.
“The party holds that it is the
duty of the President to provide
security for all parts of the country,
irrespective of where he and the
Vice President reside or how
Nigerians cast their votes.
development. Aside from voting
for politicians with our numbers
(large population), I don’t know
what else we get from having
large families that we can’t cater
for. We seek to outnumber one
another for religious and cultural
supremacy but what other than
enmity do we get?”
Corroborating , State
Reproductive Health
Coordinator, Mrs. Hannatu
Dung, lamented the lack of
qualified medical personnel and
facilities to provide family
planning services saying based
on last year’s statistic, the State
had “89 doctors, 221 male nurses,
395 female nurses/midwives, 93
community health officers, 746
senior male and female CHEWs,
346 junior male and female
CHEWs, 142 male/female EHO,
386 male and female EHA, 234
male and female Lab technicians,
six male and female Pharm
Technicians and 83 Health Record
Officers with only 696 PHCs
offering family planning
services.”
Benue govt, Tsav in verbal
exchange over IDPs
By Peter Duru
MAKURDI—BENUE State
government and former
Lagos State Police Commissioner,
Alhaji Abubakar Tsav have been
embroiled in verbal exchange
over the plight of victims of
herdsmen crisis in the state taking
refuge in Internally Displaced
Persons, IDPs, camps in parts of
the state.
While Alhaji Tsav accused the
state government of not doing
enough for the victims, the state
government on the other hand
claimed the former police boss is
politicizing the plight of the IDPs
to curry favour and lobby for
appointment in Abuja.
Tsav in a recent outburst alleged
that “instead of taking steps to get
these unfortunate victims of
herdsmen aggression out of this
unnecessary hardship and
suffering, the Government of
Benue state is politicizing the
whole matter.
“I have been to the IDP camp
in Daudu severally, and I am
saddened with what I saw. The
camp is made up of several
Fulani-like huts which can easily
submerge if there is slight
torrential rain in the area. This
situation is capable of nurturing
and spreading life-threatening
epidemic in the camp. Children
are denied schools and there is
no medical care for the IDPs. The
situation is horrifying.”
But reacting on behalf of the
state government, former Media
Adviser to the State Governor,
Tahav Agerzua said, “our
attention has been drawn to
media reports in which a chieftain
of the All Progressives Congress,
APC, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav,
criticized Governor Samuel
Ortom for what he described as
politicizing the issue of the IDPs
in the state. If Alhaji Tsav had a
genuine concern on state matters
there are better channels of
communication with the Governor
other than in the media and playing
politics with the issue. This is not
surprising as it has become apparent that
his criticism is founded on partisanship
and nothing else. Yet as a member of the
ruling or governing party which controls
the security agencies, it is the
responsibility of his party and the federal
government it controls to provide security
for the lives and property of Nigerians
and to cater for their general welfare.
“That the APC has failed to live up to
its responsibilities the consequence of
which is the sacking of thousands of
people from their ancestral homes who
have resorted to IDP camps is already
an indictment on that party and its
members.
“Tsav should not have been the one
to raise the issue of those displaced. More
so that as a privileged Nigerian he has
not shown his own contributions towards
alleviating the plight of those affected.
The Benue State Government has also
taken Alhaji Tsav to court for falsehood
and the matter is still pending. From the
foregoing the retired police commissioner
cannot be disposed to making fair
comments on Governor Ortom and his
administration.”
criminal activities in our dear state
My advice for you is to shun
injustice and distant yourself from
drug abuse as Government is
doing everything possible to
better your lives.”.
He informed that he had
provided additional operational
vehicles to the CJTF to effectively
cover and monitor activities
around Bakassi Internally
Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps
and ajilari areas which had
witnessed deadly attacks by
insurgents in the last one week,
adding that an office
accommodation would also be
given to them for effective
operations.
