2019 presidential poll: Legal
moves to disqualify Buhari
shift to A-Court
By Ikechukwu
ABUJA—The Abuja
Division of the Court of
Appeal has been asked to
invoke its original
jurisdiction to determine
whether President
about his educational
qualification and certificates,
in the Form CF001 he
submitted to Independent
National Electoral
Commission, INEC, before
the 2019 general elections.
The appellate court is in an
appeal marked CA/A/436/
of the Attorney-General of
the Federation and Minister
of Justice, is competent to file
The appeal was lodged by
HEALTH TIPS
By Sola Ogundipe
Health screenings every
woman must undergo
A woman is naturally at a
greater risk for a number of
diseases than men,
detecting these diseases at
an early stage makes them
easy to cure.
It is, therefore, your
responsibility to ensure
your own safety and wellbeing.
Take cognisance of
recommended health
screenings every woman
must undergo.
One of these essential
tests is the Pap smear test,
which checks the cervix
and the vagina for any
abnormal cells that could
become cancerous.
Ideally, this is a test that
should be conducted as
soon as you’re 21 and
should be repeated every
three years. Once you are
30, you may wait five years
between tests unless you
see any abnormal changes
in your body.
Doctors recommend that
every woman should
undergo a mammogram
screening as soon as she is
aged 40 and over.
Mammograms are a lowdose
X-ray that screens
You should not ignore
Weakened bones after
Ovarian cancer affects
women aged above 50 and
is often fatal hence the
screening should be done
Heart disease kills more
Operators, shareholders seek technical
suspension of Oando shares
•Call for FG’s intervention to resolve crisis
•SEC holds meeting regarding court order
By Peter
Egwuatu
OPERATORS in the
capital market and
shareholders have called on
Securities and Exchange
Commission, SEC, and
Nigerian Stock Exchange,
NSE, to place the shares of
Oando Plc on technical
suspension to protect
minority shareholders of the
company, which share price
has fallen by over 20 per cent
in the past two trading days.
They also stated that the
court injunction obtained by
Oando could lead to long
legal battle, which could
further affect the company’s
shares price on the NSE, if it
was not placed on
suspension.
The operators also called
on the Federal Government
to urgently intervene in the
conflict between the SEC and
Oando Plc.
Meanwhile, the SEC
executives, at press time,
were still holding meeting
regarding the court order
obtained by Oando.
Spokesperson for SEC,
Mrs Efe Ebelo, said : “SEC
is still holding a meeting. I
can’t speak now.”
National Chairman, New
Dimension Shareholders
Association of Nigeria, Mr
Patrick Ajudua, who spoke
the minds of its members in
a chat with Vanguard, said:
“The SEC findings on
Oando speak volume. As
shareholders of the
company, we are more
interested in protection of
minority shareholders, their
investments and protection
of capital market.
‘’The consequences of this
far-reaching
recommendation from the
regulator has tremendous
effect on the share price of
the company, both local and
international, market
integrity, rule of law and
expected returns on
investment.
‘’For purposes of fair
hearing, we expect the
company to come out with
its position on the matter as
this will allow the
shareholders to take a
position with respect to the
issue at hand.
‘But going by the findings
of the investigator, the board
and management of the
company have much
clarification to make, the role
played by the external
auditor, the audit committee,
the external board evaluators
and even the regulators, who
have unfettered access to the
account of the company, who
gave approval to the account
as presented, should also be
indicted.
‘’I believe that SEC, as
currently constituted, has no
power to take such a farreaching
decision without
the consent of a board. The
regulator has been operating
without a board for more
than four years and as such,
is like a car without a pilot, a
human being with body
without the head. Even the
USA SEC has not operated
without a board since 1939."
Reacting as well to the
outcome of a forensic audit
on Oando released by SEC
on May 31, as well as a court
injunction restraining SEC
from sacking Oando’s
Group Chief Executive
Officer, Mr Adewale Tinubu,
and his deputy, capital
market operators applauded
the courage of SEC’s acting
Director-General, Ms Mary
Uduk, in releasing the
outcome of the forensic audit.
Senate leadership: APC yet to zone
position to S-South— Caucus
By Henry Umoru
& Levinus
Nwabughiogu
ABUJA—AHEAD of the
inauguration of the 9th
National Assembly and
election of presiding officers,
concerned caucus of All
Progressives Congress,
APC, yesterday, said the
party was yet to zone the
position of Deputy Senate
President to the South-
South geo-political zone.
This came on a day
Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, caucus in the House
of Representatives said it
had yet to endorse House
Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila,
or any other aspirant for the
position of speaker in the
incoming 9th National
Assembly.
In a statement signed by
Segun Bello and Sunday
Umutu in Abuja, yesterday,
the APC leaders took a
swipe at Senator Ita Enang
on his position that Senator
Ovie Omo-Agege (APC,
Delta Central), had been
endorsed for the position of
Deputy Senate President.
According to the APC
leaders, Senator Ita Enang
cannot speak for the party
and can no longer speak for
the Presidency, considering
the fact that he was no longer
Senoir Special Assistant to
President Muhammadu
Buhari on National
Assembly Matters (Senate).
They said in a statement:
“Section 151 of the 1999
Constitution states that the
appointment of all special
advisers shall cease when
the President ceases to hold
office, while Section 171
states that the appointment
of the Secretary to the
Government of the
Federation and any office or
the personal staff of the
President shall cease when
the President ceases to hold
office.
“Therefore, our attention
has been drawn to the
statement of Senator Ita
Enang in an interview in
7.00am news on Radio
Nigeria on Wednesday, 5th
June, 2019.
“In the interview, Senator
Enang stated that Senator
Lawan Ahmad will emerge
as Senate President of the
9th Senate, while Femi
Gbajiabiamila will emerge as
speaker, House of
Representatives. He went
on to state that Senator Ovie
Omo-Agege will emerge as
Deputy Senate President.
“Although, in the
interview he was referred to
as the Senior Special
Assistant to the President on
National Assembly Matters,
we write to state that he
spoke on personal capacity
and expressed his own
opinion and certainly not in
any way the position of the
Presidency.
“It should be noted that his
appointment as Senior
Special Assistant to the
President on National
Assembly Matters ceased
with the end of the
President’s first term on
May 29, 2019, as provided
in Section 151(3) of the 1999
Constitution (As
Amended).
“Therefore, his statement
about Senator Ovie Omo-
Agege should be seen
wholly as figment of his
imagination, because he
has probably supported
him."
Meanwhile, PDP caucus
in the House of
Representatives has said it
never endorsed Femi
Gbajabiamila or any other
aspirant for position of
speaker.
In a statement by the
Minority Leader, Leo Igor,
the caucus stated that at no
time did it ask member to
vote a particular candidate.
Ogor stated that the Sallah
message in which the
caucus stated that members
of the PDP were free to
attend political meetings
and sessions of the aspirants
did not translate to
endorsement or asking
members to vote for them.
